About

Based on true events, UNSOUND chronicles a mother’s battle with schizophrenia and a son’s struggle to get her the help she needs.

UNSOUND is inspired by events in my life. For many years, my mother has lived with schizophrenia, which has led to some very dark chapters in our family’s story. Today, she is unable to live on her own and requires constant care and support. As a result, I've had to step up to assume responsibility as both her full-time caretaker and her advocate in the complex (and often arcane) process of accessing the mental health services she needs. Our initial cohabitation was extremely turbulent, but she now lives with me and things have gotten much better. Our relationship has been tested almost to a breaking point numerous times, and I feel that by sharing our experience it may help others who are going through something similar. In my view, living with mental illness has not been accurately represented by the entertainment industry. I wanted to tell a story that reflects the realities of caring for someone with mental illness.

At first my mother wasn't wild about the idea of my making this film — she thought I’d be “airing our dirty laundry.” But once I completed the short film and she saw it, she understood our story’s potential to help others and inspire conversation. Watching our history play out on the screen has enabled her to deal with the past and cope with the losses she has suffered.

THE PROJECT

UNSOUND was undertaken almost three years ago as a labor of love. The first draft of the screenplay was penned in December 2010 -- seven revisions later, principal photography began in June 2012. In the spring of 2013, we held a focus-group screening, several feedback screenings, and an official test screening. The audience response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Based in part on feedback from these initial screenings, we completed reshoots and pick-ups and completed editing in July 2013. We have started the film-festival submission process and are currently submitting our final edit, which is a work-in-progress cut. This cut is adequate for submission purposes, but it requires some additional post-production work to prepare it for screening in theatrical venues.

We are seeking to raise $15,000 to complete this additional post-production work and to market the film on the film festival circuit.

The feature-length film UNSOUND was written before we shot the short film Seafood Tester, and the two films share the same cast and crew. The intent was to shoot Seafood Tester as a short film that could stand alone as a completed work but also serve to promote the feature. Seafood Tester was well received on the film festival circuit. It screened at the Hollywood Black Film Festival, San Diego Black Film Festival, The Atlantic Film Festival and the Oscar-qualifying Aspen Shortsfest.

Risks and challenges

Our project has completed production, meaning we have finished shooting (it’s “in the can”) and editing. A lion’s share of the risk is already behind us.

Submission to film festivals does not guarantee acceptance, and though we may be accepted into many film festivals, we may also see rejections as well.

As with any independently made film, distribution is not a guarantee. Although we are confident we can secure distribution and are taking every step to ensure that this happens, there is the possibility that securing a distribution deal may take longer than expected or not happen at all. In such a case, we would self-distribute.
