About this project
If you do, then you can help 3rings get to the next stage of production. We are helping families get peace of mind by making sure ageing loved ones are ok and can maintain their independence living in their own home.
Just imagine, by mum turning on the kettle or making a cup of coffee or dad turning on the TV to watch his favourite TV show that the whole family can get notified that their loved ones are OK each day or more importantly alerted if the are not.
That's what 3rings does and we would welcome your help to get to market.
We want to change the face of family care, especially for families who are geographically dispersed and with the normal pace of life find it difficult to always be there for their ageing loved ones.
We believe that our 3rings plug can help families and give them peace of mind and maintain the independence and dignity of their ageing loved ones.
We want to provide this service to as many families as possible but we need to shift to mass production so that we can make the economics work for everyone.
With your support we can make the economics work for more families and get over the initial one off costs that would let us shift to mass production.
We know how to solve the problem and we have built the manufacturing partnerships ready so we can reduce the production costs of the 3rings Plug so we can be cost effective for more families.
We have finished the design, built, tested and sold the first production units in the UK and the team have done an amazing job in building the scalable cloud based platform - we just need a little help to shift to mass production.
Steve's family love Iris, but like many families they are geographically dispersed and the normal pace of life means they cannot always be there. This creates worry, stress and concern.
3rings wanted to created a safety net that let the family know mum or dad was OK each day.
In the UK, before mobile phones and the Internet, families used to solve the problem by gran or granddad calling a single family phone and letting it ring 3 times. That simple signal said, "I am up and active and all was well", but only to one family member.
3rings has taken that simple concept and enhanced it for the world of the Internet so now all the family can be kept in the loop.
Imagine just by mum making her morning cup of tea or dad turning on the TV that all the family get a reassuring message that everything is OK or more importantly an alert if things may not be.
We have invented and created two things, a 3rings smartplug and a cloud based family care portal:
Just plug in an appliance such as a kettle and then when mum turns the kettle on to make a cuppa - the plug sends a signal to the 3rings cloud service. Loved ones do NOT need the Internet as built into the plug is mobile technology that communicates to 3rings.
This manages all the plugs and signals and delivers reassuring messages or alerts, to the internet enabled families. Based upon individual family rules, optional reassuring messages or mandatory alerts are sent to their smartphone, tablet or computer.
The drive behind building the service is that by 2020, 50 billion things will be connected to the Internet, the 3rings Plug is one of those things.
The real powerhouse for 3rings is the cloud based platform that checks to see if ageing loved ones are OK each day and manages all the message and alert flows to and from the families.
The reason why the Internet of Things is important to us is that sensor data in the home will be increasingly accessible from a wide range of devices and that data will enable 3rings to increase its care and provide a stronger safety net to help families know their loved ones are OK each day.
The economics for the 3rings service is based around a subscription model and we feel that the service will have a global appeal.
3rings works for Steve's family and we believe that, in the UK alone, it could give tens of thousands of other families peace of mind - simply by mum making a cup of tea or dad switching on his favourite TV show.
Should we get beyond our goal (we can dream can't we), here is the road map for the use of any additional funding.
We are an experienced Internet and software team, so hardware design and creation was a new experience for us.
Here are a few of the steps in our journey into the unknown.
With no real hardware capacity we teamed up with great bunch of guys at GSPK Design in Knaresborough in the UK. We knew what we wanted, we knew how we wanted the platform to work and so GSPK took our thoughts and converted those thoughts into reality from concept to completion.
So with the design complete we were ready to go to production.
Safety is paramount and any electronic device must meet a signifcant number of tests to allow for CE certification. In our case we needed to execute or validate testing for EMC, RTT&E and Safety.
The team at YorkEMC, who were the independent testing body, were brilliant in guiding us through what was critical and what needed to be done - so a big hand to them especially Paul Hesp.
Some small changes were made to the design after the feedback from the testing. Working closely with the team at GSPK and our potential new partners Suga, we were now ready to go to our first production run.
It was a brilliant day for everyone when we got to hold our first production plug in our hands.
In parallel, Phil and Ed of Williams and Crosby were helping through the journey of packaging design and creations.
And then after a lot of blood, sweat and tears we have got to the final design with production units and more importantly the team had created an outstanding cloud based platform to support the new 3rings Plugs.
Our baby has been born and this is where it gets really exciting people love our baby and with just a little bit of exposure people are finding us and starting to buy.
So we are ready to rock & roll, we have everything in place we just need your help to make the economics of the 3rings Plug feasible.
So if you want to help mature this service, to help families look after their ageing loved ones and give more people peace of mind then please support us.
Risks and challenges
The risks are low, as we have already completed the design, development, testing and first phase production for the 3rings smartplug and the cloud based platform.
This project is about scaling up our service, to reduce production costs so we can help more families get peace of mind .
We have already identified a partner for our overseas mass production, so will move quickly once funded.
If for any reason we experience delays in delivery from our new manufacturer, we’ll keep our backers fully updated and also have contingencies in place.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
