We already make two AUS-ION™ wrought iron pans in 4mm Australian iron: our 24cm Crêpe/Griddle pan, and our 35cm dual-handle Bigga Skillet. Everyone who has cooked on them loves how quickly and evenly they spread the heat, how perfectly they sear steaks, roast veggies, and make a beautiful brown crust on baked goods.

A lid that is also a high performance flat skillet in its own right. Very even heat from our 4mm wrought iron, for perfect crêpes, searing meat, roasting veggies, and so much bigger than our legendary 4mm thick 24cm Crêpe/Griddle pan!

If you already own our AUS-ION™ 30cm Skillet or 35cm Bigga Skillet, our new 31cm XHD eXtra Heavy Duty Skillet will feel like the perfect marriage of both. Get the perfect heating of the 4mm Bigga Skillet with less footprint, to match your burner sizes more closely, and higher walls and more even heating than our 30cm Skillet. That skillet is legendary for its conductivity, but 3mm solid wrought iron isn't quite in the same league as 4mm solid wrought iron...

If you already own our AUS-ION™ 24cm Crepe/griddle pan, you will have the same perfectly even heating, with much more surface area, plus walls to catch the spatter.

This new  AUS-ION™ 31cm XHD Skillet will only be available here on Kickstarter, then direct from Solidteknics web store from May, to ensure we keep costs as low as possible for our supporters. They may never go to retailers. We also want our supporters to have direct access to the Solidteknics Team for product advice. Most of our retailers are great, but they won't have the expertise of the engineers who developed the cookware. Also, our customer service is legendary!

Like all our Kickstarter launches, if you pledge for it in this campaign you will receive a limited edition 31cm Skillet engraved with 'FIRST EDITION' and the date of manufacture.

Please remember: we only ever ship limited First Edition pans to backers of our Kickstarter launch campaigns, and never again. They become regular retail edition in future production runs.

MJ Henry exhausted after engraving 1,000 pans last time. Now we can't get him on the engraver too often: 'oooh, the cramps'! So these initialled pans will be rare collectibles indeed!
MJ Henry exhausted after engraving 1,000 pans last time. Now we can't get him on the engraver too often: 'oooh, the cramps'! So these initialled pans will be rare collectibles indeed!

Aussies have solved all those issues in one patented machine-wrought iron pan.

Yes, cracking of cast iron is a bigger problem than people think: experienced cast iron cooks know they crack quite easily if dropped on a hard surface. It's always a tragedy to see heirloom family cast iron lost like that (and it often crops up on the cast iron cooking forums). It is impossible to crack our malleable wrought iron, so your descendants will need to physically wear through them to destroy them. We think that could take 1,000+ years.....

We still love cast iron in a nostalgic sense, but we've found the cooks open to innovation will generally make the switch to wrought iron and never look back. Our supporters know that we've revolutionized a whole category of cookware (wrought solid 1-piece), and believe this industry will never be the same again.....

For recording each generation of caretakers of your multi-century pans, we've again added 'HEIRLOOM LINE:' under the handle, so you can engrave your name and year. Every new generation can add their name, and the year they took over guardianship of the pan. Imagine the pans you've pledged for in 2019 becoming treasured family heirlooms in hundreds of years' time.....perhaps millenia.....

And, if the seasoning is well maintained, their ancient Aussie wrought iron pans will still be cooking like new.....and will still be nonstick after centuries. The ultimate in healthy, durable, sustainable, heirloom cooking!

Solidteknics AUS-IONRaw iron pans enable a non-toxic natural nonstick surface that you build and maintain yourself over time. Cook with fats and oils, wash carefully, and your natural nonstick will keep renewing for many lifetimes.

Don't worry: our seasoning is not some new marketing gimmick! Our wrought iron seasons exactly like cast iron (or carbon steel skillets, or woks) have for hundreds of years: build your seasoning following our instructions in Section 2 below, or use your own seasoning ritual.

This is your own natural nonstick that is non-toxic, and never wears out. This is a great source of pride for Solidteknics iron pan owners: building their own healthy and sustainable nonstick!

