Mapping is a lot more than just lines drawn on paper. It’s one of our oldest ways of describing the world around us. We all perceive the world in a different way, therefore each map is inherently unique. I find that fascinating and it has inspired my whole concept of myself as an artist. Maps show us where we are and where we’ve been; what’s important to us and what we leave out; what exists and what we want to exist. Everyone carries maps around with them in their minds, and I love drawing them.
Why do I draw maps?
My passions are art, travel, history, and geography, and I’ve pursued them all in different parts of my life. I’ve travelled a lot and seen many amazing things; I studied human geography and history at university in Vancouver; and I’ve dabbled in art my whole life… but I’ve never worked in a field where I could follow these passions. My recent jobs have left me craving creative, exacting, and personally rewarding work, and taught me that I don’t belong in an office. I truly feel that I am meant to create. This is my attempt to follow my passions to a fulfilling career, but I need your help to do it.
The maps I create are distinctive in a few ways. First, they are handmade to a very high quality that makes them great for display as artwork. Each map is drawn with extreme care on Canson® Artist-Series 1557® classic cream drawing paper with black Copic® archival-quality pigment ink, providing great aesthetics and longevity. Second, the details of style and location are fully customized by each client, meaning every map is unique and personal. Place and time are essential to our perception of the world, and they become the soul of a map. Finally, I put my passion for geography, history, and fine art into every map, resulting in a product you can’t find anywhere else.
The first four rewards feature affordable maps exclusive to Kickstarter. If you’re interested and want to support my campaign, this is a great way to get a compact-sized map at a great price only offered for these 30 days. Each map focuses on a historic and classic city centre: New York (West Village), Paris (Arc du Triomphe), and London (Piccadilly Circus). These 3”x3” maps (including 9”x9” border, as seen below) are easily recognizable to travellers and make fantastic gifts. For those who wish to choose the location of the map, Reward #4 offers this ability for just $35 more. [Rewards #1, 2, and 3 are quantity limited; all maps include worldwide shipping.]
The final three rewards get into the heart of map making. These maps are full size (small, medium, or large), completely customizable, and offered at $50 less than regular price. Each order includes a personal consultation to determine location, style, and other unique factors that make a map your own. Past favourites have included hometowns, new neighbourhoods, travel destinations, family heritage, historical recreations, floor plans, islands, and continents… though the possibilities are limitless. Making it your own is half the fun! [All maps include worldwide shipping.]
Add Map Complexity
You will notice that some maps are more complex than others, offering different levels of detail (standard, complex, and very complex) which affect the cost of a private commission. For simplicity sake, I have set the maps offered through Kickstarter at the standard option, which provides a great amount of detail while remaining affordable. If you would prefer to upgrade your map to complex or very complex (as seen below), simply add $100 for each level to your pledge.
Stretch Goal: $3,000 - REACHED!
If the campaign is a whopping success and surpasses it’s funding goal to hit $3,000,each map will be specially embossed with a Kickstarter limited edition design!
Stretch Goal: $5,000 - REACHED!
Packaging and delivery are hugely important to the professionalism of a product. Since my maps are very high quality, I've been working on packaging to complement them, but I need more resources to do it right. If we meet $5,000, I can order stamps, custom tubing, and other items to improve the product image. Lets see if we can make it!
Why I need Kickstarter
Like everyone on Kickstarter, I need funds and publicity to make this dream a reality. I have a developing portfolio and need your commissions to add to my body of work. I am energized, passionate, and ready to make this my career, but I need support if I’m going to make this my full-time job. The money raised on Kickstarter is intended to fund two to three months of drawing, which allows me to focus on your artwork, develop my business, and get maps onto people’s walls where they can be noticed by others.
I’m ready to start drawing the moment funding is complete! Maps will be drawn and shipped in the order they are pledged, so make sure to get yours early to ensure the fastest delivery. It’s always difficult to estimate the number of pledges a Kickstarter will gather, but I aim to have everything drawn and delivered before Christmas (they make wonderful gifts!).
Risks and challenges
The goal of this Kickstarter is to launch the J.Peters Fine Mapping Co. as my full-time career. My company doesn't require expensive machine tooling or resources to get started, which greatly reduces the risk and challenges that face other new companies. What I need most is time, which your support supplies for me. With enough support and successful funding, all of my energies will be focused on drawing and project fulfillment. You can therefore be confident that your pledge will be delivered promptly in the order it was received.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
