We wanted to make a simple yet elegant leather case for the iPad- and developed HEMING with hand-stitched, full-grain leather and full wrap around design. Thank you for visiting the HEMING project.
Handstitched full grain leather is merged with advanced features to create this functional and elegant case for iPad. With its thin journal profile, HEMING could transform the iPad to a personal and unique accessory.
We wanted this leather case to look good when new.. and look even better as it matures.
We took a 4-step approach in taking HEMING from concept to initial prototypes. The concepts (1) were converted into detailed drawings (2) and several proof of concepts were made. The detailed sketches were then transferred to 3D Solid Model and the dimensioned drawings (3) were created. The proof of concepts and prototypes (4) were made with the final dimensioned drawing. Once everything was checked off, we moved into making the first few samples for testing and reviews.
The dual fold back allows HEMING to be used in several orientations - journal, wide screen and vertical modes. HEMING also folds at the back to form a handle - making it easy to use the iPad like an open book. Keep it flat, fold like a book or use it like a movie screen- HEMING is going to look good in any orientation.
HEMING is slim- thanks to the rigidity and durability of natural leather and the innovative design. Even with this slim profile, HEMING shields the display screen, the edges and the corners.
The 'triple layered' front cover of HEMING has an internal impact absorbing layer help shield the most vulnerable part of the iPad- the display glass screen. And the inner soft suede surface shields the optical coatings on the display.
We did not want anything to come between you and your iPad. Every port, buttons and switch is accessible - even with the front cover closed. The display screen, the home button and even the edges are fully accessible- without corner brackets or clips.
For those of us who use the iPad in wide screen mode, we added a hidden latching system to keep the screen at two optimal angles. Of course, the screen can be kept at almost any angle you desire but the latching prevents slippage in widescreen movie and typing orientations.
This feature also allows HEMING to be used like an open book- especially while standing or walking. The latching system will hold the folio at a comfortable angle to hold the iPad like a book.

Note: Computer displays cannot accurately reproduce the shades and multi-tone patina of natural leather. So to help you choose between the leather shades, we will send leather swatches (key chain tags) to all our backers as soon as project meets the goal.
To find the best leather in the world we didn't have to travel far - and found it right here in USA. We partnered with two tanneries that make the best veg-tan leather in the world. Their vegetable tanning process can take 30 to 90 days, but produces a luxurious material that matures with grace- as it survives the test of time.
We only use the top grain leather that has the epidermal layer intact. This leather retains the character of bovine skin with the authentic marks and grain pattern. It is not buffed or coated with synthetics- every grain, every scar and every mark you see on it is natural and varies from piece to piece. There is no embossing or printings. The multi tone patina, the lines and the folds that develops over time, will further add to its authenticity. So the more it is used, the better it looks- after all, leather like this is going to last a lifetime- if not more.
Leather for HEMING will be cut from these vegetable-tanned leather. Note how a HEMING(Mini) is dwarfed by the sides of leather.
What makes HEMING even more unique is the way it is crafted. The leather is shaded and split to our specifications by the tanneries. We then cut, process, assemble and stitch the edges.
We reinforce the edges of HEMING the old fashioned hand-stitching. Saddle stitching is a particular way of hand stitching with two needles and one thread- since every stitch is criss-crossed, the stitch will not unravel even if one thread is compromised. Saddle-stitching has been used for making horse saddles , even before the introduction of sewing machines. When done correctly, saddle-stitching produces uniform and perfectly aligned stitches that sewing machines cannot produce.
Once stitched and finished, we deep emboss our distinct logo and the 'makers mark circle' to the grain side of leather. The logos are embossed about 1mm (0,04") deep into the grain surface of leather. Look closely, and you will find the 3 dimensionality of logo as a testament to the authenticity of the full grain leather in HEMING.
To make HEMING possible we had to find a unique attachment method for HEMING without any corner brackets and clips. So we developed the GECCO Sticktion Grip System. It does not use any adhesives yet creates a strong grip on non-porous materials. GECCO is made with an acrylic base with millions of tiny cells to develop adhesion forces to surfaces such as aluminum. These attachments improve over time, to develop a stronger grip. Lack of adhesives eliminates contamination issues or loss of adhesion due to normal humidity and temperature variations.
Removing iPad from HEMING is even easier, just peel off from one corner and it detaches with out residue. In the event GECCO is contaminated, just wipe it with an alcohol swab. This makes GECCO reusable multiple times. GECCO worked well in initial trails, but we tested it to the extremes before we tried it in HEMING prototypes.
We have been designing, crafting and shipping leather articles for over a year. We selected the leather and established relationship with two tanneries. Our process is unique, we use computer aided design for precision design; but use traditional handcrafting with highly trained craftsmen.
Our team has worked in several technology areas with several decades of experience in product development, manufacturing, operations, and project management. But now we are applying that experience in creating one of a kind articles with genuine leather. The dedication and passion to deliver the best in class articles is reflected in the customer reviews. We cannot wait to get going and make HEMING a reality. And now we need your backing and support. When you see HEMING being used in a cafe or in an airport, you would proudly realize that YOU helped make it happen!
Once again, from all of us at Castello DaVarg team, we thank you for your support.
Also, please don't forget to share the HEMING project with your family and friends !!
Risks and challenges
Though we have experience with leather, design, development and fulfillment,we recognize that HEMING is an advanced project for us. We have identified few challenges and are working on mitigating them. If you think of something we missed, just let us know and we will address it as soon as we can.
Design: We have completed the designs for all three variants. So far we have not seen any issues, but we would rather find them before production than later. So the prototypes are undergoing various testing. If we see any design issues we will have to make necessary changes and retest before we move to production.
Materials: We have identified our leather, tested it and perfected the shades. We have relationship with two US tanneries supplying our leather. The output from tannery is several hundred times our requirement, so we feel certain that the leather supply will not be a bottle neck.
Crafting: We are working to ramp up faster and hire and train more artisans, since we have already done that in the past one year. We are also establishing the quality checks to ensure all articles meet our stringent quality requirements as we ramp up.
Fulfillment: As simple as it may seem, we know that shipping the right article, in the right packing to the correct address can be a challenge. We are now working on packaging designs. Our automated fulfillment solution shipstation.com has made our fulfillment process easy and error proof.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
