The biggest breakthrough since we invented the seamless one-piece formed-iron pan.....
Since their launch less than a year ago, our patent-pending AUS-ION™ pans have been wildly successful among chefs, experts, and savvy home cooks in Australia, and showing the same early signs in the USA. (See: http://www.solidteknics.com/blog/top-chefs-talk-about-the-new-aus-ion-australian-steel-chef-pans )
It has been a great start for Australia's new cookware industry, driven by innovation and quality in healthier, more sustainable real professional cookware. (And yes, they work perfectly on any heat source, including induction, being solid iron.)
Now we're about to change everything again.....
'Out of the Fire and into the Frying Pan'
How 'light' exactly?
Certainly heavier than disposable coated aluminum, but around half the weight of cast iron pans, depending on brand. For example, our 18cm Skillet weighs 0.8kg, 26cm Skillet weighs 1.6kg (compared with 2.4kg for our 24cm cast iron Sauteuse), and our big 30cm Skillet weighs just 2 kg. Our woks are lightest, being 2.5mm thick for rapid heating and easy saute tossing, while all our Skillets are 3mm thick for best combination of even heating/weight, and Crêpe/Griddle 4mm thick for ultimate in even heat.
Update: NEW discounted sets added August 17!
We've received a LOT of requests for different Reward combinations, given that we can't accept manual pledge/reward adjustments (too hard for our little engineering-focussed team: see FAQs).
So we've added 3 awesome new sets with bigger savings than ever.....except for our mighty FULL set of 8, still with biggest $153 saving!
So this is your chance to secure AUS-ION Satin at old smooth prices, AND in limited engraved 'First Satin Edition'. In fact, it's your last chance: they will never be offered again after this campaign closes - retailers will carry our regular retail Satin edition, at full retail price.
Secure now as many pieces as possible of Australian cookware history!
With so much chef acclaim, was there anything left to improve?
Ease of seasoning, say?
We have to admit, we thought the seasoning could be improved.....particularly to make the natural seasoning process easier for cooks who are new to this 'dark art' of iron seasoning. It's easy, once you know how, but smooth steel/iron can be a challenge, until the seasoning foundation builds up.
As a manufacturer, we could also make the surface more suitable for production seasoning, more visually consistent, more rust-proof during transport and storage for retailers, and, yes, more beautiful.
Solution: shot peening (shot blasting)!
One of the big advantages of textured cast iron over smooth steel has always been ease of seasoning. It's not easy to get the seasoning to anchor to the smooth steel pans (or some new cast iron skillet brands that are machined down to totally-smooth bare iron). With good instruction-following, a lot of pre-seasoning, and careful washing, the seasoning builds up over time, and smooth steel/iron then becomes as naturally nonstick as cast iron.....but it's just not as easily achieved as with lightly textured cast iron like our AUSfonte™ series.
With shot peening we found a way to replicate cast iron's ease of seasoning in our lighter formed-iron pans. The end result is a luxe satin finish that is pure bliss for seasoning, and for the eye.....
Because the seasoning you can build on Satin is deeper and far more strongly anchored, this makes washing the new Satin pans even easier and less 'patchy'. A real time-saver!
Shot peening is also known as shot blasting. Thousands of small steel balls are fired at the surface at extreme velocities to indent (peen) the surface without removing metal. It is not an abrasive process like sand or grit blasting.
Peening leaves a minutely hammered surface that is perfect for anchoring seasoning in the 'craters', while not being sharp enough to jag food on the 'hills'.
The 5 Ws of the campaign:
The relaunch of our entire AUS-ION™ range in Satin finish, and the addition of a big and awesome new 30cm Skillet, all offered as limited engraved 'First Satin Edition' series.
These relatively rare 'First Satin Edition' pans will only be offered right here on Kickstarter.
From now until the campaign closing deadline of August 21.