Remember: we're always here to help you one-on-one with any of your seasoning difficulties. We also have a Facebook Group of 4,000+ friendly members who are always keen to help anyone new to cooking on Solidteknics iron: www.facebook.com/groups/solidteknicsusers/

We're mechanical engineers, and we know the engineering behind all the other cookware brands/styles. We're quite sure our pans are the toughest.

How tough? Wrought from a single sheet of Australian iron into one seamless, indestructible piece. This malleable wrought iron won't crack like cast iron can.    No rivets, welds, screws, or wobbly handles.  No synthetic coatings. No toxins. No (feasible) heat limits. No clad/ply layers. No worries. So durable, all AUS-ION™ pans come with a multi-century warranty. That's a safe promise, if you know how tough this iron is. One piece that will never crack, so you would need to eventually wear through..... This new 4mm wrought 31cm Skillet will be many generations more durable.

After destroying regular pans constantly, Neil Perry and his Chefs asked us to develop an indestructible flame grilling pan for his legendary Rockpool restaurants.....so we did!

The experts all love the way our Aussie wrought iron seasons and cooks the same as cast iron, but weighs much less. They also love the fast and even heating from our highly conductive wrought iron. Rivetless easy cleaning, and never wobbly handles. Forever-renewable natural non-toxic nonstick.

An unbeatable set of high performance features and multi-century durability, for pro chefs, home cooks, camp cooks, and pit masters!

Note that we never 'plant' reviews. All are written by unsponsored chefs, food media, experts, and home cooks who understand the significance of this revolution in seamless, healthy, sustainable, multi-generation wrought 1-piece cookware.)

Bigger capacity than our 30cm Skillet, but same length, so also fits in most standadrd 60cm ovens.....diagonally!

This is now our 16th (sixteenth!) Australian launch campaign. We launched a whole new innovative cookware industry for Australia when we successfully crowdfunded our first AUS-ION™ wrought iron cookware campaign here on Kickstarter in 2015. In 2017 we launched world-first nöni™ wrought stainless steel cookware. Now Solidteknics is acclaimed by chefs and experts, selling strongly at 100+ retailers in Australia, exported to the USA, and UK.

Patent pending AUS-ION™ is the only seamless one-piece wrought iron/steel production cookware in the world. Solidteknics is also the only production cookware made in Australia. Every other brand is imported. Most are synthetic-coated, disposable, and now in our landfill...and bloodstreams...

Please tell all your friends that you’ve found the finest iron cookware available today, they're healthy and sustainable, 100% made in Australia, and these new heirloom collectible FIRST EDITION AUS-ION™ pans are only available by pledging here on Kickstarter before the campaign deadline on Feb 10.  Please share and spread the good Aussie iron news on social media to help us make history, not just just the world's best cookware!

Thank you and Happy Cooking!!

FAQ: WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER COOKWARE CHOICES OUT THERE? WHY SOLIDTEKNICS?

Most cookware cooks okay, and there are many others that are 1-piece (cast iron), and non-toxic (ceramic, glass). But our standards are higher. Apart from world-leading conductivity and cooking performance, for all our products we insist on: healthy (non-toxic), sustainable (multi-century durable), innovative patented world-first, competitive pricing, ethical, and local.

Yes, we have something to sell, but we are also mechanical engineers with over two decades developing equipment for chefs, and our vision isn’t motivated by money. Here’s a brief summary of our decades of research:

  • Ceramic/stone-coated pans might not be toxic (if you can trust the source), but they are disposable, rapidly.
  • Most stainless steel is austenitic Nickel stainless, and leaches that Nickel into food.  Regular Nickel stainless is also such a poor conductor that it needs to be clad with aluminium/copper in an energy-intensive process, then a handle rivetted/welded on. Those clad materials are non-recyclable.
  • Solid glass/ceramic is great for health (if a trusted brand), but a terrible conductor (its an insulator).
  • Synthetic nonsticks should NEVER be heated in contact with food (and that is the point with cookware!), nor manufactured in the first place. Also be very careful of marketing spin on ‘new’ synthetic nonsticks: they keep inventing new trademarks and exotic additives (diamond, titanium) to mask the similar base chemistry to the original disgraced brand.

