About

Carve your way to victory through either cunning and tactics or honesty and transparency. Strive to build 5 of the most magnificent totems. With the chance to both score points and reduce those of other players!  As players race to claim the crown, not all of them may be honest about the cards they lay. Will you be wiped out by the powerful paws of a bear or will you feel the teeth of the wolf sever your chances at victory? Only the wings of an Eagle can protect you!

Totem is a one of a kind card-and-counter crucible – an all-out scramble for 2 - 4 players.  You’ll compete to construct magnificent totems  – and to ruin your enemies' chances of doing the same. Unleash a pack of wolves, find strength in a colony of ants or take shelter under the eagle’s wings. The aim is to finish the game with at least 5 completed totems scoring the most points. The game consists of a deck of 50 cards and 130 stackable wooden tokens. In the deck there are six unique animal cards, each with their own distinct ability. The cards allow you to collect tokens which can be used to build totems and score you points.

You can build a totem with whatever you want, lie if you have to, just don't get caught! How you build your totem will affect how many points you can score. Bears and Wolves tear down other players' totems, Moose maximise a totem's point value and Ants score more points when they stick together. A totem is only safe if there is an eagle on top of it to keep a look out for hungry predators.

Featuring stunning original artwork and simple, flexible rules which adapt to your group size, Totem is different every time you play. This is our first project from Oakfire Games, and, from our table to yours, thank you for supporting us on this grand adventure.

A Quick Breakdown (not the complete rules)

Setup: Deal 6 cards to each player. 

Playing a round: All players play their cards at the same time. Play as many cards as you like from your hand face down, so long as they are the same animal type (unless you want to lie).

There is an order: The animals are read aloud in their order Wolf, Eagle, Bear, Moose, Ant, Frog. When an animal is called, any players playing that animal type will say so. Animals score points in different ways and their abilities are enacted in this order.

Playing honest: You have two frogs in your in your hand, you play two frogs and you shout 'Frog' when it is read aloud. You then build with two frog tokens at the end of the round.

Lying: You have two frogs in your hand, but really you can play anything (a Bear and an Ant if you like). Regardless, you don't think you can get many points playing honestly, so you lie instead. When 'Moose' is called out, you say that the two cards you've played are Moose instead. You then build with two Moose tokens at the end of the round.

Punishment: Once all players have announced which animals they are playing, they are free to challenge another player's honesty. If you are caught lying, your turn ends immediately. You don't get to add to any of your totems, you can't challenge anyone else AND you don't draw any new cards on your next turn. The same goes if you challenge a player who was playing honestly. 

Round end: All players draw a hand back to 6 cards (unless they were lying) and a new round begins. 

Game end: When a player has 5 totems with eagles on top at the end of a round, the game ends. Count the points in each totem and the player with the most points wins.

Strategy

To truly dominate the table, players must understand the complex ecosystem of Totem and adopt strategies that take advantage of it. A core mechanic in Totem is the card order: a hierarchy of the animal powers. Cards are all played at the same time, but their abilities are confined to their place in this natural order. As players announce their cards in this order, those towards the end may seize an opportunity to deceive. 

"Your opponent plays Wolves. Wolves go first in this hierarchy of power and your vulnerable totems ripped apart. The Eagle you were going to announce now seems pointless, so you change your mind and shout "Bear!" as you bite back. You hope you're not caught out in your desperate lie and you watch your opponent's totem crumble. They stare at you in disbelief... "Do you really have a Bear card?". You keep a cool head and you let them know you meant it."


You'll probably enjoy this game if you like Citadels, Skull or Coup.


Our Campaign

We are running this Kickstarter with the goal of producing a first-edition limited print. We will stagger the availability so that we can manage demand; we don't want to overload ourselves with more orders than we can handle. We have set ourselves an achievable funding goal and we aren't making any big promises. We just want everyone to be happy with our game. About Oakfire Games

We love table top games. In fact, Duncan was a founding member of a board game club at university. This is our first attempt at taking things that we love about the hobby and fleshing it out in our own unique way. We've taken concepts that we enjoy in other games to create something new and different. There's a childish joy to stacking things, so our game uses quality wooden pieces and distinct artwork to turn stacking things into competitive fun!

Oakfire is the name of our table top game development team. I say 'team', there's only two of us! There's Duncan, who came up with the mechanics of the game, the design and concept, and there's Sion, who made the whole thing come to life with his incredible artwork. It doesn't feel like we've been doing this long, but Totem has been in development for at least a year. It's just moved so quickly; from Duncan saying "here's a fun game" to Sion smashing out a draft of the artwork in about a week and now here we are a few more months down the line, with a prototype and play-testing out the way, we have our first finished game. This is an incredibly exciting adventure for us and we are truly grateful for your support.
