The Third Subscription Drive

Yes, the third one. Wow, hard to believe we’ve been going six years. And still going even stronger than before.

We conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to kickstart our anthology series, Fiction River. Then we followed with a successful subscription campaign in 2014 and another in 2016. Now two years have gone by. It is time once again.

So here is our third subscription campaign—Newer! Better! Stronger! With More Explosions! (Okay, just like two years ago, there are no explosions, but there are more videos, more books, more cats, and better rewards.)

We’re doing this third Kickstarter subscription campaign to once again spare all of us the mess of an actual subscription drive. What’s that? Tons of letters to subscribers, asking them to renew. Even more letters to subscribers of other publications, asking them to join us. We’d rather have fun. And believe it or not, Kickstarters are fun. What’s not to like about cats?

Fiction River: What Exactly Is It?

Fiction River is an original anthology series. Initially, we based it on the anthology series of old—Universe, Orbit, Pulphouse—but rapidly, Fiction River evolved into its own entity.

First of all, Fiction River publishes more than one genre. In thirty-seven volumes now we’ve covered the spectrum, from science fiction to romance, mystery to fantasy. We’ve combined genres, publishing stories that can’t even be categorized.

Second, we publish all kinds of writers. We publish thriller writers alongside romance writers and sprinkle the mix heavily with fantasy and science fiction writers.

Interestingly, we’ve published almost a dozen New York Times bestsellers alongside writers who sold Fiction River their very first story. We’ve published a lot of USA Today bestsellers and bestsellers from other countries. We’ve published Grand Masters, award-winning literary writers, Nebula winners, Lambda winners, Hugo winners, RITA winners, Edgar winners—and future winners of those awards, as well.

So far, in our 37 volumes in print, we’ve published 430 different stories by 141 different writers. Pretty cool, huh?

We even had an original Frank Herbert story.

You want to get a pretty nifty idea of the authors and the stories that have been published in the last six years in Fiction River, go to www.fictionriver.com and click authors. There all the authors are listed and links to the volume in which their stories appear.

Third, we go where no anthology series has gone before. We publish trade paper editions and ebook editions, available in English worldwide. And we keep our volumes in print, so you can get the volume you’ve always heard about at any time.

So Who Are We?

Fiction River needs a large cast to get each bimonthly issue out. The core team consists of New York Times bestselling writer and award-winning editor, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, USA Today bestselling writer and award-winning editor, Dean Wesley Smith, and award-winning editor and writer Allyson Longueira. WMG Publishing Inc. and its wonderful staff (including Gwyneth Gibby and Josh Frase) do contracts, layout, covers, and distribution.

Dean and Kris work as executive editors, ensuring quality from issue to issue, but in the first six years Fiction River had many other volume editors to give readers different perspectives on varied topics. Other editors have included New York Times bestselling writers Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta. Plus professional editors and writers John Helfers, Kerrie L. Hughes, Kristine Grayson, Mark Leslie, and Lee Allred, plus new editor Felicia Fredlund. New voices editing future volumes are Ron and Brigid Collins, Dayle A. Dermatis, Denise Little, and Leah Cutter.

Why A Subscription Drive Now?

Fiction River is self-sufficient, but bimonthly publications don’t remain self-sufficient if they don’t get new subscribers every now and then. That subscription drive we mentioned in the beginning of this piece—that’s the old-fashioned way to get subscribers.

This is a new age, and so we’re designing new methods to bring new readers on board. If you know someone who’ll like Fiction River, buy them a subscription. Or a single volume. Or point them to this wild and crazy Kickstarter project. We’ll be forever grateful.

Audience

What we need most, though, is you. We’ve loved our interaction with our readers over the past six years. We’ve got so much more to share. We have great stories upcoming. And the more readers we have, the more word of mouth we build. The more word of mouth we build, the more subscribers we get. And the more subscribers we get, the more the wonderful stories we can keep publishing.

After all, for us, it’s always about the stories.

We love doing Fiction River. We want to thank you all for the support over the last six years. But we’d like to continue into the future, and to do that, we need your help. We’ve got a fantastic lineup of rewards. So, read on…

Rewards

First, the basics…

• All ebook rewards will be made available DRM-free in epub and mobi formats. Mobi is primarily for Kindle/Kindle app users; Epub works on many platforms, such as Nook, Kobo, and Apple devices.

• All rewards, except for those volumes of Fiction River not yet published, will be made available in early November, unless otherwise specified. For our publication schedule, please visit www.FictionRiver.com

• If you select one of the subscription rewards, and you are a new subscriber, your subscription will begin with volume #30 (Hard Choices), which will be published at the end of October.

• If you are already a subscriber and select a subscription reward, we will simply add the new subscription to the end of your existing subscription.

