Gift subscriptions

Hi friends,

Don't forget about AVCX gift subscriptions -- as an original Kickstarter backer, you get to give them at a discount!

Go to to see what's up. What could your word-loving friends and family members love more than a year's worth (or more) of puzzles in their inbox each week? Best of all, you don't have to leave the house to pick it up, and you can set it to start delivering the puzzles on whatever day you choose, with a special gift message to boot. Last-minute present perfection.

What are you waiting for?

Two-year update

To our original backers:

This is a note of deep and sincere thanks for your support, almost exactly two years ago to the day. The 900-plus people receiving this email generously contributed to the Kickstarter campaign that allowed us to become independent of The Onion and to strike out on our own as the American Values Club.

We've grown substantially -- in subscribers, in technological offerings, and (I hope) puzzle quality. Our purpose is the same as it ever was. That is, humbly, to change the game by producing excellent, frequently groundbreaking puzzles weekly, and to pay our constructors in a way that no one can match. We continue to share revenues by percentage, so that when we get a lot of subscriptions, our constructors make more money. We are the only outlet anywhere that regards constructors NOT as work-for-hire, but as artists entitled to a cut of all profits. I believe in this model very strongly, and I think that two years in it's been borne out by the outstanding work I'm fortunate enough to edit. I hope you've been enjoying it, too. All this was made possible by your initial contribution.

A great many of you backed us initially for two years, and we hope you'll consider re-upping on that for another year, two years, or more. As always (and as it always will be), our original Kickstarter backers get VIP treatment by way of a discount from the normal price, whether you're an active subscriber or lapsed. An annual subscription is normally $18; for you it's $15. A two-year sub is $30; for you it's $25. You can also give subscriptions to friends or loved ones as gifts at those same discounted prices. You should have received an email last night with information about how to go about resubscribing - if you missed it, just send us an email at, and we'll walk you through it. And the gift page is here:

Thank you again for your support!

One year into the American Values Club Xword

Hi again from the American Values Club xword!

It's been quite some time since we've posted an update. This is largely because you've (hopefully) already been hearing from us every week by email.

However, this is a great opportunity to summarize how things have gone for the first quarter of our independent existence. We've added 200 new subscribers in the three months since the Kickstarter ended, and the constructors, through our revenue-sharing agreement, are earning nearly $200 per puzzle. That's richly deserved for their great work, and we have our generous subscribers to thank.

As promised, we've also added support for iPhone and iPad apps, so far including the "Crosswords" and "CRUX" programs. All current subscribers received login info by email that you can use to play on a mobile device. We're working on adding support for more apps as well - stay tuned!

We hope you also enjoyed Caleb's 21x21 bonus puzzle. Look for more bonus puzzles, always free for subscribers, throughout the year.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that we are working on expanding the website to offer even more great exclusive features for subscribers. We'll keep you in the loop on this.

If you are experiencing any problems receiving your puzzles by email, or have feedback of any kind, we would love to hear from you. We take your opinions very seriously and want to get your input. Write me anytime at datageneral (at) gmail.

Oh, and just one more thing: if you're enjoying the puzzles, help us spread the word! Tell your friends on social media or (gasp!) in real life to sign up at for edgy, high-quality independent crosswords. We really appreciate it!