Here's our very clear position on synthetic coatings and other cookware materials, with links to the real, independent (unsponsored, nothing to gain), experts: https://bit.ly/2vYssHD .

In composition, our iron is very similar to traditional cast iron pans, but our AUS-ION™ design is formed from a single flat wrought sheet of iron in a new patented process, and not by the old method of casting molten iron into a sand mold. Our very pure wrought iron is a better conductor of heat, providing faster and more even heat distribution.

Our 3mm wrought iron skillets are about half the thickness and therefore half the weight of cast iron, so it's far easier to handle as a daily 'workhorse' skillet. If you're struggling with the weight of your cast iron but want to keep all the seasoning and cooking benefits, you need our 3mm half-weight wrought iron!  If you want the ultimate in durability and perfect conductivity, you need our new 4mm skillets!

Wrought iron is also tougher and will never crack from impact or thermal shock like cast iron can (we show impact cracking in our video because more cast iron pans are lost in accidental kitchen tumbles than some people think, and it's a tragedy when old family heirlooms shatter on the floor).  Being wrought in one piece of very tough material, our pans will clearly last many generations, and will never disappoint your descendants!

Our long ergonomic handles are designed for cool comfort. Based on simple thermodynamics, we added ventilation gaps to our long, easy-to-hold handle so the heat from the pan won't transfer to your hand (unlike thick, short cast iron handles).   We've also included a pouring rim around the entire pan to avoid messy drips down the pan sides. No need for pouring spouts!

There has been a huge shift among cooks to healthier and more sustainable cookware in recent years, due to the very real concerns about toxic, disposable, synthetic-coated nonstick pans.  If you're not up to date with the warnings from independant scientists, please see:

http://www.solidteknics.com/blog/dont-believe-us-about-dangers-of-nonstick-pans-weve-got-something-to-sell-believe-the-unsponsored-scientists

In the last 10 years many cooks rediscovered the advantages of traditional old cast iron skillets. Many are now tired of their disadvantages, including heavy weight and slow heating (and occasional cracking).

Made from clean, heavy metal-free Australian iron, you can cook on our healthy pans with confidence, for the many generations they will endure. Pair that non-toxic iron with natural non-toxic seasoning that you maintain yourself, indefinitely, and you have the most durable and sustainable pans we know.

Thanks to extensive research and development in Australia, the securing of several patents, and receiving lots of love from cooks worldwide along the way, we have now also taken our manufacturing to the USA, with 4 successful Kickstarters to date, so we can manufacture locally for our big base of American supporters.  We have launched on Kickstarter 15 successful Australian campaigns (and enjoyed great retail and export success) for our innovative, patented, chef-acclaimed, Australian-made Solidteknics cookware.

What an honor to be covered by the New York Times, again!
What an honor to be covered by the New York Times, again!

Unusual (we think we're the first), but true: we are offering a multi-century warranty for all our indestructible, 1-piece wrought cookware, including AUS-ION™.

This is not a marketing gimmick. We're not marketeers, we're engineers.....and this is solid engineering.

Our XHD Skillet is made from one seamless 4mm wrought monobloc of very tough wrought iron, and this material won't crack like cast iron. There are no synthetic coatings or enamel, and no rivets, welds, seams or clad layers to eventually fail. It would be clear to any experienced engineer that there is far more than one century of life in AUS-ION™ cookware, and quite possibly millenia.....

Our multi-century warranty applies whether used in the home, restaurant, or campfire...AUS-ION™ is basically indestructible!

We want our supporters to buy our cookware only once, and hand them down for multiple generations as treasured heirlooms. That's why we stamp the date of manufacture on every pan.  We are immensely proud of the acclaim for our products, and all our sales success, but our greatest source of pride is the parents and grandparents already planning to hand down our pans as family heirloom history....

In Australia we switched from a smooth surface to a shot-peened surface in 2015, but our US importer has been selling both: the orginal smooth Aussie pans have remained more popular with USA cooks. It's also a lot less expensive to produce, so we're continuing with smooth for our Chicago-made wrought iron pans.

