The Second Subscription Drive
Since we conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to kickstart our anthology series, Fiction River, then followed in 2014 with a successful subscription campaign, we figured after two years it was time to remind subscribers we are still here.
So here we go again, with a second subscription campaign—Newer! Better! Stronger! With More Explosions! (Okay, just like two years ago, there are no explosions, but there are more videos and better rewards).
But we’re doing the second Kickstarter subscription campaign to once again spare all of us the mess of an actual subscription drive. What’s that? Tons of letters to subscribers, asking them to renew. Even more letters to subscribers of other publications, asking them to join us. We’d rather have fun. And believe it or not, Kickstarters are fun. Even in the midst of fun, however, we need to be serious for a moment.
Fiction River: What Exactly Is It?
Fiction River is an original anthology series. Initially, we based it on the anthology series of old—Universe, Orbit, Pulphouse—but rapidly, Fiction River evolved into its own entity.
First of all, Fiction River publishes more than one genre. We’ve covered the spectrum, from science fiction to romance, mystery to fantasy. We’ve combined genres, publishing stories that can’t even be categorized.
Second, we publish all kinds of writers. We publish thriller writers alongside romance writers and sprinkle the mix heavily with fantasy and science fiction writers.
Interestingly, we’ve published seven New York Times bestsellers alongside seven writers who sold Fiction River their very first stories. But we were a bit snobby on our bestseller count, because we’ve published a lot of USA Today bestsellers and bestsellers from other countries. We’ve published Grand Masters, award-winning literary writers, Nebula winners, Lambda winners, Hugo winners, RITA winners, Edgar winners—and future winners of those awards, as well.
So far, in our 19 volumes in print, we’ve published 257 different stories by 132 different writers. Pretty cool, huh?
Third, we go where no anthology series has gone before. We do regular audio editions. We publish trade paper editions and ebook editions, available in English worldwide. And we keep our volumes in print, so you can get the volume you’ve always heard about at any time.
So Who Are We?
Fiction River needs a large cast to get each bimonthly issue out. The core team consists of award-winning writer and editor, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, USA Today bestselling writer Dean Wesley Smith, and award-winning editor and writer Allyson Longueira. WMG Publishing Inc. and its wonderful staff do contracts, layout, covers, and distribution.
Dean and Kris work as executive editors, ensuring quality from issue to issue, but in the first four years Fiction River had many other editors to give readers different perspectives on varied topics. Other editors have included New York Times bestselling writers Kevin J. Anderson and Rebecca Moesta. Plus professional editors and writers John Helfers, Kerrie L. Hughes, Kristine Grayson, Mark Leslie, and Lee Allred, plus new editor Felicia Fredlund.
In upcoming volumes, Allyson Longueira, M.L. Buchman, and Dayle A. Dermatis will also bring their unique editorial tastes to Fiction River.
A New Addition to the Fiction River family: Fiction River Presents.
In the spring of 2016, award-winning editor Allyson Longueira started Fiction River Presents, combining stories from all the first 19 issues into unique and fun volumes. Fiction River Presents will be published in the months between the regular Fiction River volumes and will be available for subscription as well.
Why A Subscription Drive Now?
Because every independently produced magazine (and really, Fiction River is a magazine at its core) needs an infusion of cash now and then. Rather than get investors, we’re doing a second subscription drive.
Fiction River is self-sufficient, but bimonthly publications don’t remain self-sufficient if they don’t get an infusion of new subscribers every now and then. That subscription drive we mentioned in the beginning of this piece—that’s the old-fashioned way to get subscribers.
This is a new age, and so we’re designing new methods to bring new readers on board. If you know someone who’ll like Fiction River, buy them a subscription. Or a single volume. Or point them to this wild and crazy Kickstarter project. We’ll be forever grateful.
What we need most, though, is you. We’ve loved our interaction with our readers over the past four years. We’ve got so much more to share. We have great stories upcoming. And the more readers we have, the more word of mouth we build. The more word of mouth we build, the more subscribers we get. And the more subscribers we get, the more the wonderful stories we can keep publishing.
After all, for us, it’s always about the stories.
We love doing Fiction River. We want to thank you all for the support over the last four years. But we’d like to continue into the future, and to do that, we need your help. We’ve got a fantastic lineup of rewards. So, read on…
• All ebook rewards will be made available DRM-free in epub and mobi formats. Mobi is primarily for Kindle/Kindle app users; Epub works on many platforms, such as Nook, Kobo, and Apple devices.
• All rewards, except for those volumes of Fiction River not yet published, will be made available in early November, unless otherwise specified. For our publication schedule, please visit www.FictionRiver.com.
• If you select one of the subscription rewards, and you are a new subscriber, your subscription will begin with volume #20 (Last Stand), which will be published in November.
• If you are already a subscriber and select a subscription award, we will simply add the new subscription to the end of your existing subscription.
• To our international backers who want print rewards—we apologize for the print rewards being made available within the US only. The high cost of international shipping would have made those rewards untenable for international supporters. However, we do offer subscriptions for our international readership. Please visit www.FictionRiver.com for more information.
• We also offer lifetime subscriptions as an award. After four years, we feel pretty confident that we will be here going forward. You can start your lifetime subscription with any volume past or present. We will contact you after this is all over.
In the event that we exceed our goals, we will follow jubilant celebration with the following added rewards:
The OMG ($7,500)
If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $5 level or higher will receive one additional electronic copy of Fiction River.
For single-volume rewards, you will receive an additional choice from Volumes 21, 22, or 23.
For three-volume, six-volume and twelve-volume rewards, the length of your subscription will be extended by one extra volume.
The Dance with Delight ($10,000)
If we reach this amount we will dance with delight (in private because watching Dean dance is not something that anyone should be subjected to). Besides that, we’ll create a special edition of Fiction River Presents called Readers Choice.
This will be part of the regular schedule of Fiction River Presents, but we will send it to every supporter at the $5 level and above in this Kickstarter drive. And what makes it so much fun is that we will poll the subscribers and readers of Fiction River for their favorite stories. So all subscribers get to to have a say in editing a copy of Fiction River Presents. (And if you are already a subscriber to Fiction River Presents, we will extend your subscription one volume.)
The Cartwheel ($15,000)
If we reach this amount, we will probably do cartwheels. (Actually, we won’t because we’re all far too old, but we will feel like doing cartwheels and we might convince Allyson’s daughter Nola to do one for us.)
Then, in gratitude, we’ll publish a special edition of Fiction River Presents called Writers Without Borders. This volume will contain stories from all of our contributing authors who live in countries outside the United States, giving our readership international voices with great stories to tell. We’ll send this edition to everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $5 level or higher. (We will extend Fiction River Presents subscriptions by one volume.)
The Pass Out ($20,000)
We might just pass out if we reach this amount. If we do, we’ll post a video of us passed out. We promise.
And, to reward our amazing supporters, we’ll publish Special Saves: A Fiction River Special Edition. Each editor (that’s twelve of them) gets to pick one story that they loved but didn't fit into one of their next anthologies.
Plus, we’ll ask the editors to tell us why they loved that story and why they couldn’t include it in their original anthology. We’ll send this edition to everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $5 level or higher. (We will extend subscriptions by one if this happens.)

Risks and challenges
Of course, with any publishing project, there are risks of delays and projects not happening. But Fiction River is in its fourth year now. And WMG Publishing, the company behind Fiction River is solid.
And with major writers and editors Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith behind this projects, the risks are minimal.
Fiction River has a track record of four years of quality products and quality fiction. We hope you will join us going forward and enjoy the wonderful stories.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
