PRODUCTION PLAN
Hi. It's Duy here. I'm the founder and CEO of Robotbase. I grew up on my dad's factory floor. Prior to working on Personal Robot, I ran global sourcing & product development company with distribution centers in California, New Jersey, Delaware, and Asia. I've manufactured and distributed thousands of items and millions of units for some of the largest retailers in the U.S. (i.e. Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Costco, Brookstone, Hammacher Schlemmer, Skymall, etc) and Europe (i.e. OBI, Bauhaus, etc).
I'm bringing the same team of manufacturing experts on board with me on this project in all areas: component sourcing, manufacturing, logistics, quality control, and quality assurance on board with me on this project.
Here is our production schedule.
Jan & Feb 2015:
- Finalize our Kickstarter campaign
- Collect product feedback from Kickstarter supporters
- Incorporate Kickstarter feedback into the product
- Finalize the product specs
March, April & May 2015:
- Finalize all component vendors
- Finish all toolings and moulds
- Sign off 3 counter perfect samples prior to production
June 2015:
- Pilot production
- Work with test labs on all certifications and standards
July, August, September & October 2015:
- Mass production
- Finalize the locations of distribution centers
- Finalize packaging
- QA & QC
November 2015:
- Start shipping
December 2015:
- Customer support
- Release the Developer APIs
- Launch App Store

Risiken und Herausforderungen
There is always some risk involved with new products. Our job is to minimize those risks with our years of experiences in manufacturing, product sourcing, logistics, and quality control. Here are some of the risks that we see and we're confident that we can control them.
TRAINING DATA: Our algorithms are working well for the current use cases. But in order for them to work really well, we need to train them with a lot more data. The more data, the smarter and more capable they will be. The risk here is that we couldn’t collect enough data to train them. To minimize this year, we will start collect data early and train them early. Also, we will consider building a crowd-sourcing data framework so that they can be trained over time by our users.
SPEECH RECOGNITION: Our Speech Recognition engine is working well at home or in an office environment. In noisy, public space, it doesn’t work well yet, because there are so many different noises. To minimize this risk, we are looking for a better microphone vendor with microphone array and far-field technologies.
3D DEPTH CAMERA: Finding a good 3D Depth Camera vendor has always been a challenge for all robotics companies. Most of vendors were acquired by major companies like Apple. To minimize this risk, we’re navigating our network to find the right vendors. So far, we found 2 vendors that we’re very happy with.
COMPONENT PRICE CHANGES: Since we use so many different vendors for many different components of the product, there is always a risk that one or more vendors change their prices along the way due to various reasons like oil price increases, fluctuations, salary demands, etc. On the other hand, we don’t want to increase the final product cost as we’ve already committed to the final price with our backers. To minimize this risk, we have 2 or more vendors per key component, so that if we have pricing issue with one vendor, we can work with the back-up vendors.
MANUFACTURING: Tooling is always expensive and hard to get it right the first time for a product of this complexity. It could take a few iterations and anywhere from 30-90 days to get it right. To minimize this year, we’ll have a clear, well-defined specs and requirements. Only work with tooling subcontractors with a proven track record. Be at their facility everyday in person to work with their team until we get it right.
PRODUCT ADJUSTMENTS: There will likely be some minor adjustments to the final product which could happen during production and could be hard or expensive to make adjustments.
To minimize this year, we’ll have a well-defined specs. Having 3 perfectly working prototypes prior to production. Test products earlier to find potential issues early in the production lifecycle.
LOGISTICS: Shipping during the holidays could be delayed due to the shipping traffic. To minimize this risk, we’ll leverage our existing relationships with all of our shipping partners, including UPS, Fedex, Trucking Carriers, and Ocean Freight Carriers. We'll make sure that they're well informed of our schedule. We'll also try to ship out early so that the products can get to you early.
We have years of experience in manufacturing and delivering excellent products in tremendous quantities. There will no doubt be some surprises along the road, but we will watch them closely and control them carefully as we go.

Sure, here is a simplified version of it:
http://www.robotbase.com/ai-platform/object-recognition
You can upload an image or simply paste an image url.
And she'll tell you what she sees in the photo.
We use the same algorithm in the actual robot, just with a lot more data.
-
Sure, we're building a simplified version of it, so that you can play with it via our website.
We'll post the demo up next week, after we're back from CES.
-
This is a little tricky, but we have an idea how to do this. We'll add a live demo of this on our site next week, after we're back from CES.
-
You can name her yourself. Mine is Maya!
-
We understand that having your own personal robot is very personal. So you definitely can change how she looks. We have some great faces so far, and our design team is working hard to add more. Please email us at human@robotbase.com and let us know what face you would like to have. We're collecting feedback from everyone and working on the most requested ones.
-
Yes. When the battery is low, she'll navigate back autonomously to her charging dock automatically. Just make sure that you don't block the charging docks with any objects so that she can find her way back to the dock.
-
Yes, she moves just fine on carpet. About transitioning from hardwood floor onto carpet, as long as the carpet thickness is 12mm (approximately 1/2 inch) or less, then that's fine!
-
Yes, we have to collect an additional $200 for shipping, due to the large size of the box that will keep her safe during transit.
-
Developers will have early access to our SDK including Facial Recognition, Object Recognition, Natural Language Processing, and many more. The hardware will be a little different too, as we'll include some experimental but more powerful components. Developers are also the first to receive the products once we ship.
-
They are very similar in many ways. One major difference is the Operating System. The Developer Edition runs on Android 5.0, while the Research Edition runs on Ubuntu and the Robot Operating System (ROS).
-
We're 100% focused on getting English working really well first. We've been receiving a lot of requests on additional languages. Our plan is to work on the most requested first. Please feel free to drop us an email at human@robotbase.com and let us know your preferred language.
-
Hey, please feel free to email me directly at duy@robotbase.com or our team at human@robotbase.com. We're really swamped with our launch this week, but we'll try to get back to you the same day. Sounds good?
