This 8–14 June will see the inaugural edition of Block Universe, an exciting new annual festival for performance art in London.
Block Universe brings together a new wave of cutting edge performance art at the cross-section of visual art, dance and music, activating major institutions and venues throughout London over the course of a week. Venue partners include Fig.2 / ICA, Royal Academy of Arts, Somerset House and unique off-site venues such as Stationers Hall and the Art Workers Guild amongst others.
Block Universe’s goal is to create a long-term, sustained engagement with performance art through commissioning and creating opportunities to present performance in London. We aim to support growth within the UK, whilst inviting an exciting selection of artists from abroad, some showing in London for the first time. To help achieve this international outlook, Block Universe has partnered with The Kitchen, New York’s historic venue for experimental performance. In the first iteration of this ongoing exchange, we will show the work of Ellie Ga, also her UK premiere.
Artists include Alex Baczynski Jenkins, Brittany Bailey, Cecilia Bengolea + François Chaignaud, Nicola Conibere, Ellie Ga, Lina Lapelyte, Ieva Misevičiūtė, Jenny Moore, Joe Moran + Eva Rothschild and Florence Peake. 6 new commissions are included in the programme from Alex Baczynski Jenkins, Brittany Bailey, Cecilia Bengolea + François Chaignaud, Jenny Moore, Joe Moran + Eva Rothschild and Florence Peake, whilst Block Universe will also provide the first UK solo presentations from Brittany Bailey, Ellie Ga and Ieva Misevičiūtė. A public seminar will also be held by curatorial research group Consonants, a branch of Vision Forum.
Block Universe is a non-profit organisation founded by Louise O'Kelly in 2014. We have the support of Arts Council England, cultural embassies and a number of other supporters. However, we have yet to reach our target budgets in order to be able to cover the artists fees and production costs for these fantastic performances.
Your support in this first year will make a significant difference to the success of the festival, and contribute towards this unique addition to London's cultural landscape. Help us to make this exciting moment happen!
Risks and challenges
As this is the first year of the festival, there were be many logistical concerns in coordinating performances at multiple events from getting people, props and equipment in place at the right time. We have a stellar team who are used to organising events, in addition to support from all of our partner venues to ensure everything runs smoothly.
The Block Universe team is composed of Director and Curator Louise O'Kelly, Development Manager Burcu Yuksel, Project Coordinator Nicky van Breugel and Creative Producer Francisca Aires.
Between us we have experience of organising large and small scale events and exhibitions in galleries, major museums and off-site venues. From spreadsheets to being hands on and getting stuck in we've got all the bases covered!
All we need is you the audience to come see the product of all our and the artists hard work!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