To backers of this Kickstarter campaign, from any country, who pledge in support of this new era in Australian cookware:
Cooks who already own our Solidteknics AUS-ION™ cookware: You already know how good they are. Now we're promising that the new AUS-ION™ Satin is much better again, with this surface finishing breakthrough. There's the huge new 30cm Skillet with helper handle to add to your collection, for all the big cook-ups. It's also a great chance to secure some more of the relatively rare First Edition pans, this time in new Satin series, for yourself, or for loved ones. Heirloom multi-generation gifts are always the most treasured!
- Cooks new to our particular iron cookware: AUS-ION™ is the world's only seamless one-piece rivetless steel (formed-iron) pan. See graphic further below for all the features and benefits. You can also trust what the (independent, unsponsored) experts are saying about this innovative new Australian-made cookware: http://www.solidteknics.com/blog/top-chefs-talk-about-the-new-aus-ion-australian-steel-chef-pans
- Cooks new to iron cooking: It is well known that seasoned bare iron/steel is the only natural nonstick. Relative to disposable synthetics, it is healthier, more sustainable, more durable cookware with forever-renewable natural seasoned nonstick. See expert opinion all over the web, and our summary of health benefits with links to experts here: http://www.solidteknics.com/blog/these-5-health-benefits-are-cast-in-ironand-4-more-are-literally-cast-in-iron-in-australia
Because we've worked hard in R&D and found a viable way to improve our innovative formed-iron pans: with much easier seasoning. We just had to make this upgrade! And now we need your vote of confidence, and your real support in this campaign to fund this BIG changeover.
Limited 'First Satin Edition' for Kickstarter backers only
Like all our Kickstarter campaigns, everyone who pledges toward this campaign will receive limited edition pans engraved with '1st Satin Edition', and the date of manufacture.
Like the First Edition AUS-ION™ pans before them, these historic First Satin Edition pans will be treasured by cooks in the days, decades, and centuries to come. Your descendents will be in awe of their rare heirloom pans: still cooking like new in hundreds (thousands?) of years' time. If seasoning is well maintained, your ancient pan will still be nonstick!
At Solidteknics, we're always researching, developing, testing, perfecting.....oh, and eating!!
Your pledge is important
While Solidteknics cookware has been growing rapidly at retail, and in export to the USA, we are still a small fledgling local brand compared to the big importers. Now this changeover to the Satin version of AUS-ION is essential, but very costly for a small business.
To ensure we survive this transition and keep our new Australian cookware industry alive, we really need this Kickstarter to succeed. We also need to know that our followers trust us with this new engineering development. It's a combination of finance and spirit. We want to be sure our tribe won't 'vote us off this island' if we commit to this expensive transformation!
Update 17/8/16: It seems 'the tribe has spoken', and our new Satin upagrade is very much appreciated by our followers, old and new: thank you all! Now, in these final days/hours, let's see how many new supporters we can bring into the solid Aussie iron family!
- Do they work on induction? (Yes: perfect, being solid iron! See FAQs)
- Can I plege for more than one pan or make other combinations? No. (Well, there is a way around the system, with multiple Kickstarter accounts.....see FAQs)
- Can you ship to other countries not listed? (Yes! See FAQs)
We are very grateful for your interest in our Aussie iron, but please be kind and read our FAQs at bottom before sending a direct message through your KS account. Thank you!
We launched a whole new cookware industry for Australia when we successfully crowdfunded our first AUSfonte™ cast iron cookware campaign here on Kickstarter in September 2014. That first campaign was followed by 6 more very successful campaigns (including 3 for AUS-ION™), and now Solidteknics is acclaimed by chefs and experts, selling strongly in Australia, and exported to the USA.
Patent pending AUS-ION™ is the only seamless one-piece steel production cookware in the world. Solidteknics' two ranges are the only production cookware brands made in Australia. Every other brand is imported. Most are synthetic-coated, disposable, and now in our landfill.....and bloodstreams.....
Please tell all your friends that you’ve found the finest iron cookware available today, they're healthy and sustainable, 100% made in Australia, and these new heirloom collectible FIRST SATIN EDITION AUS-ION™ pans are only available by pledging here on Kickstarter before the campaign deadline.
