About this project
Making Things Special is a book about creating standout user experiences. The authors, Hillel Cooperman and Jenny Lam (us), have been designing user experiences collectively for over 25 years. Six years ago we founded Jackson Fish Market, a small software design consultancy in Seattle, Washington. We've worked with clients like Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo, as well as several small to mid-size startups and tech companies. Clients come to us when they want to create an experience that's not just intuitive, not just usable, but something that their audience can fall in love with.
Software is the canvas with which countless experiences are being created every day. And the number is only increasing. As more surfaces become interactive, more software will be created to run on those surfaces. And making something that not only gets the job done, but connects with an audience on an emotional level is a challenge. The book is called Making Things Special. It's a collection of essays and illustrations that give lessons and inspiration on the art of creating standout user experiences. The book is divided into three sections. The first covers the history and context of creating user experiences today. The second covers the role of the user experience designer. The third gets down to brass tacks in terms of techniques and specifics on creating the user experiences themselves.
While the book will certainly be a useful tool for designers, we believe that the ideas and examples are important for anyone fighting to make a great experience including technologists, marketers, and business folks. We think there are even broad lessons for those creating user experiences in other mediums. We're thrilled to be on Kickstarter which is a special experience in itself. The funds we're trying to raise will help us ensure the book has high quality illustrations throughout, as well as getting top editing talent to make sure that the book is coherent, cohesive, and flows. Thanks so much for your interest in our small project. We'd be thrilled to have your support. Jenny and Hillel