• You can combine any two rewards by simply pledging the amount of a second reward above the first reward. We will ask you when this funds and is all finished what the extra was for exactly.

• To our international backers who want print rewards—we apologize for the print rewards being made available within the US only. The high cost of international shipping would have made those rewards untenable for international supporters. However, we do offer subscriptions for our international readership. Please visit www.FictionRiver.com for more information.

• We also offer lifetime subscriptions as a reward. After six years, we feel pretty confident that we will be here going forward. You can start your lifetime subscription with any volume past or present. We will contact you after this is all over.

Early Backer Reward

This reward is new for us this year. Anyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $5 level or higher during the first 24 hours of the drive will receive an electronic copy of the novel Spree by Kristine Kathryn Rusch.

High Backer Reward

This reward is also new for us in this year. Anyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $250 level or higher during the drive will receive an electronic copy of the massive nonfiction book The Freelancer’s Survival Guide by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. This book is a must for anyone going into any kind of freelance business, not just writers.

Stretch Goals

We have purposefully made our initial goal very low in order to get more fans more great reading. So in the event that we exceed our low asking goal, this year we have added very special stretch goals every $2,500 going up, with major extra rewards at the big round numbers. Some of these rewards are very nifty. And the top one is something very special, if we can get to those heights. Can’t say Fiction River doesn’t dream big. We always have.

($7,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive one additional electronic copy of Fiction River.

For single-volume rewards, you will receive Volume #31 as your extra.

For three-volume, six-volume and twelve-volume rewards, the length of your subscription will be extended by one extra volume.

($10,000)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic copy of Familiarity, a five-story collection of Winston & Ruby stories, one of the most popular series Kristine Kathryn Rusch has written about cats. (Told you there would be more cats this time around.)

($12,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic copy of Dean Wesley Smith’s political thriller Dead Money.

($15,000)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive two books.

First, looking for a hot summer romance, along with a healthy dose of suspense? Well, stories about that anyway.  We will be doing a Special Edition of Fiction River edited by Kristine Grayson called Fiction River: Summer Sizzles

The book will come out in the summer of 2019 and with Fiction River Special Editions, they will not be offered as part of the regular subscription. The only way to get this book is to back this Kickstarter.

Secondly, if we reach this level, you will get an electronic edition of five Kristine Kathryn Rusch's very popular Spade/Paladin stories in a collection called The Early Conundrums

As I said earlier, great fun stuff at the large, round number goals. It gets better so keep reading.

($17,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic edition of the time-travel thriller Snipers by Kristine Kathryn Rusch.  RT Book Reviews called it “…a mind-blowing suspense, a touch of time travel, and a bit of romance…"

($20,000)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive two more books.

First, if you are looking to add some international intrigue to your agenda, at least from your favorite reading nook, we have a volume of stories for you.  We will be doing a second Special Edition of Fiction River edited by Kristine Kathryn Rusch called Spies

The book will come out sometime in 2019 and with Fiction River Special Editions, they will not be offered as part of the regular subscription. The only way to get this book is to back this Kickstarter.

Secondly, if we reach this level, you will get an electronic edition of the fantastic new Kris Nelscott novel Protectors.

This just keeps getting better for anyone who supports this subscription drive.

($22,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic edition of the novel Easy Shot by Dean Wesley Smith. A fun romp dodging killers on a golf course that is the first book in a new series.

($25,000)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive two more books. That’s eleven extra books for everyone in case you are not counting.

First, you want a pet dragon? We can’t help you with that, but we can introduce you to a whole host of dragon characters.  We will be doing a third Special Edition of Fiction River edited by Allyson Longueira called Dragons

With Fiction River Special Editions, they will not be offered as part of the regular subscription. The only way to get this book is back this subscription drive.

Secondly, if we reach this level, you will get an electronic edition of the fantastic Kristine Kathryn Rusch collection Five Feline Fancies.

Yes, even more cats. And dragons as well.

($27,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic edition of the novel The White Mists of Power by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. A high fantasy novel with more twists and turns than a mountain road.

($30,000)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive two more books.

We had so much fun with our Fiction River Editor Saves volume that we decided that if we hit this stretch goal, we will be so filled with loving support that we’ll pay it forward to another group of well-deserved authors.

This one will be called Fiction River: Editor Saves…Again! It will be the fourth special edition in this Kickstarter.

With Fiction River Special Editions, they will not be offered as part of the regular subscription. The only way to get this book is back this subscription drive.

Secondly, if we reach this level, you will get an electronic edition of the novel Laying the Music to Rest by Dean Wesley Smith.

We’re not done yet.

($32,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic edition of the novel The Death of Davy Moss by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. An amazing book about music and love.