Just like those USA pans, in Australia we're shipping AUS-ION™ Raw with no shot peening or seasoning, just coated in natural beeswax to protect from rust in transit.

Note: French steel chef pans have long used beeswax to protect from rust. It's natural and non-toxic. We'll leave the seasoning for you to use your favorite method (like any cast iron or steel pan), or follow our instructions below.

AUS-ION™ pans are ready to start seasoning yourself in the normal way: the same as any bare cast iron pan, French steel pan, or carbon steel wok, if you have experience seasoning those.

If you don't know how to build your own seasoning, see our intro video below for 'best practice', and our instructions here  www.solidteknics.com/ironcare or the many different seasoning guides all over the internet.

Note that our video method is extreme 'best practise' for our pans, and not compulsory. For example, scuffing all over makes a much more even result on smooth pans (anchors seasoning better), and 3 oven seasons make a more rust-resistant pan all over. If you have the patience, you will be rewarded with beautiful seasoning more quickly. If not, you will still get there with any seasoning method!

If you already own our BIG AUS-ION Skillets, the new XHD is very different!

A passion for engineering world-leading chef equipment

More background history:

 A passion for sustainable business:

Why does Solidteknics seem different to the average business?

Some clues are in this video.....

.....and the essence of our difference is in our original vision statement: www.solidteknics.com

A passion for good food:

Our founder and design engineer, Mark J. Henry, with decades of experience developing chef equipment in Australia, USA, France, also loves to cook (just don't call him a stiff engineer LOL!)

Horses for courses.....

We still prefer the natural nonstick of seasoned iron for high temp oil/fat-based frying, grilling, etc, but.....

Skillets in stainless are also easier to maintain, and faster to clean if you're in a hurry.

Trade-off: they'll never be as nonstick as seasoned iron, so every kitchen needs both kinds.

Pictured above are our nöni™ seamless ferritic stainless pans, made in the same way (same patents) as our AUS-ION™ wrought iron.  These nöni™ pans are not available in this Kickstarter, but all are on our Solid web store: http://www.solidteknics.com/shop/

Sure, we got the engineering right, but without so many strong supporters we would still only be 'dreamers with prototypes'!  Apart from all the Kickstarter launches, we're in 100+ Kitchenware retailers all around Australia, sold over 100,000 pans, and growing strongly.

We always say we're building this new era in healthy, sustainable, seamless wrought cookware together.

Risks and challenges

After a long and intensive development period, 15 (twelve!) successful Kickstarter campaigns in Australia, four in the USA, overwhelmingly positive feedback from top chefs, strong retail sales and exports, and many production runs, SOLIDteknics is rapidly becoming established as a major chef equipment brand.

Though undeniably very hard work to launch a whole new range of Australian-made products into a competitive market, on the scale of products and businesses I’ve launched this is certainly at the low risk end. After decades in the chef equipment industry and a long R&D process, I’m very confident the product is the best it can be - in fact, the best in the world - for all the reasons presented in the project detail.

If our backers allow us reach our target in time, the funds will be quickly applied to the tooling and production costs and we will ship on time (barring 'acts of God'!), as promised. We have a long and proven track record of keeping our promises, and fixing any unexpected issues quickly and thoroughly, with mutual respect.

Apart from all the engineering experience, it is our amazing strong base of passionate supporters who really ensures our success with each campaign (then ongoing retail and export success). We couldn't do it without YOU, and we are very grateful for all your support. Thank you all!

Long-lasting design

SOLIDteknics cookware is, we believe, the first in the world to carry a multi-century warranty. While this sounds like a marketing gimmick at first sight, any mechanical engineer would agree our pans will easily last several centuries. We're mechanical engineers with over 2 decades experience in this industry, and we believe our pans could last millenia, like some of the solid iron pans from the Roman era. Like those hand-wrought pans, ours are machine-wrought from one solid piece of material that won't ever crack, with no coatings, so they will easily outlast all the cookware made with coatings, rivets, welds, plastic handles, etc, which are the majority of pans made today. Our wrought cookware is also more durable than cast iron (which can crack if dropped on a hard surface). Wrought iron and stainless is malleable, and will never crack. The only way to destroy SOLIDteknics cookware is to physically wear through it, and that will take many centuries.

