Hot Lunch is an all-ages manga-style graphic novel about a ragtag crew of thieves who set out on a mission to bring down a shadowy cabal of restaurant owners. The goal of this Kickstarter is to raise the funds needed to produce new artwork and print the finished 124-page graphic novel.
We've already run two successful comic crowdfunding campaigns and are excited to have your support for the latest mayamada story!
If you're reading this, it's a safe bet you already know comics and manga are great fun to read. But did you know they are also great for education?
It's true, they're a really cool way of providing a foundation for learning other kinds of skills such as writing, team working, craft making and even public speaking.
That's why this campaign is more than just a book to us. It represents our belief in the power of comics and manga to keep people engaged in reading. We work with young people and are constantly blown away whenever we see their imaginations ignited by comics.
Ok ok comics are great, we get it. So what is this particular story about we hear you ask...
Hot Lunch follows Taishi, an aspiring chef forced into making a dramatic career change to master thief. Framed for a crime he didn't commit, he sets out to bring down the cabal known as the Circle of Flavour (the dastardly ones who framed him) and protect his friends.
Think the noble intent of Robin Hood meets the charm of a daring Ocean’s Eleven caper.
We know not all manga is age appropriate, so if you're wondering whether this manga is suitable for younger readers, the answer is a resounding "yes!".
The Hot Lunch Vol.1 story does NOT contain swearing, gory violence or overtly mature themes.
This is not to say adults won't enjoy the story too, because “all-ages” doesn’t just mean “for kids”. Don't just take our word for it, have a look for yourself...
Who will LOVE Hot Lunch?
- Fans of manga looking for cool new stories.
- Fans of heist stories like Thief of Thieves, Ocean's Eleven and Lupin III.
- People looking for an accessible way into manga (this can be your gateway book).
- Parents, teachers or guardians looking for suitable stories to engage young readers with.
- Furries and fans of anthropomorphic comics like BlackSad.

We think you'll find the Hot Lunch preview to be an intriguing intro to Taishi's story, and trust us...it only gets better from here! (if we do say so ourselves)
Allow us to introduce you to some of the key characters in the Hot lunch story...
Taishi: The main protagonist of the Hot Lunch story who unexpectedly finds himself at the centre of a Circle of Flavour conspiracy to frame him. But they picked the wrong tiger to mess with!
Caesar: The de facto leader of the Circle of Flavour and he has the army suit to prove it! As his scar clearly shows, Caesar is one bad cat! Willing to go to any length to keep his grip on power.
Fiona: A talented straight shooter and someone who would never, ever break the rules. Ever. We thought about giving her the nickname "Miss Goody Two Shoes" but that's just mean.
Saske: The self-proclaimed Big Dog...er, pig...in the Hot Lunch story. Where Fiona keeps her talents to herself, Saske will make sure everyone knows how great she is. Taishi is her only real rival and she doesn't miss an opportunity to rub her victories in his face.
Hot Lunch Vol.1 will also introduce some new faces...
Tancho: As smart as he is narcissistic. Tancho is the bored kid in a class that isn't giving him enough of a challenge, so sarcasm is the only option to keep things interesting. But once he meets Taishi he'll soon get his wish for bigger and better challenges.
Bruce: The guy who knows a guy. Bruce has forgotten more about heists than most will know. He left the life of crime behind to find inner peace, but can be persuaded to return for the right offer?
Real-life people have also been turned into characters in the story...
Danii: A special effects make-up artist and the first person to ever cosplay a mayamada character! She is now a member of Taishi's crew, bringing her costume and make up talents to his mission to bring down the Circle of Flavour. Not much is know about her but the other characters will soon become acquainted with her varied skill set.
Cyrille: One of our biggest supporters who we first met at France's Japan Expo. Luckily his Engish was better than our French and we had a great conversation! We were so happy to be able to turn him into a character who plays a key role in the story as the owner of the Bamboo restaurant, Taishi's adopted family and main motivation in the first volume of Hot Lunch.
You can make a cameo appearance too! Check out the rewards for more information ------->
The story has been written...We just need to get the artwork done and print it so we can deliver it to YOU!
Nigel + Lao: Co-founder and writers at mayamada. We created this universe of characters and between us, we write all the stories to come out of it. Little known fact...we're both engineering graduates who loved creating stories.
Over the past years, we've learned to turn our passion for storytelling into a self-publishing manga brand. We've been so grateful to our fans and new people we've met while showcasing our stories at conventions and events across the UK, in Europe and the United States!
Pinali: We've been working with Pinali from the very first release. She has illustrated every mayamada print release from Samurai Chef to Serious and everything in between. One of the first comments we usually get at conventions is how great the artwork looks and Pinali will bring the Hot Lunch story and characters to life with more amazing visuals. We can't wait to see them!
Lara-Lee: A close friend who has been supporting the mayamada brand since its early days. Whether it's meeting new fans at conventions, directing several photoshoots or advising on copyright and trademark issues, she generally provides a much needed dose of common sense thinking in our efforts to build this universe. She is also a great editor and has been reading Hot Lunch since the first draft, providing valuable feedback. The story wouldn't read as well without her.
We have successfully delivered on two crowdfunding campaign to 127 backers and have gone on to sell over 2000 copies of our books. With your support, we will deliver Hot Lunch Vol.1 to readers worldwide.

Risks and challenges
The support of backers on Kickstarter is vital to the success of mayamada and Hot Lunch, so your trust is very important to us.
As with any creative project, there is a chance of delay before finishing the final product. The date of delivery of all backer rewards is an estimated date that is dependant on the progress of artwork and printing.
We've relied on the invaluable experience from the many creators in our network who’ve run successful crowdfuding campaigns themselves. On top of that, we have years of experience managing creative projects and dealing with the ins and outs of production, printing, and distribution.
We've been publishing manga for over five years and have a long track record of delivering. We also have a strong relationship with a quality printer who has done great work for us in the past and prints for several creators across the UK.
So we invite you to back with confidence, as we want to be entertaining you for years to come. We'll make sure we keep all backers updated on the progress of this project and any delays as they arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
