I have spent a year creating a manuscript for a retro video game inspired fairytale.
It has been illustrated using the 8 bit graphics of the Apple][e system from the 1980s.
I am hoping that it will be taken up and enjoyed by pixel artists, gamers with an eye for the obscure, people who lived and worked with the early generation computer systems... especially any of these folks who have children who love to be read stories.
In its finished format it runs at 90 pages cover to cover inclusive.
Due to its unconventional presentation and length it will not easily find a place in the intake of a traditional publisher.
I would like to establish if there is a market for my work, and engage with an online publishing company to print and distribute it, making copies available in different formats to people who contribute to my campaign.
Risks and challenges
The creative work is completed.
The length of my book due to its number of illustrations makes it pricey to print with the services available.
One small hurdle I can foresee is where the limited templates available to clients of online printing services may not neatly sleeve with the proportions of my illustrations.
Thus far I have looked at Lulu, Blurb and Snapfish as likely online print-on-demand companies to get the initial printing done.
If anyone can point me to other online publishers, that would be most helpful.
