The Book of the Un follows my first book: The Book of the Is, a how-to manual and philosophical clusterfuck for people who want to live their life as art with examples of messy art collaborations and chaos magic bullshit. The Book of the Is was all about failure and Show. That for a Show to be magical, you have to understand Severe Comedy™, understand that there are no consequences, and calibrate to failure as success’s more interesting and attractive twin.
Now it’s time for The Book of the Un, a book about Control. It’s about the patterns that I have witnessed over decades of experience with emerging art organizations. It deconstructs the systems that foster the Chaos that creates the ecology that makes the kind of art that changes the world. What works and what doesn’t. It’s a fascinating topic and I just got sick of waiting around for somebody else to write this book.
We’re in a “Movement of Movements.” Festivals are springing up like weeds; arts collaboratives are emerging as a potent force; people are seeing that slivers of the fringe are unoccupied and settling in. There is a real estate-style land grab happening in the arts. Non-profits are opening in every sector seeking greater donations every year. Everyone, everywhere is in a movement due to the proliferation of our communication tools. Something truly amazing is happening.
But most of these groups will read from a script that doesn’t have a happy ending. Not just for their content, but as organizations. This new resonance of art calls for a new kind of arts organization, but most groups keep applying the models that didn’t even work 50 years ago…
That’s not the kind of failure we need.
In the past three + decades I've been close to a lot of successful and unsuccessful art catastrophes pretty much full time… from the early 80’s punk rock DIY movement to Burning Man, from maddening collectives like CELL Space to Camp Tipsy. From the All World's Fair to SRL. I’ve owned a few venues. I've seen amazing works of art crumble and fade. I've watched a bunch of outcasts stumble upon charting new paths in culture using innovation and tenacity. I have a thesis, but let's leave it up to this Kickstarter to see if it actually gets put on paper!!!
The Book of the Un is about gift culture. We need a way to make money work for us while thinking outside of commerce. We need a global thesis that supersedes petty kings and commodities.
It’s about how we get to an artists constitution, an artists democracy, sovereign outside of governments bound by lines on maps.
It’s a thesis by a man of uncommon understanding who didn’t sell out. (me!)
By contributing to this Kickstarter, you’ll get a copy of The Book of the Un and a ticket to the 111 Minna release party on October 1.
At any level, your contributions make this happen.
#1 ) If we fund over $20,000, we will put a fold out poster of the gift graphic in every book. 3 feet by 3 feet. For an extra $6.00 we can mail it to you in a tube if you wish to frame it.
#2) If we fund over $25,000, we'll print a chapbook of a dozen stories from the Damnlist. The email list from my scrappy, comedic and tragic young years trying to do good works. It would be 60 pages (or so) and include Death Sled Flambe, Batteryman, Shuck and Jive, the Un-named Story and the Endless Warehouse. My early writing was raw and personal, and is no longer on the web.
If we go over $30,000, there will be more stretch goals. I'll come up with something... I always do!
Risks and challenges
There are zero risks. If this is funded, I'm going to write this book. The challenge is to make it something worth reading. I have every confidence I will fail to do that in a worthwild and brilliant way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
