Wylder is a online marketplace for women's adventure goods, launching this fall. We're creating a multi-vendor platform for active, adventurous ladies who share a deep love of wild places. Wylder is a celebration of the modern outdoorswoman: dirty feet, salty hair, chalky hands, freckled skin, calloused fingers, and a free spirit.
Our well-curated online store will provide women with relevant, beautiful and functional clothing, gear, and lifestyle goods that come in a variety of color options (not just pink, purple, and pastels), and that celebrate a diversity of body types. You'll also find in-depth gear reviews, packing guides, travel tips, and compelling stories of brave women making an impact in their communities across the globe.
The brands we partner with create products that strike a balance between beauty and functionality, and bridge the gap between urban and outdoor lifestyles so that we can do more, with less. These progressive, forward-thinking companies are creating thoughtfully designed, tried-and-true products, and have long since abandoned the ‘pink it and shrink it’ paradigm that’s been prevalent in the outdoor industry.
Wylder is built for women who are called to wild places. You don’t have to be a professional athlete or a rugged outdoorsperson to enjoy the connection and community that inevitably come from spending time in nature. At the heart of Wylder is the philosophy that less is more, and that wilderness is our greatest teacher. We’re inspired by snow-capped peaks, winding rivers, fiery sunsets, and moonlit nights.
We value curiosity, compassion, and boldness. We think howling at the moon under a starry sky, skinny dipping in icy cold lakes, and laughing loudly with friends around a campfire, are a part of a life well-lived!
We’re inspired by purpose, accountability, and transparency in business, and have founded this company as a Benefit Corporation in Salt Lake City, Utah. A B-Corp is a legally protected mission-driven company. What does that mean? We'll always have the right to prioritize our philanthropic interests as a core part of our business model, no matter what happens.
Over the next year, we will be working closely with B Lab to achieve our full certification, and join the community of B-Corps across the globe that have made the commitment to using business as a force for social good. As Wylder grows, you will see us develop specific partnerships, campaigns, products, and content to:
- Connect: people to wildland
- Educate: for human and environmental health
- Cultivate: outdoor adventure stewards, not just consumers
- Conserve: and protect wildland, to increase ecosystem diversity and resilience.
As our community and marketplace grows, so will our positive impact!
Wylder was developed by Jainee Dial and Lindsey Elliott out of the need for better products to pursue our passions and the desire to create more mindful patterns of consumerism.
Jainee Dial is a Digital Media Producer who brings over 12 years of experience in web design, film production, and creative content curation to Wylder. Lindsey Elliott brings a professional background in sustainability advocacy, international development, strategic program development, and non-profit management. Both are lifelong outdoorswomen, with proven track records of leadership in their respective fields. (Read more on the bio page).
We've consulted thousands of people about this concept, from industry CEO’s to our favorite dirtbags, and not one person has said — ‘are you sure there is a market for this?’ The response is always a resounding, 'YES!'
Yes - outdoor women want this platform to exist.
Yes - innovative brands need a louder voice in the outdoor industry.
Yes - there should be a unified channel created by women, for women.
And yes – the time is now!
We’ve dedicated over two years to vetting and developing this concept. We’ve left the comfort of salaries, become vagabond freelancers, lived in our adventure mobiles, and have become the basements dwellers of kind relatives and friends, like true start-up warriors. The sacrifices have been immense, and the risks plentiful; so much thought, so much work, so much heart. This isn’t a side project for us – this is our life's work, and our body of professional experience distilled into the commitment to bring this dream to life!
Kickstarter is all or nothing. Which is why we need YOU - our community, our friends, our like-minded adventure buddies. You will determine the scale by which we are able to create this platform. We are bootstrapping our business because we believe in the power of community, and we can't do this alone - nor would we want to. We're creating Wylder to serve the greater good, to offer you the best products, tell the most compelling stories, and unite our voices so that we can rally behind causes worth fighting for. Here's our estimated cost breakdown:
Make your voice heard by contributing to our campaign, and sharing our project with your friends and community. We're truly grateful for the support!
Risks and challenges
We’re on the verge of creating a dynamic multi-vendor marketplace and content platform, and that is no small task. The good news is, we have heart, resourcefulness, and we’re hungry for this. We’ve restructured our entire lives in order to dedicate everything we’ve got to bringing this marketplace to life, and making it the most relevant resource. We’re qualified and resourceful, and we will continue to blaze the trail ahead – by finding the most talented, passionate people, and building a community hub around purpose, cause, and dedication.
Entrepreneurship is no easy task, but our determination and tenacity only builds, the closer we get to WYLDER’s full development. We’ve endured a tremendous amount of sacrifice to get here – and we know the set of challenges will continue to evolve and change, but we’re ready, and we think the outdoor community is ready too.