Please spread the good Aussie iron news to help us make history, not just cookware!
Thank you and Happy Cooking!!
Mark, Rebecca, Natasha, Lara and the Solidteknics Team
.....well, kind of.....
All the detail you probably want was presented above. However, if this is your first time pledging on Kickstarter, or first experience with Solidteknics, please read on for valuable extra background info on both.
We want everyone to be clear and supportive of our vision, and this new method of kickstarting an expensive new venture with crowdfunding.....followed hopefully by more retail and export success, and generations of love for this new Australian brand.

We don't sell direct, so to find our retail stores and online partners in Australia and the USA, see: http://www.solidteknics.com/where-to-buy/
Remember, all our cookware at retail/online is regular retail edition, not First Edition, which are only specially made for backers of our Kickstarter campaigns. If you miss the campaign, you miss the First Edition series. Sorry, no exceptions.
What do the experts say about AUS-ION™?
There's a rapidly building chorus of support for our new Australian cookware among the best Chefs and iron cooking experts who've discovered all the benefits of our innovative AUS-ION cookware.

A new era for restaurant cookware
Aussie cookware acclaim in the USA
Here's a great video review by Jeff Rogers, The Culinary Fanatic in the USA. He is a real iron cooking expert, and yes, this review was free and unsponsored, like all the reviews and comments we share!

Meet the guy
Why do we so strongly believe that AUS-ION™ pans are the best chef pans in the world today?
Here's our graphic explanation again:
Makes sense, right, so why isn't everyone else doing it?
We know from long engineering experience that it is NOT easy to make a seamless one-piece pan from a single iron/steel sheet. While it could be forged by hand (like the artisans), or fully formed through automation, the investment is so prohibitively high in traditional die tooling and/or labour expense that the final high purchase price would be out of reach for most cooks, and certainly not economical for restaurants.
After decades of wanting this, we found a way to make the processing economically viable by combining the best of modern flexible manufacturing, die production techniques, and good old-fashioned artisanal skill.
Artisanal and innovative, great.....but what technologies, exactly?
Sorry, but we can't reveal the details of each step we take to form the final AUS-ION™ pans from a single sheet of iron, particularly at this early stage. All we will say is we combine 3 key manufacturing methods to arrive at a seamless one-piece pan, and nobody else does.....otherwise they would already exist, because this is so clearly better than rivets, screws, or welds.
We know our competitors are watching with great interest (BIG 'old school' importer/distributor/marketeers). We're also operating under patents pending* for certain aspects of our innovations. To find out which aspects, competitors will need to wait for the full patents to be published......
Then there's the regular offshore copycats we'd like to avoid 'gifting' our trade secrets to at this point.....though it's only a matter of time until they reverse-engineer our pans and beat us on price with cheaper labour and inferior materials. You know the drill..... We'd like to delay having to sue the importers of those copies for as long as possible (it's impossible to sue those offshore factories, so we go after the importers in our markets). We're also hoping the importers with integrity will refuse offers of the (almost inevitable) offshore copies of our pioneering Australian-made, Australian-designed, Australian-patented innovations.
We'll all soon see if greed or ethics wins out.....!
Kickstarter is crowdfunding: it is NOT online retail......
Please remember that Solidteknics is a development engineering company, working hard at pioneering a new cookware industry for Australia. We are not an importer, and not a retailer waiting with a warehouse full of generic imports to quickly fill your order. This is much more difficult.
We are well known for reliable delivery after 7 successful Kickstarter campaigns, but there may still be the risk of delayed fulfillment if we encounter unforseen manufacturing challenges. If that is a problem you may prefer our big online retailers will have better service and often better shipping rates. Our kitchenware stores will have friendly service and no shipping costs if you walk in. They won't have the limited First Satin Edition series though: those are only for Kickstarter backers who have the faith and patience to support our pioneering new product launches and make them viable through crowdfunding here.
If you know us, you will know that we are more interested in solid long-term supporters, not short-term sales figures.
