About this project
Each and every one of us has thought, at least for a moment about growing old or about death. The film resonates with our subconscious and our instinct of hiding or letting fear control our life. We are a team of filmmakers living in Denmark, who are trying to evoke a different perspective on the topic. Currently we are testing and building prototypes, but we still need your help to turn the project into reality and create the ideal world for the story, so that we can provide you with an epic short film at the end of 2014.
Why talk about death?
It is something most of us avoid thinking about. But why not face the fact that someday you will take your last breath. Do you want to hide from the inevitable and let fear control your actions? Or do you want to seize the time you’ve got and create your own journey? Join us on this project and let’s find out together!
Why are you making this film?
We want to reach the audience on a personal level by offering them a unique experience and provide them with another perspective on death, a subject so deeply embedded in our subconscious . The film has a very strong concept and conveys a powerful message about the fear of aging. The purpose of the film is to ask some of those questions about existence that will never have an easy answer.
Who are you guys?
We are a growing army of creative monsters! A team of very dedicated and passionate filmmakers with all kinds of different backgrounds in filmmaking, design, finance etc. and every day we’re working hard to create this extremely ambitious and unique piece of stop-motion cinema.
How does crowdfunding work?
Kickstarter is part of concept called “Crowdfunding”. Basically it means that anyone can support great projects that they are inspired by. By funding our project through Kickstarter we can ensure 100% creative control as there will be no big studio influence. You can make a donation in the amount you choose, and then we’ll reward you with a gift according to the amount of your donation. Check out the perks on the right side of the page.
Why stop-motion animation?
Ironically this art form is basically bringing life to dead objects, which is one of many reasons why it’s the perfect medium for the story we want to tell. Stop-motion is a technique where you move a physical object in tiny increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the frames are played in sequence. If you come back regularly, you’ll be able to watch exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the process.
How far are you with the production of the film?
Aside from a full script and storyboard, we’ve already been able to conduct a bunch of trials and tests. The teaser below gives a sense of where we want to take the film – remember this is just a test, so the overall quality of the final film will be much higher. Remember to check back in during our campaign as we’re planning on releasing a couple more teasers soon.
What is the visual style of the film?
A filmmaker has the responsibility to create the ideal world for the story to take place. In this case a dark, dystopian future. The director and concept artist have been working closely together to create a visually engaging universe that matches the story. This decaying, almost post-apocalyptic world will function as a metaphor for the psychological state of the main character.
What will you be doing after you’re funded?
We won’t wait until after. We’re already testing and building prototypes. Our team isn’t going to rest until we all walk up the red carpet and place our butts in the theater seat to watch the premiere screening of the film. During the campaign we will feature weekly video updates with crew interviews where you’ll learn how far our efforts will get us in developing new methods of DIY filmmaking.
Have you ever made a film like this before?
Yes! Check out this short film that the director made last year. Prime Time was completed from idea to final version in only six days and with a relatively low budget. Now imagine what this film will look like after two years of dedicated work, collaborating with professional filmmakers and having a real budget!
Why are you asking for so much?
Going through a film studio, a film of this scale and magnitude usually costs way more than what we're asking for. By means of crowdfunding we have the privilege to keep expenses to the absolute minimum that we need to complete the project independently without loosing creative control. We’ve already managed to raise around 15% of the budget by public funding. This money will go to developing and prototyping. But if we’re going to finish the film, we’re going to need your help.
If I decide to pledge, what do I get out of it?
Besides playing an important part in the creation of this amazing film, you also receive a number of awesome perks. The following is a visual chart of the goodies you’ll be able to receive if you help us make our dream come true. Let us assure you - we aim to create a masterpiece, and your contribution, whatever the size will be what makes this possible.
Risks and challenges
Stop-motion is inevitably surrounded by unpredictability, by surprise, and might possibly be the art which inherently comes with the most challenges and degrees of risk. Every aspect of the production has a margin of uncertainty. Even though this is the art of working with inanimate objects, puppets and sets at times seem to have a will and a life of their own.
Therefore a project like this one requires quite a large amount of prototyping, tests and trials, which makes it difficult to predict the exact timeframe or a precise budget right off the bat. However by spending the neccesary time and resources testing, we can ensure that production will go smoothly and every scene in the film will be polished and visually pleasing.
At the end of the day we are independent film makers working on a voluntary basis with the shared goal to create a highly memorable short film. We are prepared for obstacles and setbacks, as we have already overcome many to reach this point. We are positive we can overcome all future challenges, as our motivator is our united passion for this film project and not a paycheck. In any eventuality, we will keep our backers informed of delays or changes we may encounter along the way, as well as keeping them updated on the progress of our work.
