- Less crowding means drier heat, less steaming, and more browning.
- If you already own our smaller AUS-ION pans and sometimes find them near capacity, you need 35cm AUS-ION!
- If you own big cast iron pans and camp/dutch ovens, you need our lighter (and more conductive and more durable) wrought iron!
After destroying regular pans constantly, Neil Perry and his Chefs asked us to develop an indestructible flame grilling pan for his legendary Rockpool restaurants.....so we did!
Our original AUS-ION 26cm Flaming Skillets, wrought from 3mm solid Aussie iron, are legendary among chefs, bbq teams, and camp cooks for their combination of iron searing and flame taste, and their durability on open flame.
Now they're MUCH bigger and thicker, with dual handles for easier lifting. At 4mm thick, they will also be centuries more durable!
Yes, even though they were the best of their kind, we discontinued our cast iron range a couple of years ago. It was difficult to make (viably) in Australia, and our patented wrought iron pans, with their superior performance, really made our cast iron obsolete. The old cast Bigga and Deepa pans have since become almost mythic, much sought-after 2nd hand, and they are still very good. Cooks loved their design features and big capacity, but our new 35cm Bigga and Deepa pans really dwarf them. Much more capacity, and much lower weight! Wrought iron is also much more conductive, and will never crack like cast iron can.
We've dropped hints about 'Bigga' wrought iron versions of our old cast pans and Flaming Skillets for a few years now, but we had to be sure they would work so well that there would be no question they are the best of their kind in the world today, particularly as a 3 piece set with so many cooking combinations.
As a comparison, a smaller 10qt American brand cast iron camp oven with lid weighs 12.5kg. Our 10L Deepa pan with Bigga Skillet lid weighs 7.4kg (and conducts faster, and will never crack, like cast iron can).
These new AUS-ION™ 35cm pans will only be available here on Kickstarter, then direct from Solidteknics web store from July, to ensure we keep costs as low as possible for our supporters. They may never go to retailers. We also want our supporters to have direct access to the Solidteknics Team for product advice. Most of our retailers are great, but they won't have the expertise of the engineers who developed the cookware. Also, our customer service is legendary!
Like all our Kickstarter launches, if you pledge for it in this campaign you will receive a limited edition pan engraved with 'FIRST EDITION' and the date of manufacture.
Please remember: we only ever ship limited First Edition pans to backers of our Kickstarter launch campaigns, and never again. They become regular retail edition in future production runs.
For recording each generation of caretakers of your multi-century pans, we've again added 'HEIRLOOM LINE:' under the handle, so you can engrave your name and year. Every new generation can add their name, and the year they took over guardianship of the pan. Imagine the pans you've pledged for in 2019 becoming treasured family heirlooms in hundreds of years' time.....perhaps millenia.....
And, if the seasoning is well maintained, their ancient Aussie wrought iron pans will still be cooking like new.....and will still be nonstick after centuries. The ultimate in healthy, durable, sustainable, heirloom cooking!
Yes, cracking of cast iron is a bigger problem than people think: experienced cast iron cooks know they crack quite easily if dropped on a hard surface. It's always a tragedy to see heirloom family cast iron lost like that (and it often crops up on the cast iron cooking forums). It is impossible to crack our malleable wrought iron, so your descendants will need to physically wear through them to destroy them. We think that could take 1,000+ years.....
We still love cast iron in a nostalgic sense, but we've found the cooks open to innovation will generally make the switch to wrought iron and never look back. Our supporters know that we've revolutionized a whole category of cookware (wrought solid 1-piece), and believe this industry will never be the same again.....
Solidteknics AUS-ION™ Raw iron pans enable a non-toxic natural nonstick surface that you build and maintain yourself over time. Cook with fats and oils, wash carefully, and your natural nonstick will keep renewing for many lifetimes.
Don't worry: our seasoning is not some new marketing gimmick! Our wrought iron seasons exactly like cast iron (or carbon steel skillets, or woks) have for hundreds of years: build your seasoning following our instructions in Section 2 below, or use your own seasoning ritual.
This is your own natural nonstick that is non-toxic, and never wears out. This is a great source of pride for Solidteknics iron pan owners: building their own healthy and sustainable nonstick!
Remember: we're always here to help you one-on-one with any of your seasoning difficulties. We also have a Facebook Group of 4,000+ friendly members who are always keen to help anyone new to cooking on Solidteknics iron: www.facebook.com/groups/solidteknicsusers/
We're mechanical engineers, and we know the engineering behind all the other cookware brands/styles. We're quite sure our pans are the toughest.
