Claim The Chair(Working title)

The year is 2100 and mankind has just made first contact with an advanced alien race. Seeing the possibilities among the stars, the world rushes to join these new races in the Galaxy. But in their haste they are allowing some less than stellar candidates into the newly formed Galactic Navy. This is where you come in. It has been your ambition to command a starship since you were a child, and now the possibility can be a reality. It’s a long road to the Captain’s Chair, but there are shortcuts. 

Claim the Chair is a Windows/Linux/MAC title in development using the Unity game engine. Please be aware that images show are from the current developer build and in no way reflect what you can expect at publication.

FEATURES

Choose a career path in the Galactic Navy (Currently Medical, Engineering, Science, and Tactical). Many missions will have unique content depending on the player’s career. Careers also determine what areas of the ship are available to you, what tools you have access too, and how you are able to interact with other crewmen.

Ship events telling the story of Mankind’s spread across the galaxy. You may find your ship assigned to support planetary colonization, the construction of a space station, investigation of new resources on strange planets, making first contact, or other exciting missions.

Realistic space simulation: Systems for changing gravity, directional physics, area based oxygen, and more.  

Partially destructible terrain: Doors blow off hinges, clear terrain obstacles, many ship systems can be destroyed(often with disastrous effects), and more.

Choose how you progress: Rise through the ranks with hard work or subversion. Complete away missions and support the ship to gain promotion points and advance, or sabotage your superiors and competitors to get a leg up. Each career path will have unique opportunities to sabotage their shipmates.

Crews with unique personalities and ambitions. Find a partner with an ambition like “Become first officer” to support your schemes or have your back as you climb the ranks. But be careful! Asking a medical officer with a “good” alignment to poison your superior may get you thrown in the brig. 

Personality traits will also determine AI behavior. For example, a crewman with the Hypochondriac trait may spend a great deal of time in the medical bay.

Suspicion System: If the Chief Tactical Officer keeps getting killed by friendly fire by the same cadet, there will be an investigation. If your suspicion becomes too high you will find yourself relieved of duty for a time, confined to quarters, etc. Try lowering your suspicion level by being an upstanding citizen or putting that laser that killed the Chief Medical Officer in your coworkers bunk.

The First Mission and Gameplay

During the basic training/introductory level at the Galactic Navy Recruitment Facility you will be introduced to the New Worlds Company. The NWC represents a corporation made of business and scientific leaders from around the world who have pooled their resources to fund colonization and mining efforts on new worlds. As the game begins the NWC has just began their colonization of the first new human world and we get to see how the NWC and Galactic Navy compete for position in the control of mankind’s space ventures.

After some initial story and learning the basics of game controls, career functions, systems, etc… you will select your career and be launched into the first real mission; First Colony. 

 You will find that the NWC was not prepared for what they found while setting up their first colony on a resource rich planet. In a rush to show revenue from the venture they decided to get mining operations started before finishing the defensive grid or its orbital power system. Now, creatures from beneath the planet’s surface have overrun the colony and it’s up to the GN, and your crew specifically, to save the day. 

 At this point where you go next depends on your class. Remember that one of the key aspects of larger missions like this is to allow lower ranking characters access to crew members they may not have access to on the ship. It’s a nice opportunity to give someone the wrong injection, steal a laser, or just find crewmen to conspire with later. 

 TACTICAL 

You are assigned to the assault force tasked with clearing and securing the colony and its perimeter. You will then either defend the colony until the defensive grid is brought online or you will escort a scientist to a nearby cave to gather information. 

 ENGINEER 

You are assigned to a team sent to the orbital power station where you will assist with getting it online and sending power to the colony. You will then travel to the colony where you will finish bringing the automated defensive grid online. 

 MEDIC 

You begin in the med bay where you will be treating injured colonists and discover something odd about their injuries. You will then have to travel to the colony and apply a vaccine to colonists and crewmen bitten by the creatures. 

SCIENCE 

You will also begin in the med bay, where you will investigate the strange toxin in the colonists wounds and create a vaccine. You will then head to the colony and be escorted to their lair to take samples.

 After the mission is complete you will return to the ship where you have some time to roam the ship(limited by your rank and career), cause some chaos if you like, or perform a few tasks for your commander to progress. By either eliminating a competitor or doing a task you will get your first promotion and a class mission introducing you to the features unlocked by promotion.

Funds raised via this Kickstarter are to hire artists, licensing, legal fees, marketing, and release costs.

Risks and challenges

We have a dynamic development crew but we are missing skilled artists to bring the game to life. Our first goal after funding will be to hire a full time artist.

Regardless of what challenges we face in production our developers are dedicated to releasing this game as quickly as possible. We want to play it more than anyone.
