Before Homosexuals is the prequel to the Emmy Award-winning film Before Stonewall.
We achieved our fundraising goal on Monday, July 4, 2016 but we hope that won't dissuade you from joining our project and being a part of history. Contributions can continue to be made through our fiscal sponsor, The Center for Independent Documentary at http://documentaries.org/cid-films/before-homosexuals/
In a way, this film is 33 years in the making. When we began the research for Before Stonewall, we intended to begin as you might expect, with ancient history. But "Homosexuality" wasn't even a category at the National Archives at that time.
Because of extreme homophobia in 1983 - be it museums, universities, archives, anthropology fields and foundations that funded such historical explorations, we were unable to go back in our historical timeline to anything earlier than the personal stories of the people we interviewed whose life spans in 1983 brought us to the early 1920's. Those brave individuals became our primary sources, and much of the archival and stock footage material came out from under their beds or from their attics.
Now due to a important changes in the field of historical preservation and primary research in that world we are now able to find the material that allows us to make what we now call the prequel to Before Stonewall.
Part of that reality we had to overcome has been interwoven into the narrative of Before Homosexuals and includes this point of view by the director, John Scagliotti.
We Need Your Help
It has been a challenge to bring together interviews with dozens of experts in academia, anthropology, and art history from around the world. But with the generous support of many foundations and individuals, we have woven together a story that began over 4,000 years ago.
These past months have also been fruitful outside of the edit room, as our crew has traveled throughout Europe, collecting many hours of new, original footage and still imagery.
We hunted down a recent and nearly inaccessible discovery from the Greek island of Astypalea, where a young man professed his same-sex activity by carving it into stone nearly 2500 years ago. Museum Curator Carl Brandon Strehlke lead us on a search of Michelangelo’s Love Sonnets at the Casa Buonarroti in Florence. And we videotaped the beautiful tomb of Oscar Wilde in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris as a lead into our very moving tribute to the many gay martyrs at the end of our film. We've only been able to do these things and much more because of the support of so many who have helped us along the way.
And so now we enter our final production phase of this important film. We call it the "finishing phase." While the feature length edit is complete, there are some critical steps yet to take:
1. We need to hire a composer who will take our musical inspirations and create an original score to complement the beautiful and fascinating same-sex stories we've included in our final edit.
2. We need resources for our final sound mix, including some dubbing and additional sound effects.
3. Resources for final negotiations for material rights from the many museums and institutions which have allowed us access to precious historical material .
4. Color Correction to add a polish to our many stunning visuals.
5. Master work, such as a DCP for distribution, including to film festivals, which will bring our finished film to thousands around the world.

Risks and challenges
This project is very near completion. Because of this most unexpected set backs have already come and have been dealt with. Our project is in a very strong position to be completed as expected (by the end of 2016).
With the continued support of many individuals and foundations, we have been fortunate to see this project through to the point we are at currently, and we are confident that any future unforeseen "hurdles" won't stop us from reaching our goal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
