The Return of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine A Success!

In our first two years of this new incarnation, we hit our quarterly schedule on time and with larger issues than planned. We also put out three Pulphouse books as we had promised in our first Kickstarter drive.

So eight issues and three books. A total success in our first two years.

Shocking! Amazing! And a great deal of fun!

But we're not done. Not by a long ways. Now we need your help going forward. We hope you will not only renew your subscription, but take us up on some of the wonderful rewards and add-ons we have available. Everything helps us keep the high-quality fiction going for the next two years.

And we will have some really spectacular new books and stretch goals if we can get to them.

Pulphouse Fiction Magazine is back, growing and stronger than ever. And with your help, we'll keep growing for years to come.

Issue Zero

The History of Pulphouse.

In early 1987, sitting around a dining room table, two young fiction writers (Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith) came up with the idea for Pulphouse. And by the end of that year they had published two issues of the acclaimed Pulphouse: A Hardback Magazine and had bought the equally acclaimed Axolotl Press.

On January 1st, 1996, Kris and Dean dissolved Pulphouse Incorporated, eventually selling all assets and the name to WMG Publishing Inc. Pulphouse’s many original projects drifted into history. Some say legendary history since it had won the World Fantasy Award and garnered numbers of major award nominations, not counting all the loyal subscribers.

One of the projects shut down in 1996 was Pulphouse: A Fiction Magazine, edited by Dean. It had existed for nineteen regular issues plus an Issue Zero and got three Hugo Award nominations.

Twenty-one years later (two years ago), Pulphouse Fiction Magazine returned as a quarterly magazine. Same editor, same attitude, many of the same writers. And many new and innovative writers who were just kids when the first Pulphouse Fiction Magazine existed.

The First Eight Published Issues of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine.

 What Exactly Is Pulphouse?

The best way to describe Pulphouse is “high-quality fiction with attitude.” Pulphouse stories often go where other stories wouldn’t dare.

High-quality fiction and great stories remain first and foremost.

Second, Pulphouse not only has great stories, but it has a lot of them. Usually over fifteen short stories in every issue. Plus other features.

Third, Pulphouse has no genre restrictions. You will find an sf story followed by a mystery followed by a fantasy or western, all slightly twisted and most definitely entertaining and high quality. All “Pulphouse” stories.

And everything with attitude. Fun attitude. Fiction should be fun and entertaining and Pulphouse Fiction Magazine is the flagship for fun and quality short fiction.

Issue #8 Coming This Fall

So Who Are We?

The new Pulphouse Fiction Magazine is published by the acclaimed WMG Publishing Inc. based on the Oregon Coast. WMG Publishing has almost a thousand different titles in print and is growing solidly as a mid-sized publisher.

WMG already publishes Fiction River, a bi-monthly anthology series, as well as a number of other smaller magazines.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling writer Dean Wesley Smith returned as editor of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine, bringing back the attitude and editing eye that got Pulphouse three Hugo nominations and thousands of subscribers.

Kristine Kathryn Rusch functions as executive editor. Allyson Longueira is the publisher, Gwyneth Gibby is the associate publisher, and Josh Frase is the managing editor and website guru.

Three Special Pulphouse Books in the First Two Years

Schedule and Other Details

Pulphouse Fiction Magazine is a quarterly publication. The first official issue came out in January 2018 and we have done a seasonal issue ever since.

All issues are made available DRM-free in epub and mobi formats. There will also be a paper edition of every issue.

Eventually we hope that the Pulphouse Fiction Magazine website will also feature authors and stories and will be an active site to enjoy special features of the magazine. We did not have a chance in the first two years to make that happen, but we have it planned in the next two.

One Major Surprise

As we did in the first incarnation of this magazine, we will occasionally have a special guest editor for an issue, someone who is not only a top editor, but knows Pulphouse Fiction Magazine. So we are very proud to announce that in the next year or so we will have top editor and writer Mark Leslie guest editing an issue. What wonderful fun!

Note: To our international backers who want print rewards—we apologize for the print rewards being made available within the US only. The high cost of international shipping would have made those rewards untenable for international supporters. However, we do offer subscriptions for our international readership. Please visit the Pulphouse website for more information at www.pulphousemagazine.com.

Issue #13 Coming in the Winter of 2021

Stretch Goals

In the event that we exceed our goals, we will follow jubilant celebration with added rewards:

Stretch Goal #1... The Wow! ($7,500)

ACTIVATED!! (And let us simply say, "Wow!")

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Pulphouse Fiction Magazine subscription drive at the $5 level or higher will receive one additional electronic copy of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine.

In other words, the length of your subscription will be extended by one extra electronic issue as our way of saying thanks.

Stretch Goal #2... We Want to Dance ($10,000)

ACTIVATED!! (And yes, we will be dancing. Already are, actually)

If we reach this amount we will head to one of the brand new nightclubs in Las Vegas and watch people dance, since no one wants to see Dean try to dance. But Kris might be out there on the floor, but not many will want to see that either.

Besides that, we’ll create a special book called Aliens Among Us: At Least in the Pages of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine. Everyone who supported this project at the five-dollar level and up will get an electronic copy of the book as our way of saying thanks. (Ships in summer 2020.)

