UPDATE: Demos and Conventions!
GENCON 2012 -- We demo'ed at Gencon this year and nearly every session was filled to capacity, with onlookers and friends of demo players standing nearby and taking pictures. Donations happened right at the tables and some of the pictures from the event can be found in the updates section. We were thrilled at the response we got from player after player who say they can't wait to get a copy of the game. Thanks to all who attended and came by to see us and support the game.

Each player represents a super-powered Hero of their own design who must stop their Archenemy’s nefarious plan to destroy Metro City. To succeed, the Heroes must do battle with hordes of Minions, diabolical Villains, and the Archenemy who leads them! The more Energy and Powers a Hero develops, the closer they get to defeating their Archenemy. But time is running out! For every moment the Heroes delay, the forces of evil destroy more of the city the Heroes are trying to save.
DEFEAT YOUR ARCHENEMY! The first player to defeat the Archenemy wins the game... unless the Archenemy destroys so much of Metro City that there's nothing left to save!
CUSTOMIZE. DEVELOP. REPLAY. Devastate your enemies with thousands of possibilities and choices for your character. The base game includes over 20 explosive Power cards and many iconic Energy Sources. A randomized subset of these will be selected for each game. It's an exciting array of possibilities for your customized super-powered Hero.
TELL A STORY. In Heroes of Metro City, we encourage our players to name their Heroes and describe the action as they play their cards. No, it's not required, but it sure is a lot more fun. Instead of just playing five or six cards onto your Hero Placard, we think it's a lot more fun to play those cards while saying, "My Hero, The Phantom Panther, is avoiding Ella Moondust's gaze attack by shadow-teleporting directly behind her. Before she can turn around, he unleashes a flurry of kicks combined with slashes from the deadly bladed claws that his mutation created. Ella Moondust has been defeated, and will not trouble Metro City again."
Heroes of Metro City uses dynamic deck-building combined with our unique Energy Source slots to create a power management mechanic (using your Hero Placard) that lets you decide which powers and abilities are most important for each turn (see below). The Hero Placard also helps to guide you through the six action-packed phases of each turn.
Want to consistently draw more cards? Develop lots of Travel Powers like Supersonic Flight or the Armed Super-Vehicle. Want to deal massive damage from afar? Nuke your enemies with an Elemental Blast or snipe them with a Long-Distance Shot. Want to dazzle your foes with strange abilities from another world? Use an Ensnaring Ambush, Weather Control or the deadly Mind Spike to dominate your enemy. Developing more than one copy of the same card and adding it to your deck means you'll draw that Power from your Hero Deck more frequently on your turns. For instance, if you have three copies of Impenetrable Skin in your deck, bad guys won't often be getting past you!
Once you've completed your first turn in a game of Heroes of Metro City, you've learned everything you need to know. Each phase of your turn appears on your individual Hero Placard, so you won't ever forget what comes next. And yes, the game is easy enough for younger kids to learn, but deep enough for adults to find plenty of competition when they want it.
Here's what you'll be doing in each turn of Heroes of Metro City:
1. REINFORCE ENEMIES: Simple. Flip over a new Enemy card (face-up) if any of your Enemies were defeated during the last turn.
2. ACTIVATE POWERS: Now you get to slot all of your Energy Sources and Activate (play) your Power cards. You'll fly, teleport, leap across rooftops, swing a devastating uppercut, throw a bus, or watch as bullets bounce off of your chest.
3. BATTLE ENEMIES: Count up all the damage you can deal and see if it's enough to defeat one or more of the enemies. If you beat one, you can add that Enemy card to your deck, where it becomes a Storyline card that provides Plot Points.
4. STORY DEVELOPMENT: Add up all of the Plot Points from your Storyline cards and use them to Develop (add) a new card to your Hero Deck, chosen from the cards available in the City Supply.
5. CITY DESTRUCTION: Now it's the Enemy's chance to attack the city! But not before the City Defense has a chance to stop them. If you roll the City Defense dice and fail to roll high enough, the Enemies use their Destruction Powers to eliminate cards from the City Supply, placing them into the Rubble Pile.
6. CLEANUP: Take all of the cards you played, the cards you developed, and the cards you didn't manage to play and discard them. It's time to draw a new hand of five cards.
