UPDATE 10.10.2012: Yay, I'm funded!! BUT, YOU CAN STILL DONATE! Yes, that's right, you can still make a contribution and get a book or some of the other things offered. I set the bar a bit low because I wanted to make sure that I reached the goal, otherwise the project wouldn't be funded at all. That's how it works here on Kickstarter... all or nothing. Hey, that's my motto too! Anyway, the more money I raise, the better (obviously) as there are so many unforeseen costs that suddenly pop up AND I can print more books. The books actually cost quite a bit so I usually only print a precious few to send out to the most important contacts, but it's so much more productive if I can extend my reach and send books to lots of boutiques across the country.
Also, I got a little bit of press today -- check out my mention on Lookonline!
Building a collection doesn't end when the samples are done. Each season, designers go through a very lengthy process of research, design & development, fabric and trim purchases, sketching and sample making. I actually make every piece myself from the sketch, to draping a muslin on the form, to the pattern transfer and finally the cutting and sewing. Garment construction involves a huge amount of time and effort, but once the collection is finished, people still need to be able to see it. This season, I decided to forego an expensive runway show/production and just shoot a look book for the line. I have done this a few times already (following my runway shows each season) and it's become clear to me that the book is the most important selling tool a designer can have.
I use these books to mail out to key store buyers and magazine editors. Since I have experience with previous collections, I know exactly how much it costs to organize and carry out the shoot. After the photographer's fee, the model, hair stylist and makeup artists are covered, there is still studio rental, photo retouching, transportation and other expenses. Also, the books themselves are expensive to print and bind with a professional service.
I'm so anxious to create a beautiful book with my new collection!! I love the Rockabilly concept that inspired me this season and I want to share the pieces that I brought to life from a sketch through amazing photos!
Risks and challenges
The challenge is always finding the right team! A model can make or break the shoot, but a talented photographer who understands the vision, yet bring his/her own creative thoughts to the table, is imperative. It's definitely a collaborative effort to make this happen! Let's do this!!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
