A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
BEHOLD! 3D-4B is here!
Store all your nerdy bits!
As an avid gamer, I have learned how amazingly helpful a little organization can be. I remember
D&D Sundays: grabbing books and stuffing handfuls of supplies into a
backpack as I headed out the door to my friend's waiting car. Have
you ever tried to organize dice, cards, pencils, erasers, mini's, etc? You can't really. We've all tried dividing things into smaller bags and pockets: in your jeans, backpack,
shoe-box, man-purse, or Pelican™ case. I've heard it all before and have never
met anyone who had all their gaming gear neat and orderly. We needed
options. Other craftsmen sell beautiful, well-made, and expensive boxes to hold a thing. Maybe a few things. I wanted to go a step further making a, complete, durable and accessible solution. These boxes aren't as ornate as some but rely on their functionality and simple beauty; much like the Handy Haversack which inspired the build.
I began the design process for building
these boxes after many long conversations with my girlfriend
regarding how I was driving her crazy, whining about not
building anything. She was right: I build well, I'm a nerd, nerds need sweet loot: I should make something cool that will be useful to
other nerds who suffer from the same problems I've had. As a man who
has built trebuchets to throw balls for my old Great Dane, hand-forged knives for my buddy deploying back to the Middle East,
and even sent sensor payloads into space; I knew I had a shot at
designing and building a solution to the age-old messy gamer problem.
And I think I cracked it. Check'em out;
you tell me.

$7,500 - ENGRAVING
The front face of the Battle Box will be available for engraving. In thanks to all you nerds who supported our first series of boxes, engraving will be free for our Kickstarter backers.
$8,500 - INTERCHANGEABLE NAME TAG
Personal shouldn't have to mean permanent. As much as we love our characters - sometimes we have to say goodbye. Whether it's retirement in glory or squished in the beginnings of your journey, characters come and go.
This item allows the engrave-able name space on every 4B to be replaced with a magnetic name tag that can be retired, squished, and renewed along with your character! I'll throw in a hardwood poker made from my scraps to help pop tags out.
Risks and challenges
If you've ever worked with wood, especially the good stuff, you know that everything shows. A mistake in hardwood may as well be in stone. One wrong cut or misaligned piece and you've just wasted your morning. I've had my fair share of mistakes and there are days that are truly exercises in patience. Once, I caught a tiny mistake in the design just AFTER ordering wood for my first round of hardwood prototypes. This required me to change something else to make sure that my box could still be produced on the wood size ordered. Gotta love those days when you feel victorious for eleven minutes before you break down swearing at your own cleverness for getting you right back into trouble. Fortunately, after the cursing subsided, I had an epiphany that would reduce both my cutting time and production cost.
A serious challenge for me has been making sure my community makerspace can handle the mass production of boxes. It's just me building them after all. I needed to be certain that this tremendous undertaking was wise and able to fit within the constraints of shared shop space. Some of this has been solved by offering my services on projects to help the facility in exchange for private work and storage space. The lab has been hugely supportive and I'm grateful to have other makers cheering me on and lending advice and tool repair assistance.
I will have to purchase a few extra clamps, find a second belt sander to drop a finer grit belt on, and build a few forms to speed up my production time. The little things make all the difference in productivity.
I've put in my time on these designs and from proof of concept to first prototype, the right lessons have been learned and applied to the finished product. I do believe the kinks have been ironed out and I am really excited to start sharing my creations with other gamers.
Come to beautiful downtown Davenport! Don't know where that is? No worries, sometimes we forget too. Iowa is a bit out of the way but we feel like it adds to the character of our boxes and our craftsmanship.
This pledge would enable you to come to our town and work with Boffin to create your box from start to finish. You would be directly involved in picking the individual boards and fabrics used for your boxes. A tour of our work space is also included. Best of all, you get to go home with your purchase!
Please note that this pledge does not include travel or lodging expenses.
Additionally, the exact dates and details of the trip will be arranged at the end of the campaign.
