About this project

UPDATE: We've been overwhelmed by the support we've received so far. We surpassed our original goal of 6K in just four days! We would love to include even more people in this first volume. Therefore we're introducing a stretch goal of £8,000 and if we reach it we will commission 5 more contributors to write and make art on anxiety. Thank you so much!

Anxiety. Worry, fear, longing, impatience. One word can mean so many things, be it the medical term for a mental health condition or a colloquialism for various forms of stress.

Anxiety has affected all of us in one way or another; that's why we chose it as the theme for our first book, which you now have an opportunity to buy and bring to life. On Anxiety is a collection of short fiction, essays, poetry and art around anxiety in all its various guises, featuring over twenty artists exploring them.

On Anxiety is our first book and will be a B-Format paperback of around 200 pages, with french flaps.

Exclusively for this Kickstarter, we are also launching two stunning badges - our signature 3 of Cups celebration badge in On Anxiety colours and the angry cloud badge designed by Siobhan Britton, based on an artwork in the book. They are available without the book for £6 and and bundles from £25 upwards.

Who are you?

3 of Cups is a brand new micropublisher dedicated to providing a platform for voices otherwise unheard in the mainstream. 3 of Cups Press has a vision for a more equal, more peaceful and more inclusive world, and aim to contribute towards this by championing voices and paying all contributors for their work.

Our board is made up of seven dedicated people from across the publishing and arts world, collectively bringing over 30 years of experience to 3 of Cups Press. We are currently all based around London.

Our Authors (so far!)

In pursuit of a more fair, more equal world, all of our contributors are paid for their work. The money raised by this Kickstarter will not only cover the costs of printing but will ensure that all of our writers and artists are paid.

We were absolutely flooded with submissions for this book and estimate that between us we received around a hundred pitches. Can you believe how lucky we are!? So far, we have announced the following authors but as the campaign moves through August, we will announce our other contributors!

Our first stretch goal at £8000 means we can commission 5 more authors and cover a few more of our internal costs.

Why do you need our money?

One of the reasons for a lack of diversity in publishing and the arts is the lack of funds. Since both industries rely heavily on unpaid internships and artists and writers ‘donating’ their work, it often feels like it’s only accessible to a small group of people. We want to change that and the first step is paying our writers and artists. We want to expand into a press which specialises in new voices, and paying people is part of that.

People deserve money for their work. So by preordering On Anxiety, you are ensuring we can pay our contributors up front for their work.

Our anthology series is a catalyst for the rest of our publishing. We are asking readers to invest in the future of 3 of Cups. Any funds received in excess of our stated £6,000 goal will go towards including more people in this first anthology, and towards the next books, both anthologies and individual projects. We’d like to become independent and, in future, rely only on profits to keep the company going. However, these first few projects need a helping hand.

Besides paying the contributors, we need to maintain our website so we can take in new submissions, pay the printers and the freelancers who make sure that the book is beautiful to look and clear up any stray commas.

Risks and challenges

Between us, we have over 30 years experience in the arts and publishing world. On Anxiety is the first Kickstarter campaign we've done, for our first ever book. However, all products have been carefully costed and our production line planned, thus we don’t foresee any issues in producing a paperback that is both beautiful to look at and a good read.

All our work is on schedule, with generous deadlines for our contributors that allow for some wiggle room while ensuring you should get your copy before Christmas. Our printers are lined up, and we are working with sales and distributions teams to set us up for a long future.

However, there's always the possibility that delays will happen down the line and we will endeavour to communicate with you as openly and clearly should this happen.