Reusability and recyclability

Our packaging is made from recycled cardboard, and our AUS-ION Satin pans are packaged in reuseable calico bags. Our pans are made from a single monobloc of recyclable material: wrought iron for our AUS-ION pans, and ferritic stainless for our nöni pans: both very easily recyclable. Most cookware made today, except cast iron, is non-recyclable. The majority are made to be disposable, with synthetic nonstick coatings. We estimate over 1.2 million nonstick pans are thrown in the Australian landfill every year (and over 12 million in the USA). Clad stainless steel cookware (the vast majority) is also not recyclable.

Sustainable materials

While our cookware materials need to come from clean virgin ores of very high purity (for food safety), they are very low impact in the sense that they contain no heavy metal impurities, and will not need recycling for hundreds of years (perhaps millenia). We believe very strongly in 'sustainability from durability', and minimising disposability in all we do. This has been very strongly articulated in the vision statement on the front page of our website, and in all our Kickstarter launches, from the beginning, because the whole company strategy is based on sustainability. We are 100% committed.

Environmentally friendly factories

We will only ever manufacture in countries where we know we can trust the factories 100%, in all aspects of manufacturing (quality control, environmental and labor protection, intellectual property protection, etc). All of our manufacturing is done in Australia (Sydney) for the Australian market, with 100% Australian iron for our AUS-ION pans (this Kickstarter), and German material for our nöni stainless steel pans. In fact, we are the only production cookware manufacturer in Australia. We also manufacture in the USA (Chicago) for the US market, using 100% USA materials. In those countries, environmental (and labor protection) laws are among the strictest in the world, and our factories are technical leaders in their sectors in those countries. All environmental regulations are strictly followed.

Sustainable fulfillment and distribution

We will continue to initiate new manufacturing in each country where our sales increase to the point that local manufacturing becomes viable. We put that long-range goal into action last year when we started manufacturing in Chicago after exporting 4 shipments of our Australian-made pans to the USA. We were always concerned about the carbon footprint of all that shipping. Our sales are increasing in the UK, so that could be our next country of manufacture, perhaps by 2020. Local manufacturing has also been a part of our vision statement from the beginning, because we know it is an important part of sustainability.

Something else

Apart from all of the above sustainable practices in cookware, we are also developing Solid 1-piece chef knives, with a matching fine sharpening system, which will enable them to last potentially for hundreds of years. (Chef knives are the main expertise of our founder/engineer.) We will continue releasing new cookware, new knives, and new kitchenware in the coming decades, as long as they fit our vision (which overrides everything), they are the first of their kind in the world, the best of their kind in the world, patented by Solidteknics, ethical, healthy and sustainable. An important aspect of sustainability for Solidteknics is human: we are only interested in doing commerce that is not only not harmful, but nurturing for our employees, our customers, our contractors.

To understand the profound importance of sustainability in everything we do, here is our vision statement (the same original vision statement which has been on the front page of our website from day one):

Solidteknics Vision

SOLIDTEKNICS is built on the premise that there are enough people like us who are tired of the
waste and damage of the disposable consumer world, and are willing to think before they buy. To take personal responsibility for their purchasing decisions, and thereby influence corporate and governmental policy by 'voting with their wallet'.

We believe in a more sustainable industry where cookware is not a disposable item, and is not coated with questionable synthetics for a little extra consumer convenience.

We only want SOLID and healthy cooking tools that are designed to be the best of their kind in the world, and made with such quality and integrity that they will last for multiple generations and centuries.

"To build not just a collection of great products and a memorable brand, but to introduce industry-changing innovation and build a truly great company which will endure for generations and contribute back to our families, our communities and our world.....contributing more profoundly than by monetary means alone".

MJ Henry, SOLIDTEKNICS founder and development engineer
