Hi, I’m Sue Stratford and I love creating cute designs for hand knitters.

Last year I designed some HUGE bird knitting kits. They were so popular that we sold out at every show we visited!

Giant Blue Tit

Many customer asked if they came in different sizes as they really wanted some tiny versions. I wanted to re-create the giant birds in mini form and so a blackbird, robin and blue tit were hatched.

The idea was to take the new mini kits to the Autumn knitting and fibre fairs to give people a choice of huge or tiny birds. As usual, I didn't know where to stop and kept coming up with more ideas. As soon as I mentioned my plan to friends and family they came up with ideas too! I soon had a collection of not three but twelve birds! Instead of printing out twelve individual bird patterns, I wanted to create something special, so I decided to have a go at self-pubishing a pattern book. The process has definitely been a challenge for me, but I have loved researching all the options, the photography, and laying out my book.

I am now at the stage of test knitting (thank you to Phyl!) and editing and after making a final few twiddly additions to the design it is ready to go!

I started off with British birds divided into three collections; Garden, Countryside and Coastal birds and include a Blackbird, Blue Tit, Robin, Woodpecker, Kingfisher pheasant, Seagull, Puffin and Oystercatcher. Then I just couldn’t resist making some exotic birds so added a Flamingo, Parakeet and Hummingbird.

To have a look at the birds 'in the knit' check out my Youtube video!

There are still a couple more I want to design so these will be available as an additional download once the book has launched and a paper copy will be sent out to all my backers with their books.

I am also planning to make up yarn kits to support the book using pure British wool in fabulous colours and everything else you need to re-create the birds as you see them in the book.  They will also be available on my website.

In order to bring the birds to life I need to raise £1100 for the initial print run, I am hoping you will be as excited as I am about my little birdies and want a book for yourself (or a friend)!

By the time the kickstarter closes the book will be ready to go and I may even have a proof I can show you! I just need your help to spread the word, and get me started! I hope to get all the pledges out by the end of September at the very latest.

My costs are simple - I am just asking for enough to put in an order for the book with my printer.

Watch the video to see some of the birds and find out a bit more.

Risks and challenges

My book is nearly ready to go, it just needs some technical editing to make sure there is nothing I have missed!
It will be ready to go to print at the beginning of September and copies will ship by the end of September.

This also allows time for any unforeseen issues that may crop up - issues... I am ready for you!