How tough? Wrought from a single sheet of Australian iron into one seamless, indestructible piece. This malleable wrought iron won't crack like cast iron can. No rivets, welds, screws, or wobbly handles. No synthetic coatings. No toxins. No (feasible) heat limits. No clad/ply layers. No worries. So durable, all AUS-ION™ pans come with a multi-century warranty. That's a safe promise, if you know how tough this iron is. One piece that will never crack, so you would need to eventually wear through..... These new 4mm thick wrought 35cm pans will be many generations more durable.
The experts all love the way our Aussie wrought iron seasons and cooks the same as cast iron, but weighs much less. They also love the fast and even heating from our highly conductive wrought iron. Rivetless easy cleaning, and never wobbly handles. Forever-renewable natural non-toxic nonstick.
An unbeatable set of high performance features and multi-century durability, for pro chefs, home cooks, camp cooks, and pit masters!

This is now our 17th (seventeenth!) Australian launch campaign. We launched a whole new innovative cookware industry for Australia when we successfully crowdfunded our first AUS-ION™ wrought iron cookware campaign here on Kickstarter in 2015. In 2017 we launched world-first nöni™ wrought stainless steel cookware. Now Solidteknics is acclaimed by chefs and experts, selling strongly at 150+ retailers in Australia, exported to the USA, and UK.
Patent pending AUS-ION™ is the only seamless one-piece wrought iron/steel production cookware in the world. Solidteknics is also the only production cookware made in Australia. Every other brand is imported. Most are synthetic-coated, disposable, and now in our landfill...and bloodstreams...
Please tell all your friends that you’ve found the finest iron cookware available today, they're healthy and sustainable, 100% made in Australia, and these new heirloom collectible FIRST EDITION AUS-ION™ pans are only available by pledging here on Kickstarter before the campaign deadline. Please share and spread the good Aussie iron news on social media to help us make history, not just just the world's best cookware!
Thank you and Happy Cooking!!

Most cookware cooks okay, and there are many others that are 1-piece (cast iron), and non-toxic (ceramic, glass). But our standards are higher. Apart from world-leading conductivity and cooking performance, for all our products we insist on: healthy (non-toxic), sustainable (multi-century durable), innovative patented world-first, competitive pricing, ethical, and local.
Yes, we have something to sell, but we are also mechanical engineers with over two decades developing equipment for chefs, and our vision isn’t motivated by money. Here’s a brief summary of our decades of research:
- Ceramic/stone-coated pans might not be toxic (if you can trust the source), but they are disposable, rapidly.
- Most stainless steel is austenitic Nickel stainless, and leaches that Nickel into food. Regular Nickel stainless is also such a poor conductor that it needs to be clad with aluminium/copper in an energy-intensive process, then a handle rivetted/welded on. Those clad materials are non-recyclable.
- Solid glass/ceramic is great for health (if a trusted brand), but a terrible conductor (its an insulator).
- Synthetic nonsticks should NEVER be heated in contact with food (and that is the point with cookware!), nor manufactured in the first place. Also be very careful of marketing spin on ‘new’ synthetic nonsticks: they keep inventing new trademarks and exotic additives (diamond, titanium) to mask the similar base chemistry to the original disgraced brand.
Here's our very clear position on synthetic coatings and other cookware materials, with links to the real, independent (unsponsored, nothing to gain), experts: https://bit.ly/2vYssHD .
In composition, our iron is very similar to traditional cast iron pans, but our AUS-ION™ design is formed from a single flat wrought sheet of iron in a new patented process, and not by the old method of casting molten iron into a sand mold. Our very pure wrought iron is a better conductor of heat, providing faster and more even heat distribution.
Our 3mm wrought iron skillets are about half the thickness and therefore half the weight of cast iron, so it's far easier to handle as a daily 'workhorse' skillet. If you're struggling with the weight of your cast iron but want to keep all the seasoning and cooking benefits, you need our 3mm half-weight wrought iron! If you want the ultimate in durability and perfect conductivity, you need our new 4mm skillets!
Wrought iron is also tougher and will never crack from impact or thermal shock like cast iron can (we show impact cracking in our video because more cast iron pans are lost in accidental kitchen tumbles than some people think, and it's a tragedy when old family heirlooms shatter on the floor). Being wrought in one piece of very tough material, our pans will clearly last many generations, and will never disappoint your descendants!
Our dual 'love handles' are designed for easy handling of big loads. Yes, they're shaped like hearts, and that shape means a lot to us. No, we won't change the design ;-)
We've also included a pouring rim around the entire pan to avoid messy drips down the pan sides. No need for pouring spouts!
There has been a huge shift among cooks to healthier and more sustainable cookware in recent years, due to the very real concerns about toxic, disposable, synthetic-coated nonstick pans. If you're not up to date with the warnings from independant scientists, please see:
In the last 10 years many cooks rediscovered the advantages of traditional old cast iron skillets. Many are now tired of their disadvantages, including heavy weight and slow heating (and occasional cracking).
