About this project
3DKitbash Is Back With BONEHEADS! A re-imagining of our very first project from 2013: The 3DK Skull Kits!
Early in 2013, 3DKitbash.com developed a handful of fun 3D model kits. These kits featured about 18 digitally sculpted skulls that we initially intended to be used for commercials, video games, and as general starting points for 3D Modelers. Here's how the kits were presented:
...Since those early days we've kinda fallen in love with 3D Printing, and would like to take these interesting 'Boneheads' and make them more compatible with our current interests. As they are, the skulls will print well with SLS Printing, and they look fantastic... But they still aren't ready for FDM 3D Printing. The benchmark for at home 3D Printing!
Skulls We Have Ready To Make FDM Printable:
Formulating For Success: To make these skulls printable on desktop 3D Printers, we have to change each digital model. We have to break them into parts and orient each part so it can be 3D Printed WITHOUT messy support structures (support structures make us cranky), and with a well-designed pin system to snap the parts together. We also want to take care to make sure all the details, like sharp teeth, ridges, and deep eye sockets, are accentuated. It will take a lot of time to make these skulls FDM ready, but we think it will be worth it, and we hope you do too!
Above is the T-Rex skull prototype for an FDM 3D Printer. As you can see, it's been sectioned; each section was oriented for printing on the 3D Printer bed in layers, WITHOUT support structures, and then put together. While this prototype uses glue (acetone), if our Kickstarter is successful, we'll create a pin system to snap the skulls together - no glue needed.
Display Your Skull Printing Prowess: If you know our previous work, then you are familiar with our love of making displays for your printed 3DK projects! Boneheads is no different. - If our project is fully funded, we'll also be sending all our backers at the $15 Reward level (and above) a digital model of a mounting base. With this printable base you can display skulls on your wall, on a shelf, or even your fridge. ...as long as you provide the magnet.
Sets The Skulls Will Be Divided Into: ...Depending on your reward level, choose any 1 of the sets, 2 of the sets, or get all 3!
The Project Is Long, And Full Of Terrors: Each of the 18 3D model skulls needs about 3-5 more hours of digital sculpting work to make them printable on your 3D Printer. That’s an average of 72 hours of sculpting and development time left to go. We hope you’ll choose your reward level now and help us make our skulls FDM 3D Printable!
THANK YOU FOR BACKING BONEHEADS!!! ~Natalie of 3DKitabash.com

Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is that we might find that one or two of the skulls just won’t print well enough on and FDM printer for us to release. If that happens, we promise we’ll replace the skull with a similar skull that will print in a way we think you’ll be happier with. ...But rest assured we like challenging / fun 3D Prints, and won't shy away from complexity.
Quincy has digitally sculpted and invented for the toy industry for a decade, and we’re confident in his abilities to make these skulls printable on FDM home 3D printers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The general 3DKitbash License Agreement can be found here: http://3dkitbash.com/index.php…
Basically it boils down to this: If you intend to make money or promote yourself (as many businesses do) with our files after you've 3d printed them, please limit it to 100 copies (per element) before you repurchase a kit. As a license renewal. ...We try to provide good quality models at a low price, and this is how we see it working best while also being fair to everyone. ...If you're just a private user (Not selling or promoting oneself for business intentions), please repurchase after printing an element 1000 times.
