The Mission

Ta-Nehisi Coates is one of the leading voices of our generation on race in America. His memoir Between The World & Me was a bestseller and earned him the MacArthur Genius Award. The man is brilliant, straight forward, and overflowing with ideas about how our country could right the wrongs of the past. And yet, have you noticed that when he is interviewed, he's asked the same two questions: "Coates, why do you think white people like your book?" and "Coates, what about hope?" Over and over and over again! It's actually become a running joke for interviewers to try NOT to ask Coates about hope.

Why? Why is it that the most brilliant, courageous, imaginative intellectuals of our time are so rarely asked The Next Question about their ideas, their commitments, or their values? I submit to you that it is to our detriment as a nation when we find ourselves in these circular conversations. We must move beyond questions like "Why cant white people say the n-word?" or "But what about black-on-black crime?" or "Why is blackface bad?" Together, we can move our national conversation on race FORWARD by allowing expert voices to speak in full.

With your support, we are committed to creating a new talk show web series called The Next Question. Our mission is to be a part of expanding America's imagination for the pursuit of racial justice by asking the leading voices of our time to tell us more, to add depth to this conversation, to convince us of what's possible for our future.

We will invite artists and activists, historians and academics, writers and more to converse with us.

Lets ask The Next Question

The Details

Together, we will produce season one of The Next Question

6 episodes. 6 weeks. 6 opportunities to be inspired by those who are making waves in the world of racial justice.

Austin Channing Brown, the author of Im Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness, will be your host. She will conduct each interview, digging for the practical and the profound.

Joining her will be co-hosts Jenny Booth Potter and Chi Chi Okwu. Jenny is also the Creative Producer of the show. And Chi Chi serves as the Content Producer. You can read more about our team below.

Each episode will explore a facet of racial justice according to guests expertise: education, criminal justice, health, literature, journalism, politics, history, etc. We know the pursuit of racial justice is expansive. Rather than oversimplify, let's seek to understand the nuances, parallels and complexities of racial injustice in America.

Each episode will be free on TNQ Show's facebook page. You can expect each episode to run about 40-45 minutes. So this fall, grab your popcorn and join us each week for The Next Question.

The Funds

Producing a show is expensive, but we need more people who have been marginalized to have the opportunity to present their ideas, their personalities, and yes, their faces, on screen.

Your pledge will be used to produce season one in its entirety. Because of your support, we can cover the expenditures related to pre-production, production, post-production and marketing. Please take a look at the information below to see how your dollars will be used.

$50,000 is our fundraising goal!

In addition to Kickstarter's fees, this is where the money is going per episode:

  • Film Crew + Equipment: $3,750
  • Travel Costs + Meals + Location: $2,750
  • Post Production + Transcription: $700
  • Administrative Costs: $650

The Stretch Goals

If we are 10K over our fundraising goal, we will add a bonus episode!

If you all get really excited, and double our goal, we commit to bringing you season two!

The Rewards

The Book List Poster will be finalized after we've confirmed all of our guests for season one of The Next Question. Once finalized, you can expect a beautifully designed and well-curated book list from our team.

What a great way to make a statement at work *wink*.  (The TNQ watermark will be removed from your reward!)

The Filming

We will be filming in The Windy City! Have you walked through Chicago in the summer? It's the perfect place to bring our guests to enjoy the city and talk about racial justice. We plan to film this summer, and if necessary into the early fall. We have assembled a tremendous team of videographers, audio experts, and storytellers to bring this web series to life.

We will begin post-production during filming until all episodes have been completed. We want you to be able to add The Next Question to your fall line-up.

There are multiple ways to stay up-to-date on the filming process. Become a backer of this project and you will receive automatic announcements. You can also join the newsletter, where we will share behind the scenes photos, video clips and announcements about guests. If you really want to get in on the fun, consider joining the TNQ Show facebook page, where we will be sure to share all the exciting news as it unfolds and host watch parties when post-production is complete!

Risks and challenges

This is not the first time our team has produced interviews on film, so we know there can be setbacks- people get sick, the weather makes travel difficult, we forget that not everyone works over holidays, etc. But we are committed to forming contingency plans that will still bring these episodes to life. If there are any changes with our timeline or guest line-up, you will be the first to know.

Regarding any rewards that our experiential (ie: coming to set), we will do our best to over communicate regarding dates, times and locations. We hope you will understand that sometimes those details may change for reasons out of our control.