Made from clean, heavy metal-free Australian iron, you can cook on our healthy pans with confidence, for the many generations they will endure. Pair that non-toxic iron with natural non-toxic seasoning that you maintain yourself, indefinitely, and you have the most durable and sustainable pans we know.
Thanks to extensive research and development in Australia, the securing of several patents, and receiving lots of love from cooks worldwide along the way, we have now also taken our manufacturing to the USA, with 4 successful Kickstarters to date, so we can manufacture locally for our big base of American supporters. We have launched on Kickstarter 15 successful Australian campaigns (and enjoyed great retail and export success) for our innovative, patented, chef-acclaimed, Australian-made Solidteknics cookware.
Unusual (we think we're the first), but true: we are offering a multi-century warranty for all our indestructible, 1-piece wrought cookware, including AUS-ION™.
This is not a marketing gimmick. We're not marketeers, we're engineers.....and this is solid engineering.
Our XHD Skillet is made from one seamless 4mm wrought monobloc of very tough wrought iron, and this material won't crack like cast iron. There are no synthetic coatings or enamel, and no rivets, welds, seams or clad layers to eventually fail. It would be clear to any experienced engineer that there is far more than one century of life in AUS-ION™ cookware, and quite possibly millenia.....
Our multi-century warranty applies whether used in the home, restaurant, or campfire...AUS-ION™ is basically indestructible!
We want our supporters to buy our cookware only once, and hand them down for multiple generations as treasured heirlooms. That's why we stamp the date of manufacture on every pan. We are immensely proud of the acclaim for our products, and all our sales success, but our greatest source of pride is the parents and grandparents already planning to hand down our pans as family heirloom history....
In Australia we switched from a smooth surface to a shot-peened surface in 2015, but our US importer has been selling both: the orginal smooth Aussie pans have remained more popular with USA cooks. It's also a lot less expensive to produce, so we're continuing with smooth for our Chicago-made wrought iron pans.
Just like those USA pans, in Australia we're shipping AUS-ION™ Raw with no shot peening or seasoning, just coated in natural beeswax to protect from rust in transit.
Note: French steel chef pans have long used beeswax to protect from rust. It's natural and non-toxic. We'll leave the seasoning for you to use your favorite method (like any cast iron or steel pan), or follow our instructions below.
AUS-ION™ pans are ready to start seasoning yourself in the normal way: the same as any bare cast iron pan, French steel pan, or carbon steel wok, if you have experience seasoning those.
If you don't know how to build your own seasoning, see our intro video below for 'best practice', and our instructions here www.solidteknics.com/ironcare or the many different seasoning guides all over the internet.
Note that our video method is extreme 'best practise' for our pans, and not compulsory. For example, scuffing all over makes a much more even result on smooth pans (anchors seasoning better), and 3 oven seasons make a more rust-resistant pan all over. If you have the patience, you will be rewarded with beautiful seasoning more quickly. If not, you will still get there with any seasoning method!
More background history:
A passion for sustainable business:
Why does Solidteknics seem different to the average business?
Some clues are in this video.....
.....and the essence of our difference is in our original vision statement: www.solidteknics.com
A passion for good food:
Horses for courses.....
We still prefer the natural nonstick of seasoned iron for high temp oil/fat-based frying, grilling, etc, but.....
Skillets in stainless are also easier to maintain, and faster to clean if you're in a hurry.
Trade-off: they'll never be as nonstick as seasoned iron, so every kitchen needs both kinds.
Pictured above are our nöni™ seamless ferritic stainless pans, made in the same way (same patents) as our AUS-ION™ wrought iron. These nöni™ pans are not available in this Kickstarter, but all are on our Solid web store: http://www.solidteknics.com/shop/

Risks and challenges
After a long and intensive development period, 16 (sixteen!) successful Kickstarter campaigns in Australia, four in the USA, overwhelmingly positive feedback from top chefs, strong retail sales and exports, and many production runs, SOLIDteknics is rapidly becoming established as a major chef equipment brand.
Though undeniably very hard work to launch a whole new range of Australian-made products into a competitive market, on the scale of products and businesses I’ve launched this is certainly at the low risk end. After decades in the chef equipment industry and a long R&D process, I’m very confident the product is the best it can be - in fact, the best in the world - for all the reasons presented in the project detail.
If our backers allow us reach our target in time, the funds will be quickly applied to the tooling and production costs and we will ship on time (barring 'acts of God'!), as promised. We have a long and proven track record of keeping our promises, and fixing any unexpected issues quickly and thoroughly, with mutual respect.
Apart from all the engineering experience, it is our amazing strong base of passionate supporters who really ensures our success with each campaign (then ongoing retail and export success). We couldn't do it without YOU, and we are very grateful for all your support. Thank you all!
