About

Our Story

A small team of students and locals are dismantling, moving, and re-assembling a hay barn in order to preserve it and use it as a studio space.

Mūsų tikslas yra išardyt, perkelt ir vėl sustayt kaimo kluoną, su vietiniais gyventojiais, meno ir architektūros sričių studentais ir kitais.

Barn 2 B is a barn that will become, a reconstructed version standing some 350 m northeast of where it is now, set in seasonal charitable design school in Lithuania. Modular in style we will sustainably reuse the materials from its previous existence. Over the past 150 years, the wood has played a part in very possibly 3 other versions of similarly constructed vernacular buildings, lying in wait for this moment of transformation in the hardy landscape of Tauragnu Region.

As time passes comes greater urgency to give it a new life. The roof is failing and warping, but the rest of the timbers are ok. Any more winters will deteriorate the material further for it to become useful – so this summer is its last chance. Wet timber isn’t always good, especially 100 years cut. We are seeking generous funding to dismantle, move, and re-assemble this hay barn (kluonas in lithuanian).

Who we are

The LT Ranch is a collective place engaging with analogue making and observing, filming and playing alongside various scientific research processes to document and experiment spatial making and imagining, being and inhabiting over a seasonal cycle. It is multi-lingual in drawing and language, slow and fast.

In 2012 LT Ranch received a research award to invite ScanLAB projects Ltd UK, to come and 3d Lidar scan the barn as a survey of the building in its context. This document and its contents was developed as an archive to help bring this barn out of its remote site, handheld and containing infra-ordinary detail to the wider public. This document not only contains 3d visualisations but also the architectural detail in 4d, that is a prototype to forensically study the barn, its joints, props and adjustments, both natural movement and hand crafted details.

What has been done until now

We have completed now Phase 1: the preparation of the future site, a former site of a similar barn on the Ranch site some 350m NE. Clearing the area of trees, shrubs and remains of the former barn, (carefully dis-mantled and stored in 2009 with artists from Holland and the UK) carefully removing the foundation stones, and setting the new barn over the corner of the old barn. We have a small team of students and local support booked to come and help move this barn from the 28th July. We have 4 weeks for this live project sequence. We all need to return to our respective jobs, studies, families and city occupations, but our main concern is the urgency of this barn, to dis-mantle, move, and reassemble with a new roof before another storm or wind dis-mantles this barn further and we don’t have a chance to re-use this historical space in a thoughtful way.

And that's where you come in!

The contributions through this fundraising campaign will help offset costs for the program such as hire of foundation drilling equipment, concrete mixer, scaffolding and cherry pickers. Also, food and subsistence for all those who have made the journey to site and help with this endeavour. Your donation is vital for saving the barn, as some replacement timbers will be needed, as well as the whole (400m2) shingled roof. We have sourced a local shingle maker who will supply the materials, when we thought no one was able to still manufacture them.

Our film for this campaign is a compiled from the collective LT Ranch archive. Mixing Super8 footage with sequences of variable 'time' and quality: slow sequences while in this rural environment, temporal, and city time: quick and sometimes stroboscopic plus an outtake for anyone who gets to the very end from Phase 1 preparation work this past June at the very end. Hope it all makes sense. It‘s a story with a lot to say!

Thank you very much in advance,

Kristina Kotov & the Barn 2 b team

More about us

The barn timbers have already been labeled with individual numbers to re-assemble it in the order that we dis-mantle, fragments of this process appear in this short film produced by ScanLAB Ltd. (click text to access link)

The archive APP is the 3d infra-ordinary scanned survey and archival & bilingual document completed in 2013 in Nov 2012, shortlisted for the CG Architect award 'Interactive' category.

The Barn 2 b project blog is here which we hope to update when there is internet connection at the project site.

Risks and challenges

The weather is our main risk. It has rained this summer more than expected, and the ground of the site is a natural clay body, that holds water like a bucket. We are preparing cover, for when the barn's roof is removed and the interior exposed, as 100+ year old cut wood should not be wet for long. We have 4 weeks as we don't have anywhere to store the timber pieces safely, though large tarpaulin sheets are on hand during intermittent showers.
We have programmed delays of hiring and delivering forklifts and other mechanical equipment, replacement timber pieces prepared and delivered on time, briefing new activists/students to the project as they arrive over the 4 weeks, our duty of care to keep everyone safe on this live site, while retaining an excellent sense of humour with home-cooked food, and beverages at the end of the day around a campfire.
