During the “Greatest Generation,” there was a team of heroes unlike any that came before (?) or after. They stormed the beaches of Normandy and they stood tall in the European Theater of World War Two. But after a secret mission in France, they simply...disappeared.
Where did they go?
THE GOLDEN GUARD is a proposed book series that will debut in OCTOBER 2017. Written by Vito Delsante (STRAY) and drawn by Carlos Cabaleiro (CLOUDWRANGLER), Book One - Columbia Rediviva will be 48 pages of comics...that's the same length as TWO comic books. But that's not all. Charlie McElvy, the creator of WATCHGUARD, will be creating a Golden Guard roleplaying game using the Mutants and Masterminds gaming system. In total, Book One will be a 64 page magazine that you can ONLY get through this Kickstarter (or, at shows that we appear at, but the book will NOT be available in stores...more on that in a second...).
WHAT IS THE GOLDEN GUARD?
THE GOLDEN GUARD is about a Golden Age team that finds themselves transported to today and what they see and learn about the modern world shocks them to their collective core. The American dream is dying. Black men are being killed by police. Persecution of gay men and women. Sexism. Racism. Islamophobia. And the question they need to ask themselves is, "Do we go back to change the world for the better or do we accept the world for what it is and change it now?" Somewhat political, but definitely thought provoking, THE GOLDEN GUARD is not your typical superhero comic.
"But I've never heard of the Golden Guard."
Right. Which is why all backers will be receiving weekly updates that will consist of a page from our Prelude comic, THE HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN GUARD. Beginning now, you can see the first page below:
(Psst...don't worry. We'll send you a higher resolution page once the campaign is over.)
This is one of the most ambitious ideas the three creators have ever attempted. It's socially relevant to today's audience. It's beautifully drawn and skillfully written. It's a game with hours of possibility.
WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO DO?
Our primary goal is to pay for production costs associated with making the book. Page rates for the team are paramount, and in terms of printing and fulfillment, we are working hand in hand with KrakenPrint. They are excited about the book, and WE are excited to work with them.
Between Kraken and 3 Rogues, we are going to give you a book you can be proud of. And we're going to give it to you as soon as we can. The goal is to fund the book, and while we are sending you a page from The History of the Golden Guard every week, we will be working on Book One. Once it's done, it will go directly to Kraken and, we believe, the book will be in your hands in October. That's a seven month turnaround. And going forward, one year to the day that we launched this (ie, March 2, 2018) we will be launching a second Kickstarter for Book Two and have the same turnaround time. What we are trying to do is build a relationship with you, our readers, and let you know that every year, you can set a clock to our Kickstarter being launched on the same day and for the book to be in your hands in the same time frame. A book a year...an annual, so to speak. That's our goal.
Within the book, we also have a roleplaying game. As mentioned, we're using the Mutants and Masterminds gaming system, and our first campaign takes place during the Golden Age (next year's book will have a modern era campaign...with some interesting cameos!).
WHAT DO WE HAVE TO OFFER?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
WHO ARE WE?
Our artist, Carlos Cabaleiro, is a freelance illustrator/indie comic book artist (Thrillbent, Cloudwrangler) that has worked on major licensed properties for Disney (Marvel), Lucasfilm (Star Wars), Warner Bros. (DC Comics, Big Bang Theory and the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings), Sony (Ghostbusters, Spider-Man), AMC (Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead) and Major League Baseball. Carlos has recently been one of less than 2 dozen artists hand-selected by LFL to produce artwork for licensed The Force Awakens products. This is Carlos’ first long form comic book project and his first creator-owned project.
The man behind the role-playing aspect is Charlie McElvy of Xion Studios. Charlie is well-versed in RPGs, having created his property, WATCHGUARD, as a table top game BEFORE turning it into a successfully Kickstarted comic book. WATCHGUARD #0 is currently available on Comixology.
Vito Delsante, a comics veteran of over 10 years, will be handling the heavy lifting of writing the comic (with Charlie’s input, of course) as well as the lettering and production. Vito is one of the minds behind Action Lab’s Actionverse, and is the co-creator of STRAY. He is currently writing and lettering THE PURPLE HEART for LINE Webtoon’s New Brooklyn Universe.
Other creators involved in THE GOLDEN GUARD (either in the past or currently) are Ray-Anthony Height (artist/creator of MIDNIGHT TIGER), Sean Izaakse (artist/co-creator of STRAY), David Bednarski (artist/co-creator of PRISONER OF NONE), Javier Sanchez Aranda (artist/LIBERATOR), and Gregory Giordano (artist/HOLLIDAY).
· There are no plans to publish THE GOLDEN GUARD through a publisher or for the book to be distributed by Diamond Comics or any other comic distributor. THIS KICKSTARTER IS THE ONLY PLACE THE BOOK WILL BE AVAILABLE AND IS THE ONLY WAY TO OBTAIN IT.
·KrakenPrint will be handling both the printing and the fulfillment of the book.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
Money earned will go to covering fees, production, postage/fulfillment, and printing. Any leftover money will be used to pay for new artwork that will be used in the series. All money will go back into the book, period. The first goal of this campaign, of course, is to continue giving our fans a high quality product they will grow to love and enjoy.
Risks and challenges
This is an extremely risky project for us. With no publisher behind us, we're really trying to eliminate the middle-man and make comics for our audience and offer them directly to them. That's not to say that we don't welcome retailers, but with no formal distribution (a la Diamond Comics), this Kickstarter is the only way to get THE GOLDEN GUARD in stores.
This is a book that we are really passionate about, and yes, all the money goes toward the production (page rates) and printing/fulfillment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
