About this project
The American Values Club crossword is a reincarnation of the beloved, edgy, but now canceled Onion A.V. Club crossword. Generous funding from solvers who enjoy the feature, and want to see it continue independently, will enable us to produce a full year of the puzzle, and hopefully lay the groundwork to continue running it for hundreds more years after that.
The American Values Club weekly xword will be edited by Ben Tausig, and feature contributions from Byron Walden, Aimee Lucido, Tyler Hinman, Brendan Emmett Quigley, Zoe Wheeler, Francis Heaney, Anna Shechtman, Deb Amlen, Caleb Madison, Matt Jones, and Ben Tausig. In other words, the best! (Constructor participation is, of course, subject to change, but the level of quality isn't). As always, expect clues and themes about movies, music, sex, food, drugs ...
If you've enjoyed the puzzles these past six years, and want more of them, lend us a hand! Or if you haven't, but want to try one of the most exciting and hip independent crosswords in the world, give us a try. We promise lots of dreadful dirty puns in return, as well as some special puzzle contests. Most
importantly, we appreciate your generous support. None of this would
be possible without the brilliant, engaged solvers we're so lucky to
have. Thank you.
P.S. Check out some printable sample puzzles here and here!
P.P.S. We've added new stretch goals! Reaching $15,000 will grant every subscriber free access to the past 12 months of puzzles. At $20,000, we'll fast-track any of the following a) a smooth online solving applet; b) a dedicated iOS and PC-based app based on CRUX; or c) an app for Mac or Android. All of these will support online leaderboards and printing. More to come!
P.P.P.S Missed your chance to donate to the Kickstarter campaign? No problem! Subscriptions will be available throughout the year at avxwords.com
Risks and challenges
Reaching our Kickstarter goal will provide a year of support to produce, edit, and distribute crossword puzzles by some of the best constructors in the business.
We're qualified to overcome the challenges that come with an operation like this because we've been doing it successfully for six years, with exactly this amount of money available. From making to editing puzzles, from distribution to contact with solvers, we've got a lot of collective experience among us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Just send us your email address (using the "contact me" link on the right sidebar, or by emailing datageneral at gmail), and we'll add you to the list right away. Emails go out once a week, and include a printable PDF plus an Across Lite (.puz) file for solving on your desktop.
Yes! For the time being (mid-November), you can solve as you always have. Soon, you'll be prompted for a login to get the puzzles via apps. Login info will be provided to all active subscribers.
My grandmother's birthday is in three weeks and she really enjoys the foul humor in your puzzles. Can I sign her up for a subscription?
Absolutely! Simply subscribe as you normally would and provide us with your grandmother's email. if you'd like a double subscription, just double the amount and provide two emails. No problem.
I also just want to say that the phrasing of this FAQ question very closely reflects a number of actual requests I've received.