Stretch Goal #3... We Could Tumble with Delight ($15,000)

ACTIVATED!! (And yes, we are tumbling and I will get myself filmed on a trampoline and post it on my blog.)

If we reach this amount, we'll head to a brand new trampoline park and do flips on the trampolines and even post a film of it later on the website. That's always fun, seeing an editor upside down.

Then, in gratitude, we will give you two different nifty bonuses. First, we will create a book that will ship in late 2020 called That's Really Messed Up: Stories from Pulphouse Fiction Magazine. Everyone who supported this project at the five-dollar level and up will get an electronic copy of the book as our way of saying thanks.

Secondly, you will get your choice of any lecture WMG Publishing does for writers. (If you are not a writer, you can gift this.) A $50 value.

That's right, we hit this level and you get both.

Stretch Goal #4... We Could Do Laps ($20,000)

ACTIVATED!! (And yes, both Kris and I will be running and in a month or so I will film it and post it on my blog.)

Want to see editors running with delight around a track? Yup, help us hit this goal and you will see it, on film, on the web site. It will be entertaining, I can promise that.

And, to reward our amazing supporters, we again have two more rewards. First, we will do a special book that will ship in early 2021 called A Twist of the Knife: Mystery Stories from Pulphouse Fiction Magazine. Everyone who supported this project at the five-dollar level and up will get an electronic copy of the book as our way of saying thanks.

Secondly, everyone will get their choice of a Classic Workshop that WMG Publishing offers. This is a $150 value. Not kidding. (If you are not a writer, you can gift this and make a writer friend very happy.)

Stretch Goal #5... We Do A Zip Line ($25,000)

ACTIVATED!! (And yes, in celebration, I will snap a GoPro camera on my head in October and go down the Fremont Street Zip Line and post it on my blog.)

But even better, we will add two very, very special books.

Hugo Award Winning editor Kristine Kathryn Rusch will put together a very special Best of Pulphouse: The Hardback Magazine and we will give every supporter of this kickstarter an electronic copy.

And at the same time, editor Dean Wesley Smith will put together a very special Best of the original Pulphouse: A Fiction Magazine from the early 1990s and we will give every supporter of this kickstarter an electronic copy.

That's right, two books that will be available in early 2021 with fantastic stories from the first incarnations of Pulphouse

Why will it take so long? Because it will take that long to track down authors and (sadly) some author estates to get permission to reprint the stories. That is difficult and time-consuming work beyond putting the anthologies together that both editors are willing to do if we reach this level.

PLUS FOR WRITERS....  If we reach this level, every supporter of this kickstarter will get the FIVE LECTURES ON MYTHS: CREATION BUNDLE. That is a $200 value. (If you are a lifetime lecture subscriber or already bought this bundle on Teachable, we will give you a $200 credit toward something else.)

So if we can get to this level, every supporter will get an extra issue on their subscription, five anthologies full of amazing stories, a lecture worth $50, a classic workshop worth $150, and a bundle worth $200.

So help us reach this goal. Pass the word. It's almost $450 in value for you and a great deal of help for Pulphouse Fiction Magazine.

-----

Stretch Goal #6... Cats ($30,000)

ACTIVATED!! (Even our cats are running around in celebration. They don't know for what, but they are doing it anyhow.)

Everyone tells us that on the internet, the best thing you can do is have a cat somewhere. So here we go.

In celebration of reaching this level, Kris will do her best to get pictures of our cats and post them. And maybe some of our past cats as well. Easier, much easier said than done.

And, of course, we will do a book of Pulphouse cat stories.

So if we reach this goal, everyone will get an electronic copy of CATTITUDE: The Best Cat Stories from the First Three Years Pulphouse Fiction Magazine.

PLUS FOR WRITERS...Something really major!!!  If we reach this level, every supporter of this kickstarter will get the Pop-Up #6-10 Bundle. That is a $600 value. (If you already have the bundle, or have the #1-10 bundle, we will credit you the $600 toward anything else.)

That's right, I said $600 value. But we have to reach this level.

So here is the total if we can somehow hit $30,000 with this Kickstarter. (Which we just did!!)

-- One extra Issue of the magazine on your subscription.

-- 6 different books in electronic format.

And for the writers or your writer friends...

-- Choice of lecture ($50 value)

-- Choice of Classic Workshop ($150 value)

-- Myth Lecture Bundle ($200 value)

-- Pop-Up 6-10 Bundle ($600 value)

And yes, any reward or any of these extra stretch rewards can be gifted.

VERY LITTLE TIME LEFT!!

So help us get to it! And thanks!!

    Mentorship with Dean Wesley Smith

Last year, Dean Wesley Smith started a program where he would be there to help a writer for an entire year when they wanted or needed help. He reads stories for the writers, looks at covers, consults with business plans, and gives advice where needed.

He is basically a cheerleader for the writers he is working with, helping them walk the path they want to walk.

On January 1st, 2020, he will open the mentor program up for two writers to help them for one year (and beyond...he does not vanish at the end of one year). And since he wants to support Pulphouse Fiction Magazine, his baby since 1991, he decided to let anyone interested go through here.

First come, first in. Limited only to two. This is not discounted in any way, other than you get a two year electronic subscription to Pulphouse Fiction Magazine.
