Broken Contract is a Sci-fi miniature board game for 2-8 players. Broken Contract is a game of action and adventure in a dystopian future. When a crew of indentured miners contracted to an interplanetary mega corporation get pushed to the edge, they decide to lash out against the hired security forces that stand between them and freedom!
Broken Contract - Deep Underground introduces the players to the Characters surrounding FerrumSky, an iron mining and manufacturing mega-corporation. Together they toil, deep underground in the mines, working under horribly dangerous conditions. The Prods act as both police and foremen, keeping the labor force in line and ensuring quotas are met. The miners have been pushed to the brink by being forced to work 16+ hours per day under these conditions and have fantasized about overtaking their overseers and fleeing to freedom.
A plan is hatched and a moment seized, and you are all thrown into the action, acting as either the Prods (Security Officers) or the Breakers (revolting miners). A series of scenarios, or Acts, take you through the storyline as the Breakers try to overtake the Prods, increase their numbers, acquire weapons and helpful items, and find their way closer to the surface and eventual escape. Of course the Security Officers will endeavor to suppress work stoppage and insurrection before it spreads, and subsequently suffer through their own declining status as Breakers successfully undermine their corporate masters.
Game play in Broken Contract mixes elements from a variety of board games, RPGs, and miniature wargames to give the players a wide breadth of options within the game. Your chosen character doesn't just have the options to Attack, Shoot, and Walk you will also have reason to Crawl or Dive Roll. In cinematic glory you will Jump over carts and Prone Characters, and even Beg for Mercy to potentially halt an Attack. And in most cases a simple roll of the dice will determine your dramatic successes and failures.

A lot of cool influences went into this game. Here are some of the obvious ones that might pique your interest.
- Firefly - The idea of doing a western themed sci-fi adventure game was originally inspired by Firefly. The "Jaynestown" episode being the most similar story-wise.
- Cowboy Bebop - Western themed sci-fi adventure with rich Character development and dynamic action.
- The Hunger Games/Snowpiercer - Dark dystopian sci-fi revolt tales.
- Cool Hand Luke - One of the greatest movies made about being an imprisoned worker and just wanting to be free.
- Necromunda/Gorkamorka/Bloodbowl - Miniature skirmish games with a lot of opportunities to have moments of both greatness and critical failure in the most cinematic of ways.
- Zombicide - A fairly simple miniature board game with Actions you can perform, Action Points to spend on those Actions, and a quick and easy D6 system to determine success and failure.
- D&D - Where I first became interested in game design as a child, with its robust collection of stats to define what a character's strengths and weaknesses are, and the desire to connect the narrative into a flowing story.

One of the principle goals with this project was to ensure that the components, if possible, were made here in the USA or sourced by people within a few hundred miles of Chicago, IL. The printing will all be done here in Chicago at the worker owned and operated, Salsedo Press. This will increase costs but will allow me to be in direct contact with my supply chain, reduce our carbon footprint, and feel satisfied that no one making this game is being subjected to the conditions the game describes. I think those are all things we can feel good about supporting even if it costs a little more, right?
As a former gaming store owner I fully understand the frustration that comes with feeling your customers are being incentivized to shop online. I also understand the lack of shelf space and risk that comes with carrying an unknown and unsupported game. Rest assured that between seasons we intend to do game night kits to draw customers into your store to play and purchase the game and we have no intention of flooding the market with hard to merchandise supplemental products. If we cross this hurdle expect yearly boxed "stand alone" game expansions. There is a pledge option for 5 copies of the game at a retailer discount but you may want more (or less). I have been lucky that up until this point most of the development has been fueled by my passion for the project and I've been able to wrangle a great group of play testers, editors, and artists to help bring Broken Contract to life. Though the rules are solid and most of the concept work is done, there is still more development to be completed as the final graphic design work is finished, the remaining figures are sculpted, and an editor goes over the finalized rule book. Then after that, the production must be completed by the resin forge and printer. Approximately $7,500 is earmarked for development costs and $16,500 will be allocated to manufacturing 500 copies of the game. Shipping, Kickstarter and Amazon fees will eat up the remaining $6000 and escalate from there.
If the goal is beaten all the money will be directed into manufacturing the Stretch Goals Rewards and upgrading the contents of the game box.
Rest assured that though Broken Contract - Deep Underground is a full stand alone game, it will not go unsupported. I see Broken Contact - Deep Underground as the pilot episode, of a much larger narrative full of engaging Characters and fantastic tales of freedom. Broken Contract - Deep Underground is an introduction to a whole new world of adventure, with expansions to the game pushing the Characters into new environments and situations. All of the contents of Broken Contract - Deep Underground will be fully compatible with everything to come after, and our blog will be a great source for supplemental material between expansions. Broken Contract - Deep Underground is not the end, it is only the beginning.

Risks and challenges
Thankfully, I have considerable experience with small production run manufacturing. I've run a small independent record label as a hobby for 20 years. Believe it or not, the steps involved are very similar. You get the masters made and then get the item(s) manufactured off the masters, while your artist completes laying out the packaging and you get it all printed.
However,as streamlined as this all sounds, the biggest issue is always delays. Every person or organization involved in this process can make a miscalculation somewhere and a deadline is missed for whatever reason, and it can cause a domino effect of missed deadlines, ultimately delaying the release of the game. The best protection against this is to do two things: 1) have as much of the art and text ready to go before production begins and 2) pad the release date with a lot of room for unexpected delays.
Once the game and miniatures are in hand and ready to ship, the next challenge will be getting everything shipped in a timely fashion. People have high expectations in this regard so I want to be up front: unless the Kickstarter crushes my goal, the "team" assembling the games, putting together the orders, and shipping everything out will consist of one member - me. This means that on nights and weekends I will be feverishly assembling and packing, and that will mean someone will inevitably get their package weeks before someone else. I apologize in advance for this inconvenience, but the goal set does not include paying someone to assist me and I can't guarantee there will be volunteers to jump in and help.
Additionally, this also means that it might be possible that with the timing of the delivery date being right around AdeptiCon 2015, someone might receive their package after AdeptiCon while I am (hopefully) running demos and selling games and models at this yearly event. Please understand that this is a "can't miss" event in the miniature gaming community as far as exposure and it is here in Chicago, where I am based out of. I just want to make it clear that if this eventuality happens, it is by no means meant to be a snub to the Backers. My hope is that you will all understand that to succeed long term, we will need to take advantage of these opportunities for exposure and promotion. I won't be running all over the world promoting the game and selling copies while you are waiting for yours, but if you hear "they were selling copies at AdeptiCon", remember this caveat.
As far as risks go, they are minimal. There are no plans to change formats or miniature materials if we greatly exceed our goals, so going into this the costs are calculated and planned for. Additionally, I have had the luxury of having friends from two other Chicago game start ups to guide me through what has worked for them and what hasn't, giving this project a leg up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
