Edit: Stretch goal reached! All vinyl pledges will now be upgraded to 180g clear vinyl, free of charge.
250 copies will be manufactured and allocated to the people who pledged their support for this project. If there are any spare copies left over, they will be listed on the 36 Bandcamp page around July/August time, some time after the Kickstarter rewards are sent out. Thank you all for your support!
Hello! My name is Dennis Huddleston and I record music under the alias 36. I've been releasing music for around 8 years now, during which time I have made 8 full-length LP's and 8 EP's. You can see and hear my entire discography over at Bandcamp.
In 2015, I released my 7th album Void Dance. With your help, I want to release this record on vinyl, via Kickstarter.
"Void Dance is a masterpiece in storytelling" - A Strangely Isolated Place
"Contains material of the highest order for music of its genre type" - Textura
"Absolutely gorgeous" - Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree)
I love the vinyl format. For an artist, there is simply no greater medium to present our work. All my previous LP's have been pressed as limited vinyl versions, which were quickly snapped up by fans, but due to various reasons, Void Dance never got a vinyl press. I still listen to this album quite a lot and I think it's a real shame that a vinyl version never happened. In 2017, I want to finally make this a reality.
Although recent vinyl sales of mine have been very positive, it is a much bigger gamble pressing double vinyl, as the upfront production/manufacturing costs are extremely high, and there is always the lingering possibility that lower than expected sales would leave me in a dangerous financial state, preventing me from being able to release new music in the future. Using Kickstarter is a very useful safety net to accurately gauge demand and know exactly how many copies need to be pressed in advance. This is good for fans too, because if demand is unexpectedly higher than usual (as per my last two records...), I can simply manufacture more copies and fulfill them for everyone who wants it.
What will be included?
The basic manufacturing specs are as follows:
- Double 12" Black Vinyl (135 gram)
- 350gsm matte-laminated gatefold sleeve
- Full color center labels
- UV spot gloss effect for various artwork elements
- Free digital copy, redeemable via Bandcamp
In addition, the audio itself has been completely re-mixed from the original studio project files, which means better EQ, instrument separation, stereo balance and phasing. I learned a lot when mixing down The Infinity Room and I wanted to make sure that Void Dance sounds as good as it can on vinyl, even before it reaches the mastering stage. This took me a lot of time and effort to achieve the results I wanted, but it will make for a better sounding vinyl record.
Are there any stretch goals?
Yes, just one. If this Kickstarter reaches at least £3200, then I will upgrade all vinyl backers to 180 gram clear vinyl. This won't have any effect on the sound quality, but it will make the overall design and presentation even better. Here is a mockup of what it will look like.
Who will be mastering the record?
The mastering engineer I plan to use is ambient/drone producer Rafael Anton Irisarri (The Sight Below) who runs a studio in New York called Black Knoll. He mastered my last 2 releases and because he did such a fantastic job, I plan to continue working with him for future music too. He knows ambient music inside-out and having him as an extra pair of ears is crucial. His studio also has some fantastic (and very expensive!) toys, which make my music sound the very best it can be.
Why £2,647? Isn't that a weird number to ask for?
That is the exact amount of money I need to master and press the record. I'm not doing this to make a profit. I am perfectly happy to just break-even, if it means getting this record out on vinyl. Music has always been a labour of love for me first and foremost, and this is no exception.
For those interested, here is a complete breakdown of the exact costs involved to press 250 copies (the minimum I need to manufacture) of this record, based on the 135g black vinyl specs above:
What is the "Limited Kickstarter Edition" perk?
It means your name will be included inside the gatefold sleeve, as part of the overall design, so everybody knows you contributed to funding it. I've done this in the past with my albums Dream Tempest and Shadow Play and it will look a little bit like this:
What about postage?
Postage fees will be added to your total once you pledge/checkout. For the standard vinyl version, the costs are as follows:
United Kingdom: £5
Rest of world: £11
The tiers that include more than one copy will be slightly higher. The digital version will be emailed to you upon release, obviously with no additional postage.
I use these mailers, which are probably the best vinyl mailers available here in Europe. They're a lot more expensive than most other vinyl mailers, but have the crucial benefit of corner-protection, which prevents damaged sleeves. Since I started using them a couple of years ago, I have had zero reports of damaged records. They're worth the extra expense to guarantee the records are safe from heavy-handed postal workers!
Thank you for taking the time to read all this. I really hope you will consider backing this project and making this vinyl version of Void Dance a reality. If you have any questions you think I've missed, feel free to let me know. Cheers! - Dennis/36
Risks and challenges
I am a prolific artist with a history of releasing high-quality physical music products. As an artist and label owner, who deals with delivering music around the world on a daily basis, my reputation is everything and I have no intention of letting anyone down now!
Everything is ready to go from my end. The audio mixes are finished and the artwork is also ready, minus the names of the backers who will be included inside the gatefold sleeve.
The only real challenge is setting a reasonable expectation for when everything will be ready. Right now, the average vinyl manufacturing time is around 10 weeks, plus a couple of weeks prior to this for mastering (and any amendments that need to be made)
I have set a conservative estimate of July 2017 for shipping, which gives me around 4 months to get everything finished. This Kickstarter will be live for 21 days and assuming it reaches its target, I will get the ball rolling immediately afterwards. It's possible I will actually be ready to ship the records to you sooner, but as always, please anticipate that delays can sometimes happen. I will keep you informed via updates at every key step of the process.
The digital versions will be sent to you immediately after I receive the masters from Rafael (likely a couple of weeks after the Kickstarter ends), which should make the wait for the vinyl version a little easier!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
