About this project
Firstly, an introduction: We're a small group of professional toy developers that want to make a name for ourselves by helping Makers to build better, and faster. To do this we've come up with a kit that we believe can help all 3D Printing enthusiasts, both big & small! Here it is:
Have you found yourself disappointed with some of your 3D printer's printouts? Maybe you were hoping to printout a highly detailed model, only to find that your 3D printer is giving you limp results, and all at the cost of expensive material and a lot of time?...
If so, don't despair! There is hope. - And we've come up with a kit that we believe will help you forecast your 3D Printer's abilities and results! There's no need to risk Money, Time, and ultimately Heartache any longer! ...Or at least, we don't think so.
3DKitbash's '3D Printer Test Kit' allows you to test print small 'Tolerance Chips' (about the size of a dog tag) before you commit a lot of time and expensive material. With these tolerance chips, you can see how your 3D printer will handle different modelling characteristics or materials.
The kit will consists of 8 'Tolerance Chips'; each featuring unique characteristics at various scales & intervals and will allow you to see how your 3D Printer handles differing shapes and forms. It's very possible that your 3D Printer will have no trouble printing the larger forms of a chip, but have a few anomalies show up whilst trying for the smaller features. It's knowing these limitations that will help you in your planning, building and sizing of your 3D prints.

Now that you have a good understanding for the purpose of the Tolerance Chips, here are our plans for the features (and their purposes) that we will be addressing on all of the 8 chips:

As stated in the video, each Tolerance Chip will come with a PDF (aka Paperwork) that details the true sizes of the features that are found on that chip.
Once you've fully tested your 3D Printer, there's no doubt that you'll have more 'Tolerance Chips' than you can fit on a keyring. No Problem! We will be including a 3D Printable 7x5" display base that you can house in any 7x5" picture frame. Just press the Tolerance chips onto the base and they'll be set to display, like so:
This kit will also help in gauging 3D Printing materials you're not very familiar with. Just send along a chip to your preferred 3D Printing vendor (ours is Shapeways.com), and have them print the chip in the material you're curious about.
We want to help Makers, Inventors, and 3D Explorers do their thing Better & Faster. It's a passion of ours and one that keeps us constantly on the move.
As for the quality of our future Tolerance Chips: I hope our history can speak for us in that we’ve been creating prototypes and inventions for global toy companies for a long time (Past 10 Years). Here recently (Past 2 Years) we've also been Digitally sculpting for the highly detail scrutinizing toy industry. ...Barbie, Monster High, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, and a host of others who have all given us the stamp of approval. We hope you will too.
So that's where we are. ...The backing we need is largely for renting the expensive equipment it takes to 3D model on, and then the test-printing to make sure our forms and sizes will be relevant to all serious 3D Printers.

As entrepreneurs, we've come to understand that everything happens quickly, smoothly, and super easily. We expect this will be effortless, really. No sweat!
Okay, okay, let's just say we DO have a setback...a delay...Quincy has a horrible digital sculpting accident and develops carpal tunnel...
There's always the chance that we could run into production issues with patches or one of our sculpting stations could potentially go down.
Since we really are seasoned pros, we've learned to under promise, over deliver, and listen to our community. In our other work lives, we've worked with multi-million dollar budgets, completed intense projects with crazy deadlines, and attracted insane resources to get the job done. With that experience guiding us, we've been diligent in planning, and have built unforeseen issues into our estimates of the time it will take to deliver to you.
