We were inspired to write a book about lost shoes because, since becoming mothers, it happens all too frequently ... searching the house high and low (well, mostly down low!) for our little reader's favourite pair of shoes! If you have ever found yourself doing the same, then you will LOVE this story!
Our goal is to encourage adults to read aloud and as often as they can to children by creating a picture book that big readers (like you!) will want to pick up and read just as much as our little ones. This builds many important foundational skills that help our children grow into creative, curious and confident big readers.
We do this by putting you in the author and illustrator’s shoes just for a moment! Create a picture book your little reader will instantly connect with by putting the people closest to them (that's you!) and their favourite possessions (their shoes!) into the story.
Where are my shoes? is a personalized picture book for little readers aged 0-6yrs.
In this story, your little reader recalls all the wonderful adventures they shared with you throughout the day to try and remember where they left their shoes. Their shoes are clever, if perhaps a little cheeky, but your little reader is on the case and looking for clues to solve the mystery! Watch as they delight in a magical adventure all about them and their resolve to find their lost shoes!
We want to keep an element of surprise for when you receive your book ... but here are some sample pages from our test print. This book was created for Olivia who has a favourite pair of red shoes and shares her adventure with Daddy.
This is a book your little reader will want to keep and treasure forever, and which will trigger special memories of all the adventures you shared together!
A personalised book also allows us to celebrate diversity. We loved reading picture books as kids, but rarely saw illustrations of characters that looked like us. This picture book builds your little reader's confidence as they see themselves as not only the hero of the story, but the problem solver as well.
In our picture book we use techniques such as rhyme and repetition to help build early literacy. Personalising it with people and possessions familiar to them is exciting and not only nurtures a love of reading, but fosters the relationship between the little and big reader.
Our picture book is designed to be read aloud with children. Reading aloud helps children build a large vocabulary, stimulates active listening skills and teaches them what you - a fluent reader - does when you come across a word you don't know.
We believe every child is a little reader at heart. We believe so strongly in the power of reading that for every picture book purchased, we donate one book to our not-for-profit children's literacy partner organisation. You can follow our progress at #Read4More.
We are two sisters, Naomi and Frances. Naomi, based in Singapore, is a mother to be, and Frances, living in Australia, has two little readers (and one on the way) who are constantly pulling books out of the bookshelf!
We love books. We love reading. And we love creating stories that bring little and big readers together. As little readers, we immersed ourselves in books … captivated by great adventures, intriguing characters and the beautiful, enchanting, and often funny illustrations that brought stories to life.
Naomi is a member of the International Writers Association and Frances is a member of the International Literacy Association and the Children's Book Council of Australia.
When we are not reading or writing stories, we enjoy giving back to the community in the best ways we can - Naomi volunteers for an underprivileged children’s reading program and a women's employment service, while Frances is on the Board of two not-for-profit organisations supporting women and children in need.
We searched the world high and low for the perfect illustrator for our story. We have been lucky enough to work with a talented young artist, Diana Madelo, based in the Philippines. We want to create a hand-drawn feel, inspired by the children’s books we grew up with. Here is a peek into how our collaboration with Diana evolved during the creation of our picture book.
Yes it is! We have designed a fun and interactive web page to capture the information required to create your story (no forms to fill out here!).
You simply pick a pair of shoes that resembles a pair your little reader owns - like their favourite pink gumboots, or their bright blue sandals. You then add your child as the main character in the story and who they share their adventure with (perhaps you, an aunt, uncle or grandparent?). When they see themselves wearing their favourite pair of shoes, they will instantly recognise themselves as the hero of the story!
Pick your shoe! Oh so many choices!
Everyone has a favourite pair of shoes, especially little readers! Pick a pair your little reader loves to wear. You can pick from shoes, boots, gumboots/rain boots/wellies, sandals and sneakers or trainers. And they can be any colour of the rainbow! Here are a few examples of some favourite shoes:
Create your little reader! Is that me? Yes, it’s you!
There is nothing more exciting than finding yourself in the story … of course, you must look the part! Create your little reader by choosing their hair colour, hair style and skin tone. Our characters have been created with diversity in mind! Say ‘hello!’ to some of the characters we have created:
When we put it all together, we create a unique story about your little reader and an exciting tale of (not so) everyday adventures to find their lost shoes! Oh, and how exciting is it to grace the front cover at such a young age?!
It is important to us that we deliver a high quality picture book - so we've had it reviewed by a former children’s book publisher and two professional children’s book editors - and we’re happy to say we’ve received great feedback! They have all also confirmed the target age of the story is 0-6yrs.
In addition, we nervously subjected it to rigorous testing with two of the biggest critics of all - our home grown Little Miss 3 and Little Mister 2 - who give it a big thumbs up (*huge sigh of relief!*). They keep asking to read the "my shoes" book! We hope you LOVE it as much as we do!
We have put together a range of shoe-pendous rewards exclusive to Kickstarter. Our super early bird supporters get rewarded with up to 20% off RRP, priority delivery and signed picture books! Oh, and shipping is included! You can read the full description of each reward and support our project here!
**Note: Our Kickstarter funding target is in SGD. The USD and AUD values below are approximate only and based on exchange rates as at April 2018.**
If you LOVE our picture book as much as we do, help us reach our funding goal by sharing it with your friends and family!
If you have any questions about our picture book Where are my shoes? or Red Shoe Stories, please don't hesitate to contact us at email@example.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
Risks and challenges
We categorise this project as LOW RISK.
The story is finalised and the illustrations (including all customisations) are complete. The story was reviewed by a former children's book publisher and two professional editors. A book designer was engaged to assist with the final creation and layout of the front and back covers and storyboard.
The printer has been selected after a thorough review and due diligence (including site visits and test prints) of short-listed firms. We have conducted 3 rounds of test prints in both softcover and hardcover, and we are delighted with the print quality and materials selected.
The website has been designed by a professional UI and UX specialist and we have engaged a website developer with extensive experience in user interactivity, real-time customisations and animations.
Our picture book will be made available on our website. The purpose of our Kickstarter campaign is to help us fund the website development, including a back-end system to manage all the user customisations to create each unique picture book.
Now, all we need is the Kickstarter’s community to help us LIFT THIS PROJECT OFF THE GROUND so we can send our story to little readers ALL OVER THE WORLD!
