About this project
Fiction River Kickstarter 2:
The Subscription Drive
Sequels. Gotta love ’em. And since we conducted a successful Kickstarter campaign to kick-start our anthology series, Fiction River, we figured we’d conduct a second Kickstarter campaign to hold our subscription drive.
The second campaign—Newer! Better! Stronger! With More Explosions! (Okay, there are no explosions, but there are more videos and better rewards)—is, of course, a sequel (at least on the campaign part). But we’re doing the second Kickstarter campaign to spare all of us the mess of an actual subscription drive. What’s that? Tons of snail mail letters to subscribers, asking them to renew. Even more snail mail letters to subscribers of other publications, asking them to join us. Lots and lots and lots of email (which could be mistaken for spam) doing the same thing. We’d rather have fun. And believe it or not, Kickstarters are fun. Even in the midst of fun, however, we need to be serious for a moment.
Fiction River Defined—or Not
Fiction River is an original anthology series. Initially, we based it on the anthology series of old—Universe, Orbit, Pulphouse—but rapidly, Fiction River evolved into its own entity.
First of all, Fiction River publishes more than one genre. We’ve covered the spectrum, from science fiction to romance, mystery to fantasy. We’ve combined genres, publishing stories that can’t even be categorized. (We dare you to pigeonhole JC Andrijeski’s “The Moon Was Bitter and Hungry,” from Fiction River: Moonscapes; Travis Heermann’s “Deus Ex Machina,” from Fiction River: How to Save the World; or Robert T. Jeschonek’s “Time Expressed as an Entrée” from Fiction River: Time Streams.)
Second, we publish all kinds of writers. We publish thriller writers alongside romance writers and sprinkle the mix heavily with fantasy and science fiction writers.
Weirdly, we’ve published seven New York Times bestsellers alongside seven writers who sold their very first stories. But we were a bit snobby on our bestseller count, because we’ve published a lot of USA Today bestsellers and bestsellers from other countries. We’ve published Grand Masters, award-winning literary writers, Nebula winners, Lambda winners, Hugo winners, RITA winners, Edgar winners—and future winners of those awards, as well.
So far, in our nine volumes in print (eight regular volumes and one special), we’ve published 75 different writers, some multiple times. We’re developing our own stable of writers—folks whose work you’ll come to love as much as we do, from Annie Reed to Irette Y. Patterson, Leah Cutter to Steven Mohan, Jr.
Third, we go where no anthology series has gone before. We do regular audio editions, produced in-house by the marvelous Jane Kennedy. We publish trade paper editions and ebook editions, available in English worldwide. And we keep our volumes in print, so you can get that volume you’ve always heard about.
Why A Subscription Drive Now?
Because every independently produced magazine (and really, Fiction River is a magazine at its core) needs an infusion of cash now and then. Rather than get investors, we’re doing a subscription drive. Fiction River is self-sufficient, but bimonthly publications don’t remain self-sufficient if they don’t get an infusion of new subscribers every now and then. That subscription drive we mentioned in the beginning—that’s the old-fashioned way to get subscribers.
This is a new age, and so we’re designing new methods to bring new readers on board. If you know someone who’ll like Fiction River, buy them a subscription. Or a single volume. Or point them to this wild and crazy Kickstarter project. We’ll be forever grateful.
A Big Secret [Shhhhh]
We publish as much (or more) fiction annually as all of the other fiction magazines. We do so without a dedicated Fiction River staff. Other magazines have a dedicated staff who handles the work full time. We have always bootstrapped, so the hardworking team at WMG Publishing has added Fiction River onto their very full plates.
You knew we’d get to that, right? If we hit our goal, we’ll use the money to pay authors and magazine expenses. If we surpass our goal, we’ll use the money to expand each volume and, depending on our final total, do another special edition.
What we need most, though, is you. We’ve loved our interaction with our readers. We’ve got so much more to share. We have great stories upcoming. We have a thriller volume edited by Kevin J. Anderson, a young adult volume edited by Rebecca Moesta, a steampunk volume edited by Kerrie L. Hughes, and a completely unclassifiable volume edited by John Helfers.
The more readers we have, the more word of mouth we build. The more word of mouth we build, the more subscribers we get.
We love doing Fiction River. We’d like to continue into the future, and to do that, we need your help.
We’ve got a fantastic lineup of rewards. So, read on…
- All ebook rewards will be made available DRM-free in epub and mobi formats. Mobi is primarily for Kindle/Kindle app users; Epub works on many platforms, such as Nook, Kobo, and iBooks.
- All rewards, except for those volumes of Fiction River not yet published, will be made available in early November, unless otherwise specified. For our release schedule, please visit www.FictionRiver.com.
- If you select one of the subscription rewards, your subscription will begin with volume #10 (Past Crime), which will be published Nov. 18.
- To our international backers who want print rewards—we apologize for the print rewards being made available within the US only. The high cost of international shipping would have made those rewards untenable for international supporters. However, we do offer subscriptions for our international readership. Please visit www.FictionRiver.com for more information.
In the event that we exceed our goals, we will follow jubilant celebration with the following added rewards:
The OMG ($7,500)
If we reach this amount, everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $5 level or higher will receive one additional electronic copy of Fiction River. For single-volume rewards, you will receive an additional choice from the first ten volumes. For three-volume, six-volume and twelve-volume rewards, the length of your subscription will be extended by one volume.
The Dance with Delight ($10,000)
If we reach this amount, we’ll not only dance with delight, we’ll create a special edition of Fiction River called, Debut Writers’ Showcase. This will be a separate ebook of Fiction River authors who were published first with us. Plus, we’ll extend their biographies and ask them really cool questions such as, “Since you’ve been published in Fiction River, what’s happened in your writing career?” One of the goals of Fiction River is to bring you fresh voices in storytelling. We’ll send this edition to everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $5 level or higher.
The Cartwheel ($15,000)
If we reach this amount, we will probably do cartwheels. Then, in gratitude, we’ll publish a special edition of Fiction River called Writers Without Borders. This ebook will contain stories from all of our contributing authors who live in countries outside the United States, giving our readership international voices with great stories to tell. We’ll send this edition to everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $5 level or higher.
The Pass Out ($20,000)
We might just pass out if we reach this amount. If we do, we’ll post a video of us passed out. And, to reward our amazing supporters, we’ll publish Special Saves: A Fiction River Special Edition. Each editor (that’s six of them) gets to pick one story that they loved but didn't fit into their next anthology. Plus, we’ll ask the editors to tell us why they loved that story and why they couldn’t include it in their anthology. We’ll send this edition to everyone who supports the Fiction River subscription drive at the $5 level or higher.

September 16, 2014: Today, we offer more conversations with some of the amazing authors that make Fiction River such a fabulous anthology, including Leah Cutter, Dave Hendrickson, Rob Vagle, Rebecca S.W. Bates, M.L. Buchman and Melissa Yi.
As a special bonus video, we also present author Louise Marley reading a few lines from her story “The Farewell Gift” from Fiction River: Christmas Ghosts.

So, please, share this subscription drive with your friends and family. We still have some great rewards available, including audiobooks, author packages, even a Kobo reader package—and, of course, all of those rewards we just mentioned come with, you guessed it, subscriptions. Great fiction. Great deals. And our undying thanks. What’s not to love?
September 23, 2014: This week, we offer an inside look at WMG Publishing and the staff that ferries Fiction River from our wonderful authors to you, our esteemed readers. We work hard to bring you the best in fiction today.
We can’t thank you enough for showing us so much love in helping us go beyond our funding goal!
What’s missing now? More subscribers!
