WorkStation is a series of three films that explore contemporary architecture, its promise of ease of use, and its homogeneous luxury. The films look at how competing economic worldviews overlap and interact by focusing on people in the workplace who occupy—but don’t inhabit—their space. We’re working to make the second film in the series, and we want to cast you in it.
The subject of the first film, BROKER, is a singing real estate agent overwhelmed by a marketing pitch about her Trump Tower apartment. BROKER was completed in 2016 and was exhibited at Postmasters Gallery in New York City, at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, OH and at our recent solo show at Cornell University.
For the second film, CLEANER, we turn to the workplace, examining the ways people survive in the “gig” economy. As more and more people create lives funded by precarious labor, we want to investigate the strategies artists find to work and make work.
The film has an illicit party scene, and we want you to be part of it! Whether you’re a friend, an actor, a truck driver, a technology specialist, a student, or something entirely different, you can help make this scene, and the film, happen.
As we begin this new work, we find ourselves already embedded in the new economy, making art from our desks as Creators in Residence at Kickstarter's headquarters. We've decided to make a narrative about the place we are in, about the intersection of new and old ways of making money.
In CLEANER our protagonist leverages her maintenance work into entrepreneurship, creating dance out of corporate space. We believe it is important to underline the existence of "invisible labor" to investigate how modern architecture reflects the social order.
We are visual artists who work with film and new media. We’ve been making project together since the late 90's and have work in museum collections such as MoMA and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Many of these projects are video installations in which we model the world around us, with all its technology and speed.
What will your contribution support?
This is a big undertaking. We are so proud to be the recipients of a grant from the Tow Foundation to support its production. This grant will help, but only gets us part way there.
To produce CLEANER, we want more than just your dollars! Your contribution will of course go towards production expenses (paying crew, renting equipment, insuring it), but we are also hoping you can promise to be an extra in the film. We have a party scene to cast and we need you to come have fun for the camera at a party in Brooklyn.

Risks and challenges
Unlike many traditional films, this project is challenging because its not script driven- so much of it relies on the time it takes to collaborate. We are learning. We are working with visionary people- Hillary Ramos (choreographer), Lori Scacco (composer), Magda Kaczmarek (dancer) Eric Lin (cinematographer) and Caren McCaleb (editor), to create something truly unique. The location we are working with here at Kickstarter will influence many of the images. This adds time and commensurate expense to the project, but immeasurable benefits as well.
We are making objects and photographic prints as we go! We'll ship them to you early in 2019 as the film is being edited.
