About this project
Fiction River is an anthology series, published bi-monthly. Modeled on the successful anthology series of the past, from Orbit to Universe to Pulphouse: The Hardback Magazine, Fiction River will provide a forum for original ground-breaking fiction of all genres.
Each Fiction River volume will have electronic, trade paperback, and limited-edition signed hardcover editions. The volumes will feature the best new and established fiction writers in publishing.
In addition, each volume will have a different editor. Some volumes will have different overall themes. But all six volumes will have two things in common—the high quality of the individual stories, and the overall editors. Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch will use their thirty years of combined editorial experience to monitor the series and make sure each volume lives up to the highest standards.
The first volume will appear in April 2013. The remaining volumes will appear every other month.
Who Are We?
Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch have started innovative publishing projects before. They’re the masterminds behind the legendary Pulphouse Publishing company of the early 1990s. They both won World Fantasy Awards for their work at Pulphouse, and the fiction they published won everything from Nebula awards to Hugo awards, among other awards in the science fiction field.
Smith went on to edit fiction for computer magazines and for Simon & Schuster. Rusch became the Hugo-award winning editor of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. Both retired from editing more than a decade ago to concentrate on their writing. Even though they both missed editing, neither of them wanted to work for someone else’s corporation ever again. Too many excellent stories got turned down by the suits in charge for reasons other than quality. Rusch and Smith wanted to chart their own destiny in editing. Now, the new world of publishing—with electronic books as well as easy-to-distribute trade paperbacks—allows them to return to editing.
Rusch & Smith have started businesses before. They know how to sell books to booksellers, set up subscriptions, and establish an anthology series the old-fashioned way. They first did something like this in 1987. Only they learned a lesson: they underestimated the interest in their project. Later, they overestimated interest in another project. Kickstarter provides both funding and a show of interest from the possible fans of the project.
The money raised will help determine the actual plans for the project and will guide them in building Fiction River along the lines that the fans, booksellers, and readers want.
Where Will The Money Go?
The $6,000 we ask for will cover the advance payments for the guest editor and the authors in the first anthology. It will also cover some (although not all) of the production cost. If we exceed our expectations, we will use the additional funds to begin work on the next volumes. And we will add in more reward levels here.
We hit our first goal in less than 48 hours. Thank you, everyone, for the great support.
New Goal is $12,000
Now that we have made our initial goal, we hope to get funding for more of the first year of Fiction River, to help pay for the second issue author costs, production, and art. And also, for the Fiction River Special Edition we will do the first year. The Special edition is a large mystery collection, not part of the regular Fiction River bi-monthly series. It will be edited by Kristine Kathryn Rusch.
We will be putting up every three or four days more stretch rewards to help with reaching our next goal.
Stretch Rewards Added as of August 3rd
-- Ten limited and numbered advanced proof copies of the Fiction River Special #1, signed by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and sent out two months ahead of the publication of the book.
-- Electronic copy of Fiction River Special #1, a major mystery collection edited by Kristine Kathryn Rusch.
-- Trade Paper copy of Fiction River Special #1, a major mystery collection edited by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Also includes a copy of the electronic edition.
-- Signed/Limited copy of Fiction River Special #1, a major mystery collection edited by Kristine Kathryn Rusch. Signed by all authors and the editor. Also includes a copy of the electronic edition.
-- And some fun. You ever want to decide what a lot of professional writers will write about? Now you have the chance. We have two opportunities for someone or two someones to give professional writers the theme they must write to for an anthology. Your name will be on the title page as well as the person who gets the blame...I mean is credited for the theme of the book.
Stretch Rewards Added as of August 16th
For fans of Kristine Kathryn Rusch's Retrieval Artist series, we have some very special additions.
-- A Kristine Kathryn Rusch new Retrieval Artist series short novel. The novella will be in one of the Fiction River editions, but as a Kickstarter Special, we will put the novella out about six months ahead of the regular edition as a stand-alone book. We have added in the levels for both electronic and trade paper, as well as levels that allow supporters to change their subscription to add in this new book.
The trade paper edition will be signed and limited to the number of books pledged here.
-- Kristine Kathryn Rusch's new Retrieval Artist novel, Blowback, will be out in December 2012. But as a Kickstarter Special, we have convinced the publisher to do ten Kickstarter Special Advanced Readers Copies that we can send out in September, 2012. We have also added in the limited/signed trade paper of the Retrieval Artist novel.
Kris will also sign and number the ten Blowback Advance Reader's copies.
We are committed to this project for a long time to come.
We hope you’re as interested in excellent short fiction as we are and would like to join us in this fun new anthology series. To stay in the loop, follow us on Twitter at @FictionRiver or at www.wmgpublishing.com.
Shipping Note: If you live outside of the U.S., please add $15 for the shipping cost to any trade paper or hardback volume.
Sure. In the pledge area there is a drop-down arrow that will allow you to change your pledge reward or add to or move rewards. Very flexible.
Each editor will be responsible for each anthology, and at the moment, no one is taking submissions. We expect that will change as things progress, so watch for updates.
No, we will not take subscriptions until this Kickstarter Project is over. Fiction River will have a web site and we will give links after Kickstarter is finished.
