20K Stretch revealed! (same info as update)
It's another simple one. I don't think we can get to 20k in three hours but if we do, everyone who has pledged $100.00 or more will get an additional castle. I will include it with your previous reward, and I still cover the shipping. 20K is the amount needed for me to break into a really good machine, thereby decreasing the run time on your present parts, and all future parts. Like I said, I don't think we can hit it, but holy crap would it be awesome! :-) I was going to say "Make me proud people" but I'm already proud.
The New (almost as nice) Mother Load Reward!
Check the update for info on the new reward level and a 20K teaser...
The last 48 hour stretch. (same info as update)
Well things have slowed down this last week (I'm calling it the Diablo 3 effect) and, with only 48 hours to go, this project is almost over. I'm sad to say it looks as though I'm not going to be getting that Wil Wheaton tattoo (which is ok I suppose, my wife would have killed me anyway) but I thought I would offer everyone this one last stretch goal for encouragement. If we hit 12.5K I will make a custom mystery piece for each backer that has pledged $50.00 or more. At the end of the project when you get your survey one of the questions will be "What do you think the mystery piece should be and why?" Once all the ideas are in, I will choose the one that sounds like the most fun and get to work.
$20,000.00 Stretch Goal (same info as update)
There will be more added to this as we get closer but I've got a surprise teaser for you. As a joke I put on the FAQ that I was so nerdy I had a tattoo of Wil Wheaton on my back...Well, I don't. But, do to the crazy amount of people clamoring to see the tattoo, I've decided to offer up my body on the Altar of Nerdom. That's correct ladies and gents. If we hit 20K I will get a tattoo of Wil Wheaton's face on my back. Not a really big one, just a nice, classy Wheaton face. I'm actually really geeked about this... He is kind of a hero of mine. I mean, come on, there is a reason we keep electing him president of the Oasis.
(Modest Magic employees are required to always "Try and err on the side of fun." When deciding whether or not to add this as a stretch we had to follow the rules. However, if there is any kind of legal problem with this, or if it breaks a kickstarter rule, or even if Mr. Wheaton himself calls me up, and he's like, "Hey man don't do this"... then I just won't do it.)
$15,000.00 Stretch Goal (same info as update)
I'm calling this one the 15K equals 15% reward. It's pretty straight forward. If we hit 15K everyone who has backed the project will receive an additional 15% more pieces from their reward level. This does not include "top off" rewards or any rewards gained from previous stretch goals.
$10,000.00 Stretch Goal (same info as update)
It took three days! Three days to hit the $7,500.00 stretch goal. Amazing, purely amazing. But do you know what I say? I say we can hit 10k in half that time! 200% here we come! Ok, you feeling fired up? Good, now lets get to the good stuff.
I wanted to do something really fun that involved all of you for the 10k stretch goal. This is what I've come up with. At the end of the project anyone who pledged $50.00 before the 10k stretch goal will get to vote on the next line of terrain that Modest Magic produces. The following are your choices.
- "Villages and Towns" (Medieval setting to compliment "Castle and Keep")
- "Caves and Dungeons" (All sorts of underground goodness)
- "War Ravaged Future" (Gothic dystopian destruction. Think warhammer 40k)
- "Modern" (Skyscrapers, parking structures, that kind of thing)
- "Fantasy" (Treetop villages, underwater cities, everything "Modern" isn't.)
Now, are you ready for the good part? You get some. The 10k stretch reward is- you pick the next line of terrain and then when a winner is announced, I make it and send you a good sized sample. The only thing I ask is that you pay shipping for the new line samples, otherwise I wouldn't be able to offer this reward.
For you "Mother loaders," You already get this. You don't get a sample, you get the line, and your shipping is already covered. So what's in it for you? Custom pieces. When the next line is decided I will ask each of you for a custom piece idea that is either from the new line or "Castles and Keeps." We will design it together and then you'll get it shipped to your door. If you so choose the piece will never be available for sale, or, if you want it sold it, will be called whatever you name it and you will get credited for its design.
$7,500 Stretch Goal
If the project reaches $7,500.00 then everyone who has pledged $100.00 or more will get to choose either 20 of the single window pieces or 5 of any of the broken wall pieces (everything in a picture counts as one piece) per castle level reward! So for those of you who have pledged for two castle level rewards that's 40 single window pieces or 10 of the broken walls or a combination of the two. For those of you who chose the Mother Load thats either 60 single window pieces or 15 broken wall pieces or any combination you would like in the increments of 20 or 5.