We chose Kickstarter as the venue to debut this game because, frankly, it costs too much money to do it any other way. We'd really like to make our game with premium components like linen cards and durable boards and that means we need your help. As you may have noticed from our pictures, we also have no art on our cards right now -- that's because amazing industry artists (guys who draw for large comic publishers, for instance) cost a decent chunk of change. There's thousands of dollars in art costs coming up for us -- and to make a truly epic game about super-powered Heroes, we need those experienced super-heroic artists.
But Kickstarter is NOT a charity and we want to recognize that. To us, being on Kickstarter means "MORE." More of everything!
For those kind enough to fund our project, we're committing to providing you with MUCH MORE than you'd get in a store for a similar game.
"HERO'S FRIEND" - FOR DONATIONS OF $5 AND UP: In addition to our most sincere thanks and your choice of "fives" (high, low, or too slow) at the next gaming convention, we're also going to immortalize your name forever in every single copy of Heroes of Metro City, right in the rule book. We don't care how many pages it takes us to cover everyone -- if you went through the trouble of donating, you deserve it. We recommend using a picture of yourself in a hero costume giving a thumbs up, but others may want to draw a picture of laser sharks or take a candid photo of a delicious sandwich that they've made. When we get funded, we'll send you a survey that asks which shirt you want, what color you want and what size you want. Pretty simple, right?
"A HERO IS BORN" - FOR DONATIONS OF $50 AND UP: We'll give you the full and complete edition (over 400 cards, 4 Hero Placards, 3 12-sided City Defense dice, and a dry erase marker) of the Heroes of Metro City game and throw in FREE shipping to anywhere in the US. This is the Origin Story. If the project receives $48,000 in funding, we will immediately begin finalizing the remaining art with professional artists (and all of you whose rewards include input into the cards and art). We will then place the order with the manufacturers who have already quoted us in detail. We will keep our contributing Heroes updated with every step of the process. Most importantly, Metro City will be safe again.

Heroes of Metro City is a deck-building game and as such, it is necessary that there be copies of the cards available to you and your fellow players to "stock" your deck with the cards you think will best help your Hero. The base set comes with 20 different Power cards (10 each), 6 energy cards (10 each), 6 different minions (5 copies of each), 10 different Villains (2 each), and 10 different Archenemies (1 each). In addition, there are also 40 copies of the two basic cards Spark Of Energy and Origin Story -- players start with 5 of each in their Hero Decks. To see actual current images of the cards, backers of any dollar amount can download our PDF of every single card in the base set. We think you will find that the base set has a broad array of power concepts and mechanics that makes gameplay full of variety and excitement. No additional cards (promo or expansions) will ever feel necessary to complete the game experience.
Who are your artists going to be? Are there opportunities for Backers to become artists for the card art?
One of our lead game designers, David Boostrom, is also the graphic designer for the game and is the artist behind Major Slagg (the big guy above). In addition to his art, we have tentative deals with comics industry veterans who will supply the game with a variety of different kinds of art to satisfy fans with a lot of different and popular art styles.
But... we are also planning on sponsoring some art contests later this month in which the winners have their submissions become final card art for the game. Keep an eye out in our update section to learn more about those kinds of opportunities!
Local game and hobby retailers are the lifeblood of our industry, and the center of all of our gaming communities. Your friendly local gaming store takes the risk on new products, spending time and precious shelf space to stock and merchandise new games. In order to make the game available to as many people as possible, we want to provide incentive for retailers to stock Heroes of Metro City.
There are several reasons for using multiple artists. The logistical one is that we want to deliver the game in as little time as possible -- and that means spreading out the (now) more than 80 illustrations needed across a larger artist workforce, so that all of the art can be made simultaneously after we're funded.
But more important to us was the understanding that comics fans have a lot of different tastes when it comes to their art. From the golden age to anime, from painterly styles to the ink-heavy noir of adult titles. We want to deliver a little something for everyone, so each person can have their favorites. The unifying elements are the consistent card layout work and the game itself.
The art is also a recognition that players want to play the game their way -- meaning some people will play a serious game and others will be silly. Some will play casually and others fiercely competitive. Different styles of art helps reinforce the notion that this is as much a game for you as it is for others who have totally different tastes.
Then there's the fact that sometimes we change our own preferences from one day to the next. "Sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you don't." (If you're under the age of 30, you might have to google that phrase.)
