Last Year we completed a Kickstarter to release two sets of pewter miniatures themed to the FerrumSky mine that Broken Contract is set in. Now, after over three years of development and playtesting, we want to bring out the rules to the game!
Broken Contract is a miniature adventure game of dramatic action in a dystopian future. When a crew of indentured miners contracted to an interplanetary mega corporation get pushed to the edge, they decide to lash out against the hired security forces that stand between them and freedom.
Broken Contract is designed for 2 or more players and the average game takes 60-90 minutes. Our goal for this Kickstarter is to raise the funds to release the 32 page softcover Broken Contract Rule Book, along with a bunch of new play aids like the Broken Contract Character Dashboard Set (6 dashboards), the Chit Box (containing 30 counters), Critical Successes and Failures Dice Set (8 dice), a 32 card Ability Deck (with 26 new Abilities), a 32 card Equipment Deck (with several cards for new equipment) and a new deck of Blank Character Cards (16 blank Character Cards and 16 blank Character Stat Cards).
The Broken Contract Rule Book comes with the complete rules to the game, quick and easy character and crew creation rules, and three fun introductory scenarios. It comes with all the rules you need to start gaming in the Broken Contract universe.
The Broken Contract Game Tile Set is an optional Add On that provides you with six double sided 8"x8" map sections depicting a room and pillar mine. It includes 6 four-way intersections, 2 "T" intersections, 2 straight tunnels, and 2 "L" turns. This map set is ideal for getting you up and running playing the introductory scenarios, as well as creating your own! These premium board game tiles are printed on 60pt chip board and have a UV coating for durability. They make a beautiful presentation.
Broken Contract, as a game, is not just about fighting one another. Achieving your objectives include classic adventure elements like searching for items, carrying fallen comrades, dive rolling under closing doors, or throwing your enemies down open shafts!
To that end, game play in Broken Contract mixes elements from a variety of board games, RPGs, and miniature wargames to give the players a wide breadth of options within the game. Your chosen character doesn't just have the options to Strike, Shoot, and Walk you will also have reason to Crawl or Dive Roll. In cinematic glory you will Jump over carts and Prone Characters, and even beg for Mercy! to potentially halt an attack. And in most cases a simple roll of the dice will determine your dramatic successes and failures.
Broken Contract comes with introductory scenarios that can be played again and again. During most games the players are grouped into two teams, with one team acting as Black Squadron Security officers and the other as the revolting miners called, Breakers. The introductory scenarios detail an initial "Break attempt" by the rebellious miners and the security officers attempting to suppress it. It makes for a great evening of entertainment, but the adventure doesn't have to stop there.
Broken Contract is designed to be a scenario driven game with a progressing narrative, where the Breakers try to overtake the Black Squadron Security officers, increase their numbers, acquire weapons and helpful items, and find their way closer to the surface and eventual escape. The Black Squadron officers will endeavor to suppress work stoppage and insurrection before it spreads, often by apprehending the Breakers, sounding alarms, sealing exits, and beating them into submission. You can craft this evolving narrative on your own, with your own scenarios and customized characters, or sit back and rest assured that we will be expanding the Broken Contract universe with a series of supplements based around numerous story arcs, including Loyalist miners, the criminal underbelly within the mines, and, of course, life outside the mines after a successful break attempt. But for now we are focusing on the core rules and getting people playing the game.
A number of Add Ons will be added during the campaign, as well as hopefully some Stretch Goals. Each of the Miniature Sets come complete with all of the Character Cards, Ability Cards, and Equipment Cards needed to use them in the game. Additionally, most of the Characters have Ability Cards that are unique to themselves. The two Faction Sets each come with 32 cards, and the Drones come with 16 cards.
The passionate group of writers, artists, and play testers who have made this project possible have completed the initial development. The rules are written and most of the graphic design for all of the components has been done for a while now, completed bit by bit since the last Kickstarter. The Broken Contract Rule Book just needs a bit more graphic design work and copy editing.
All of the initial Add Ons are either ready to go straight to production or have already been produced. The initial funding goal is to cover the manufacturing of 100 copies of the Broken Contract Rule Book here in Milwaukee and 100 copies of the Broken Contract Game Tile Set at TheGameCrafter in Madison, WI. All of the miniatures were manufactured by Valiant Enterprises in Madison, WI. This means no long waits for printing or models coming over from China! I can even show up on the doorstep of any of my manufacturers to save on shipping.

Risks and challenges
The last Broken Contract Kickstarter was a huge learning experience from which to build from. The focus of this Kickstarter is on printed materials because they are largely ready to go and when they are sent to print, they will be in hand a month later. I know this from the last KS. There are many more stages and areas for potential delays with miniatures so they are only a small part of this Kickstarter.
Its worth noting that the backer rewards will ship in batches. With this being a small production run the disparity shouldn't be more than several weeks from first batch to final batch unless this KS far exceeds expectations. Rest assured, communication with the community will be top priority so our backers will know when to expect their rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
