The Return of Pulphouse

Sounds like a strange movie, doesn’t it?

But nope. Pulphouse really is returning. Honest.

Not kidding.

In early 1987, sitting around a dining room table, two young fiction writers, Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith came up with the idea for Pulphouse. And by the end of that year they had published two issues of the acclaimed Pulphouse: A Hardback Magazine and had bought the equally acclaimed Axolotl Press.

On January 1st, 1996, Kris and Dean dissolved Pulphouse Incorporated. Pulphouse’s many projects drifted into history. Some say legendary history since it had won the World Fantasy Award and garnered numbers of major award nominations, not counting all the loyal subscribers.

One of the projects shut down in 1996 was Pulphouse: A Fiction Magazine, edited by Dean. It had existed for nineteen regular issues plus an Issue Zero and got three Hugo Award nominations.

Now, twenty-one years later, Pulphouse Fiction Magazine returns as a quarterly magazine. Same editor, same attitude, many of the same writers. And many new and innovative writers who were just kids when the first Pulphouse Fiction Magazine existed.

What Exactly Is Pulphouse?

The best way to describe Pulphouse is “high quality fiction with attitude.” Pulphouse stories often go where other stories wouldn’t dare.

High-quality fiction and great stories remain first and foremost.

Second, Pulphouse has great stories and a lot of them. More than twenty short stories in every issue. Plus other features.

Third, Pulphouse has no genre restrictions. You will find an sf story followed by a mystery followed by a fantasy or western, all slightly twisted and most definitely entertaining and high quality. All “Pulphouse” stories.

And everything with attitude. Fun attitude. Fiction should be fun and entertaining and Pulphouse Fiction Magazine is the flagship for fun and quality short fiction.

So Who Are We?

The new Pulphouse Fiction Magazine will be published by the acclaimed WMG Publishing Inc. based on the Oregon Coast. WMG Publishing has almost seven hundred titles in print and is growing solidly as a mid-sized publisher.

WMG already publishes Fiction River, a bi-monthly anthology series, as well as a number of other smaller magazines.

Dean returns as editor of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine, bringing back the attitude and editing eye that got Pulphouse three Hugo nominations and thousands of subscribers. Kris will function as executive editor. Allyson Longueira is the publisher, Gwyneth Gibby is the associate publisher, and Josh Frase will be the managing editor and website guru.

Schedule and Other Details

Pulphouse Fiction Magazine returns as a quarterly publication, with the first issue coming out in January 2018.

But before January, as was a tradition with Pulphouse Publishing, there will be an Issue Zero. Basically, Issue Zero will be a complete issue of the magazine, but will function as a test run.

Issue Zero will be given to anyone who supports this Kickstarter subscription drive if we make our goal.

All issues will be made available DRM-free in epub and mobi formats. There will also be a paper edition.

Pulphouse Fiction Magazine website will also feature authors and stories and will be an active site to enjoy special features of the magazine.

Note: If you were a subscriber to the original Pulphouse Fiction Magazine when it shut down in 1996, please do let us know and we will give you credit for your old subscription, even if you can’t remember how many issues you had remaining. And as an old subscriber, we do hope you will help us get this new incarnation off the ground by subscribing again.

A Second Note: To our international backers who want print rewards—we apologize for the print rewards being made available within the US only. The high cost of international shipping would have made those rewards untenable for international supporters. However, we do offer subscriptions for our international readership. Please visit the Pulphouse website for more information at www.pulphousemagazine.com.

Stretch Goals

In the event that we exceed our goals, we will follow jubilant celebration with the following added rewards:

The OMG ($7,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Pulphouse Fiction Magazine subscription drive at the $5 level or higher will receive one additional electronic copy of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine

In other words, the length of your subscription will be extended by one extra electronic issue as our way of saying thanks.

The Dance with Delight ($10,000)

If we reach this amount we will dance with delight (in private because as we learned with the Fiction River Kickstarter, watching Dean dance is not something that anyone should be subjected to).

Besides that, after the first five issues we’ll create a special book called Snot-Nosed Aliens: The Best Science Fiction from Pulphouse Fiction Magazine. Everyone who supported this project at the five-dollar level and up will get an electronic copy of the book as our way of saying thanks.

The Cartwheel ($15,000)

If we reach this amount, we will probably do cartwheels. (Actually, we had Allyson’s daughter do one for us which was very cute for the Fiction River Kickstarter, so since we on the staff are too old to think of such a stunt, even though we might want to, we will find a kid again to do one and film it in all its cuteness.)

Then, in gratitude, after the first six issues of the magazine, we will put together a special book called No Way: The Most Twisted Stories from Pulphouse Fiction Magazine. Everyone who supported this project at the five-dollar level and up will get an electronic copy of the book as our way of saying thanks.

The Pass Out ($20,000)

We might just pass out if we reach this amount. If we do, we’ll post a video of us passed out. We promise.

And, to reward our amazing supporters, after the first seven issues we’ll publish a special book of stories picked by the readers as their favorites called You Really Liked That? The Readers of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine Pick Their Favorites. Everyone who supported this project at the five-dollar level and up will get an electronic copy of the book as our way of saying thanks.

 2ND STRETCH GOAL HIT!

We did an update thanking everyone for the support and helping us hit a second stretch goal in just one week. But we thought it would be fun to show you the cover for the book you are all going to get now for supporting this project. It will publish after the first four issues of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine are out.

Again, thanks for all the support.

 3RD STRETCH GOAL HIT!!

We did an update thanking everyone for the support and helping us hit a third stretch goal before the end of the second week. We wanted to once again show you the cover for the book you are all going to get now for supporting this project. It will publish after the first five issues of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine are out.

And below the cover is a video we did as promised with a cartwheel. We were very afraid, so we had Stomper do it.

Again, thanks for all the support.

4TH STRETCH GOAL HIT!!

We did an update thanking everyone for the support and helping us hit a FOURTH stretch goal before the end of the second week. We really did almost pass out as this goal was named.

We wanted to once again show you the cover for the book you are all going to get now for supporting this project. It will publish after the first six issues of Pulphouse Fiction Magazine are out. And will be the results of a survey of the Pulphouse readers.

So here is the cover. We really like it. It will be fun book and project.

Again, thanks for all the support.

Risks and challenges

Of course, with any publishing project, there are risks of delays and projects not happening. But Pulphouse Fiction Magazine has decades of experience behind it. And WMG Publishing, the company behind Pulphouse Fiction Magazine is a solid mid-sized publisher.

And with major writers and editors Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith behind this projects, the risks are minimal.

Pulphouse has a track record of years of quality products and quality fiction. Now it is being brought back. We hope you will join us going forward and enjoy the wonderful stories.
