I’m Chris-Rachael Oseland, the culinary mad scientist behind Kitchen Overlord and author of nerdy cookbooks including:
- An Unexpected Cookbook: The Unofficial Book of Hobbit Cookery
- Wood for Sheep: The Unauthorized Settlers Cookbook
- SteamDrunks: 101 Steampunk Cocktails and Mixed Drinks
- Kitchen Overlord’s Illustrated Geek Cookbook
This year, I’m strapping on my apron and stepping back into my blue box to bring you fresh Whovian recipes and commentary for every episode of the new series.
After publishers told me I’d be lucky to sell 300 copies, Dining With the Doctor: The Unauthorized Whovian Cookbook went on to sell over 20,000 copies in less than two years. Whoa. I never expected that. Since I barely thought I’d sell a room party’s worth of books, I published the first edition using CreateSpace, Amazon’s print on demand service.
CreateSpace is great for black and white trade paperbacks, but the interior paper quality just isn’t up to cookbook standards. On top of that, to keep it down to a reasonable $20 price point, I had to eliminate all the formatting and shrink the photos in order to fit a 50,000 word book into 100 pages. The end result wasn’t the book I dreamed of publishing.
Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated takes the best content from the first edition, doubles the total number of recipes with all new content, and packages it all in a handsome, professionally printed book any geek would be proud to display on their coffee table.
So what does revised and expanded mean?
The first edition of Dining With the Doctor had one recipe for every episode of series one through six. Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated will have recipes for every episode of series one through eight, taking you all the way from Eccleston to Capaldi. Each recipe also includes a little bit of recap.
For those of you who already own the first edition (thank you so much!) I’ve listened to your feedback at conventions and read reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. You’re right. Some of the recipes in the first edition are a little lame. Of the original 100, I’m keeping 60 of the best and replacing the rest with better ones - including a lot more of your number one request - more iconic aliens.
While I’m at it, a lot of folks have pointed out Doctor Who is a family show. When they’re flipping through the episode recaps with their kids, they want the whole family to be able to make any recipe they see. Therefore, I’m moving all the cocktails to their own separate chapter in back and replacing them in the main body of the book with brand new recipes for those episodes. I’m also adding new recipes to the popular bonus chapter for fish fingers and custard
The revised & expanded 2nd edition includes:
- 60 recipes from the 1st edition (87 episodes, stories #157-224)
- 60+ brand new recipes (116 episodes, stories #157-253)
- Brand new, high quality food photography
- Interior artwork by Tom Gordon
- Bonus chapters for both Cocktails and Fish Fingers & Custard
- Index broken down by dietary restrictions & food allergies so you can easily feed all your friends
Printing full color books is expensive. Check out my completed Kickstarter for the Illustrated Geek Cookbook for a financial breakdown of that book’s complete expenses. It cost nearly $20,000 (which gives you some idea what it takes to print a quality color book) and it was only half the length of Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated.
The more pages it has, the more Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated will cost to print. There’s no way I can get around that.
I really want to give you recipes for the 8th Doctor (everyone who loves the Big Finish audio dramas knows he’s so much more than the face of the TV movie), the War Doctor, a whole new chapter for Dalek-tastic souffles, and a few other goodies. To include EVERYTHING in this book, the printers say it’ll cost close to $35,000.
If I raise the absolute minimum, you’ll still get recipes for every episode of series 1-8 plus extra chapters for both Cocktails and Fish Fingers & Custard. There’ll be fewer photos, and the type might be a little smaller so I can fit more than one recipe per page, but you'll still get over 120 Whovian recipes. That said, I want to give you so much more.
The money from this Kickstarter is going straight to printing the books, printing the other rewards, and postage to get the books into your hands. I’m covering the cost of food, photography, and everything else myself. My only goal with this Kickstarter is to give you the best Whovian cookbook possible.
Kickstarter stretch goals:
$15,000 - Matt Smith inspired postcard for all print book backers
$18,000 - Daleks vs Cybermen inspired postcard for all print book backers
$20,000 - Books Printed in Hardback!
$21,000 - 8th Doctor Included in the Cookbook
$24,000 - War Doctor Included in the Cookbook
$25,000 - Inspector Spacetime Included in the Cookbook
$27,000 - Illustrated Geek Recipe Poster for all print backers (Dalek Bread)
$30,000 - All New Chapter for Souffles
If that’s not enough excitement for you, Tom Gordon, my co-conspirator for the Illustrated Geek Cookbook, has agreed to draw three all new, never before seen Illustrated Geek Recipe Posters for Eccleston, Tennant, and Capaldi, all based on recipes in Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated.
Since Kitchen Overlord already showed Matt Smith some love in the Illustrated Geek Cookbook, I want to complete the set and give backers the chance to decorate your kitchens with posters paying homage to all four of the new series Doctors.
I know there are a ton of amazing geeky kitchen products out there vying for your hard earned dollars. To thank you for your support, I’ve posted two minute geeky kitchen gadget reviews of a dozen Whovian gadgets.
You can find them on YouTube or at Kitchen Overlord (where I have additional photos, commentary, and occasional snark about the things that are badly made fanspolitation. Don’t worry - there are also plenty I love!)

Risks and challenges
The sales rep promised the Illustrated Geek Cookbook would be here before Thanksgiving. It arrived five months late.
The writing and recipe photography for Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated will be finished will before the end of this year, but I know professional printing & bulk book rate shipping takes longer than the printers claim. Sometimes, much longer. To be on the safe side, this time I'm predicting reward shipping in June 2016 (while not-so-secretly hoping I can get it to you sooner.)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