($35,000)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive two more books.

That is 17 extra books at this point. Tell your friends to support this subscription drive. This is getting crazy.

Allyson Longueira, after the first year, did a volume called Fiction River Presents: Debut Authors. That volume reprinted all the first story sales in the first year or so of Fiction River. Some amazing first stories.

So we all felt it was time to do it again. A lot of great authors have gotten their start in Fiction River and we are proud to pay them some more money to reprint their wonderful stories in a special edition called Fiction River Presents: More Debut Authors. The volume will be edited again by Allyson Longueira.

Secondly, if we reach this level, you will get an electronic edition of the novel The Slots of Saturn by Dean Wesley Smith. So far the only full novel in his incredible Poker Boy series. But there are over forty short stories in the series. Crazy fun.

($37,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic edition of the novel Alien Influences by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. This novel was an Arthur C. Clarke Award finalist. Stunning and gripping science fiction.

($40,000)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive two more books.

That’s 20 extra books for every supporter of this subscription drive, but now we are in a real stretch goal range, since none of our previous subscription drives have gone this high. Close, but not this high, so we really need your help.

So if we hit here, we are going to do something that we haven’t done before in Fiction River’s six-year history. We will open up submissions for one volume in an open call.

Yes, I said that. Open Call for manuscripts by writers of all levels.

But we got to get to this level first. How it will work is that we will set an anthology topic and announce it, then submissions will be open for only one week. Dean Wesley Smith will do the first read, Kristine Kathryn Rusch will do the second, and it will be co-edited by both. It will be a regular Fiction River volume. (Fiction River pays a base rate of 6 cents per word in case you were wondering for anthology rights.)

Sorry, we will not announce the name of the volume or the topic until we are ready. But we will tell all supporters of this drive the day it opens. In fact, we will add two days on the front of the submissions for supporters of this subscription drive only. So no worry there.

Secondly, if we reach this level, you will get an electronic edition of the novel Bleed Through by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. This book grabs you by the heart.

($42,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic edition of the novel The Adventures of Hawk by Dean Wesley Smith. A thrilling adventure through 1970s Egypt and beyond.

($45,000)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive two more books. (23 books now everyone will get, but who’s counting?)

So if we hit here, we are going to do something once again that we haven’t done before in Fiction River’s six-year history. We will open up submissions for a second volume in an open call.

Yes, I said that again. Open Call for manuscripts for writers of all levels.

Sorry, we will not announce the name of the volume or the topic until we are ready. But we will tell all supporters of this drive the day it opens. We will give all supporters of this subscription drive two extra days at the start. So no worry there.

Secondly, if we reach this level, you will get an electronic edition of the novel Tiffany Tumbles by Kristine Grayson. The first book in the Interim Fates trilogy.

($47,500)

If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher will receive an electronic edition of a brand new, unpublished Bryant Street story collection by Dean Wesley Smith. It will remain unpublished for six months after you get it.

($50,000)

Okay, this is nosebleed level for us, but we think it is possible with a lot of help from all of you. So if we do hit this level, we want to give everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $15 level or higher a very special book.

Kristine Kathryn Rusch has written a fantastic novel called Goldfield. It is unpublished to date, so if we hit this level, everyone will get a copy of the never-before-published novel Goldfield

And it will not be published in any other form for some time after the wonderful supporters of this subscription drive have gotten it.

That’s 25 extra books for every supporter of this subscription drive if we can get to this level. That’s a lot of reading of Fiction River volumes and other novels and collections.

If, for some reason or another, we get past this level, we will add in fantastic extra stretch goals every $2,500 above this.

Risks and challenges

We have done three of these Fiction River Kickstarters before and fulfilled every reward without trouble over the years. WMG Publishing, the company behind Fiction River is very stable, so we feel the risks for this project are light.

    LIFETIME STUDY ALONG WORKSHOPS

Lifetime WMG Study Along Workshops with a Fiction River bonus!
Since the in-person craft Vegas workshops with Kristine Kathryn Rusch are very limited and also you must qualify and be in the right place, many writers either don’t qualify yet or can’t make the trip to Vegas for one reason or another. So Kristine Kathryn Rusch and WMG Publishing have come up with a brand-new way to allow writers of any skill level to study along. It won’t be the full workshop by a long ways, but it will still be pretty nifty. And Dean Wesley Smith will read your stories in the workshops. There are four workshops per year, normally $300 each. As an added bonus, this reward also includes a one-year subscription to Fiction River! New subscriptions start with volume #30 or add the subscription to your existing subscription. Plus, your name printed on the Fiction River website with a special thank you for your kind support. Dean will contact you with more details after this closes.