Kickstarter quirks and our SOLIDteknics 'house rules'
The Kickstarter system can be 'quirky' for first-timers. So please first familiarise yourself with the overall Kickstarter method here: https://www.kickstarter.com/hello
It is Kickstarter's system, and we can't change pledges, and nor can we take new orders after the campaign closes. You also really need to read the Kickstarter Updates we send, please. You also must respond to the Kickstarter Survey sent after the campaign closes. It's vital: this is the only time we receive shipping details to deliver your rewards (because we don't see your billing information: only Kickstarter does).
Got specific issues during the campaign?
If you have any problems not related to the separate Kickstarter system please direct message us through Kickstarter, or email us direct: info at solidteknics dot com .....please do not run first to post publicly on social media, before giving us a chance to resolve your problem.
That really is needlessly damaging to our fragile little brand, and just.....uncool. We will occasionally make human errors, sure, but you can be certain of our integrity, and you can be certain of our goodwill toward all our backers. We hope the respect will be mutual.
Note: If you do publicly post a troll-like rant designed to damage our reputation, without first giving us the chance to fix your problem in private, your pledge will be immediately cancelled and you will be refunded. We are not interested in taking money from trolls or haters. This is community, not sales. Two very different things.
If you know us, and the massive commitment and investment needed to get to this point, you would know we are not here to make fast money with Kickstarter, or the Solidteknics business itself: we are carefully and patiently building a multi-generation brand based on Australian-made cookware innovations of multi-century durability. It's about as opposite as you can get to a fast-buck profit-driven import/retail enterprise.....
Now that our ground rules and expectations for reciprocal respect are clear, we very much look forward to many years of making more like-minded friends who are lovers of great food and great Australian-made, sustainable, healthy, competitive, innovative cook's equipment.
Thank you for sharing our Australian cookware vision!
AUSfonte cast iron Adelaide foundry action
Our AUS-ION seamless one-piece steel Sydney manfucturing is secret, but our AUSfonte cast iron manufacturing in Adelaide isn't. This is absolutely world-class automation, followed by a lot of hard artisinal finishing. Our BIGskillets and DEEPans only fit 2 per mould, but our 16cm Skillets fit 6 per mould. That's 6 pans poured every 8 seconds. That's 2,160 per hour! Amazing to see it in action!
For more details on the differences between our AUSfonte cast iron and AUS-ION formed-iron (low carbon mild steel), see our Solid Products page here: http://www.solidteknics.com/solid-products2/
More video testimonials from the experts
Like all our reviews, testimonials and social media comments, none are sponsored and all are independent opinion, or raw enthusiasm for something new and exceptional.....
Another perspective on the AUS-ION benefits, for Chefs
HUGE THANKS TO ALL OUR CHEFS, EMPLOYEES, SUPPORTERS!
We simply wouldn't be here, launching our 8th Kickstarter campaign, and manufacturing like crazy for booming retail sales and export, if it wasn't for everyone pulling together to make our new Australian cookware vision a reality.
Compulsory Kickstarter 'risks' section:
Risks and challenges
We have a very strong grasp of the risks associated with the project, after having (quite successfully) funded seven Kickstarter campaigns for AUSfonte cast iron and AUS-ION cookware.
After a long and intensive development period, successful production runs, overwhelmingly positive feedback from top chefs, and strong retail sales and exports, we know SOLIDteknics is becoming established as major multi-generation chef equipment brand. We believe this campaign will be at least as exciting for old and new supporters, and with new and bigger distribution in the USA we're also shipping to US backers at reasonable cost. So we believe we should achieve our funding goal.
Though undeniably very hard work, on the scale of products and businesses I’ve launched, this is certainly at the low risk end. After decades in the chef equipment industry and a long R&D process, I’m very confident the product is the best it can be - in fact, the best in the world - for all the reasons presented in the project detail.
If our backers allow us reach our target in time, the funds will be quickly applied to the tooling and production costs and we will ship on time (barring 'acts of God'!), as promised. We have a long and proven track record of keeping our promises, and fixing any unexpected issues quickly and thoroughly, with mutual respect.