In addition anyone who has pledged $50.00 or more will receive 10 of the new "single endcaps" for every 50 dollars pledged.
Top Off Rewards
I've been asked to provide a list of top off rewards for people who want to add a little of exactly what they want to their orders. I thought it sounded like a great idea so here is the list. Just add the monetary amount to your reward and at the end of the project I will poll you for what you want.
- $3 per 4 "doorway pieces"
- $3 per 5 "single broken wall pieces" (from last update)
- $3 per 6 "single endcaps"
- $3 per "small floor"
- $5 per "large floor"
- $5 per 4 "single window pieces"
- $5 per any "large broken wall" piece
The story so far...
The truth is, there are a lot of significant problems with the terrain available on the market today. It's expensive, it usually weighs a ton, and you can't take it apart and make something else. But for me, a role-player, the biggest problem is that usually, you can't go inside it. I designed this terrain because I didn't want something that I could only march an army around, I wanted something to build a story around.
Enter our modular terrain. Your imagination is the fuel that drives this bad boy. Have a quest that takes place in a tall tower? No problem. Purchased a module that has an intricate dungeon crawl? Build away.
Now, I'm not saying this doesn't have some serious war gaming potential too. It certainly does. In fact, every war gamer that I've showed it to has challenged me to a duel too the death for it. (This isn't true, but honestly, you war gamers are intense!)
The plot thickens..
I'd like to show you what you'll be getting for your rewards. Hopefully this is the kind of stuff you've been dreaming about as long as I have. Because if it is then that means I'm helping you with a small dream in return for your support of my really big dream. And that ain't bad.
This is a single wall piece. This is the backbone of the terrains modularity. If you get it as a reward you get to use the word modularity to people.
A doorway piece. Door included! All my life I've found doors to be the most convenient way of getting through a wall.
Two of the pieces I mentioned above. Plus a tiny hair I totally meant to put on top of the wall. You know, for good luck.
This is a large wall. Not necessary, as you can make this wall from the single pieces but it shortens construction time a little. Which means more time for monster slaying and treasure counting.
Battlements. Saving lives for thousands of years! Can also be used as end caps to get rid of pesky flanges. (Note: When used as an end cap, may not save lives)
Gate Wall. Every castle needs a gate. Unless it's on the back of a giant magical turtle. If that's your plan then use this as a place for the turtles tail to go or something. (Giant magical turtle not included)
Small floor piece. All surfaces meant to be walked on feature a 1 inch grid. Same as pictured below only smaller.
Large floor piece. Same as pictured above only larger.
To be continued...
I don't want to stop here. I want to make a whole slew of modular pieces. But I need your help to do that. I have everything I need except a machine. The prototype that you see here was cut on a small hobby CNC router. One piece at a time... for days, and days, and- Well you get the point. What I need is a serious router, one that will cut 8 to 10 times faster than my current one. I've done a lot of research and with the funding from this project combined with my own resources I can buy one of these machines. If funding goes higher than what I've set the goal at then I will buy a better machine. This means your parts get to you that much faster.
About the author...
One thing you should know about me is that I don't just play games, I live them. I didn't just graduate from high school, I cleared the area and moved on. I didn't get promoted at work, I leveled up. When I married my wife I went from solo play to co-op. I didn't have kids, I spawned minions. (Please, please, don't tell my wife I said that) In short, I love everything about games. These last few months while I developed this prototype have been the most fun of my life. As far as communities go there is none better to be a part of than Gaming. People work in the game industry because it's fun. Period. No one ever thought to themselves, "Hey you know what will get me rich? Making game accessories." You do it because it's fun.
There are 10 doorway pieces in the Castle Reward.
525 Single wall pieces
24 large walls
12 Gate Pieces
36 Small Floors
12 Large Floors
30 Door ways
I have a tattoo of Wil Wheaton's face on my back. (Not true... but it might be soon) :-)
They are pretty tough. You can break them if you try, but at a half inch thick it's not exactly easy. Plus, people have been trying to figure out how to get rid of Styrofoam since it was invented.
Absolutely. Only be cautious with what you use. If you spray paint them they will melt like the Wicked Witch of the West. No lie. However, you can use a water based spray like Krylon H20 or Rustoleum Aqua. Acrylic paint through an airbrush works very good as well.
I sincerely wish that I could provide them painted, but the cost of the product would skyrocket. Besides painting them is a lot of fun.
