About

The alternative literary magazine is back and ready for relaunch.

Launched in mid-2016, 404 Ink sought to publish the brilliant and often bizarre new writing from upcoming and established talent alike across fiction, non-fiction, poetry and features. After four successful issues we took a break to step back to focus on the other books we were publishing, to then have time to look at the magazines we'd published and ask: if we come back for Issue #5, what do we want it to be?

The answer? Bolder, brighter, more stylish, slimmer format, more engagement with 404 as a whole, and deeper interaction with the themes we choose for the mags. Issue #5 is packed with lovestruck space geckos, stationery aficionados battling a lack of gravity, the loneliness at the vast expanse of the universe... So, now that we know what it will be, we need your support to fund it.

404 Ink is an award-winning, alternative independent publisher run by two publishing freelancers, Heather McDaid & Laura Jones. We publish literary magazines and books, including the bestselling feminist anthology Nasty Women, hilarious breakthrough debut Chris McQueer, flash fiction powerhouse Helen McClory, poetry wonder Nadine Aisha Jassat, and more. We launched in November 2016 with the first issue of our magazine as a way to discover, spotlight and support new writers from across the UK, and the world at large, and are relaunching the mag this summer. Learn more at 404ink.com and @404ink.

"Without platforms like 404 Ink promoting underrepresented and silenced voices, there would be little light left in the future of the media.” - Refinery29

And who is the creative team?

The magazine relaunch has been run by Imogen Stirling, a spoken word artist and theatre maker (and 404 Ink-er!), who has led the revamp, commissioning, editorial and more. Her 5★ show #Hypocrisy debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe 2018, with a UK and international tour underway. She works as a freelance proofreader and editor, and translates French film scripts. @imogen_stirling

The covers of Issue #5 and #6 (unveiling soon!) have been designed by the amazing Letty Wilson, who we met through her work on We Shall Fight Until We Win.  Letty is a comics artist and illustrator based in Glasgow. In 2017 she won a Scottish Independent Comic Book Alliance award for her first graphic novel, A Stranger Came to Town. Her recent work includes Smudged, autobio short comic for Secret Loves of Geeks, edited by Hope Nicholson and published by Dark Horse, and illustrations for Into the Dungeon, a choose-your-own-path book written by Hari Conner. You can check out more of her work at toadlett.com and @toadlett.

Between them they've made a beaut inside and out.

So what does this new magazine look like?

Gone are the days of the doorstopper mags (the first four weigh about half a kilo each, for real, that's how packed with talent it was), and it's certainly brighter (we're moving from black and white insides to COLOUR). We've packed just as much talent into a much neater package, and will be publishing in thematic pairs: summer 2019 is SPACE and winter 2019 is EARTH. Practically, it's around 100 pages and 268mm x 198mm. Here's a look at the cover.

We promised bright and colourful, so here's a sneak peek at the insides...

Who and what is in it?

For Issue #5, we'll be publishing work from Alycia Pirmohamed, Annie Summerlee, Ashley Cline, Asmaa Jama, David G Devereux, Georgia Dodsworth, Helen McClory (book excerpt), Kathryn O’Driscoll, Lucy Jane Santos, Marcus O’Shea, Mark Fleming, Mark Gallie, Rhiannon Walsh, Rikki Santer, Sean Wai Keung, Stefan Mohamed, Stephen Watt, Stuart Kenny and Tom Pickles. Plus, a 404 corner to catch up on our amazing authors and books, loads of recommendations, and features including first Scot in space Brian Binnie, Khadija Osman of Round Table Books, Kate Howells on why Space Is Cool As Fuck, and Adriana Ocampo, Science Program Manager at NASA; plus, we yell about some great books, as always.

Why Kickstart it?

We love our lit mag as it was our very first creation, and as part of the relaunch we want to reach new readers who've never heard of 404 Ink or our work before. We felt the best place for that was Kickstarter. Past campaigns here have introduced us to lots of fantastic readers who stuck around to discover the other amazing writers we work with in our magazines and books. It's the perfect place to reach out to those with a love of reading, science, space, and the unexpected. The most important thing to us beyond publishing writing and writers we absolutely love is to make sure as many people as possible know about it and read their work!

As for the money...

We have already received funding towards part of the magazine relaunch from Creative Scotland. This covers paying our fantastic contributors and designer, and part of our printing has been covered, but there's still a lot that goes into making a magazine. The money from your pre-orders of Issue #5 and #6 will go towards the additional fees for the new issue, and towards the continuation of the magazine going forward:

If we exceed our target, it will cover the full costs of Issue #6, and pay for typesetting, marketing, distribution and the various hidden costs of publishing. We've also got some fun ideas on bonuses for each issue that become more likely with the project's success. To celebrate the pairing of Space and Earth, and do a tiny bit towards taking care of the planet we call home, we'll also be donating $1 from every copy of the magazine sold to plant a tree.

The goal of the Kickstarter is to bring new readers across the world to a fantastic array of new writers, so you'll be able to get...

  • the digital and print versions of Issue #5 on its own
  • or Issue #5 bundled with Issue #6
  • a mystery bundle where you'll get two random back issues of the magazine with your new pair at a discount
  • our last few full sets of the magazine
  • and - if you're into being a completionist - our last ever print copy of Issue #1: Error

Previous issues include writing from Chris McQueer, Nadine Aisha Jassat, Jenny Lindsay, Helen Sedgwick, Michael Pedersen, and more; with features including author Jade Sharma, tattoo artist Jackie Huertas, My Chemical Romance's Frank Iero, the comics legends behind The Sad Ghost Club and Femme Magnifique, and the all-girl high school robotics team Girls of Steel!

404 Ink can only continue its mission to publish writers and work we adore through the support of those who buy our books and magazines. We appreciate your support.

Risks and challenges

Risks to the magazine itself are slim - most of the work is underway and this is the fifth issue in a pre-existing publication. 404 Ink publishes multiple high quality titles to deadline annually. We will send to print allowing plenty of time for slippage. We are printing a lot more of this issue than we have previously, which means there is more risk to our own cash flow than there is to the product itself (of which we'll have lots!).

Speaking of cash flow, 404 Ink is a small publisher choosing to invest a lot more money into our writers and publications than we ever have before. This means that as we enter a particularly tight time for 404's finances, the future relies on us consistently selling magazines and books to ensure we continue as we hope to!
