This is a third "quarterly" in an ongoing project I started on Patreon. The basic idea is to create 5th Edition D&D monsters with an oldskool feel. Each monster includes a big, bold, black and white illustration plus statblock on the main page. The facing page is 100% fluffy stuff. You will get Description, Lore, Ecology and Adventure Seeds. As well as a Size Comparison.
In addition to the stat and fluff pages, I have created paper mini designs and VTT tokens for each monster. The idea that you can grab a monster and within a few moments you can slap together an encounter or even an adventure along with visual props quickly and easily.
My design inspirations for the books are the Tome of Horrors Complete (Swords and Wizardry version) and S. Petersen's Guide to Cthulhu Monsters (original and new are both awesome).
I went for a novel design that is light and "zine-like" as one reviewer has put it. First off, if you haven't noticed, these are slim books. There are only 13 monsters per Quarterly. And, I used a Landscape format so the pages are a bit... um... floppy. So, you can easily flash the big illustration and size comparison to your players without revealing and rules, abilities, etc.
Risks and challenges
I am in a bit of a quandary about the Print On Demand version. I am relying on DriveThruRPG to fulfill PDF hosting and any potential PoD duties. Unfortunately, the Landscape format makes PoD a bit more expensive. I prefer this layout, but if the project gets enough backing and the backers want a Portrait format I will adjust. If it goes really well, I will go back to Volumes 1 and 2 to adjust those to Portrait as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
