<< Hi. My name is Iris Porter, and I'm making a book called DIYinLAX about how community inspires creativity and why people don't quit their daydreams; it's a cultural study of Los Angeles, California. This book is the third in a series about do-it-yourselfers and their creative work in different North American cities.

Making books isn't cheap, and I know this because I've been writing and editing independently published books and zines for over 15 years. I love making books, and I love being inspired by amazing people and their great projects.
In 2003 I compiled DIYinPDX about my hometown of Portland, Oregon. I raised money by mostly putting on house shows which ended up only covering the cost of the CD production for the compilation that came with the book. A kind and generous person, however, actually took me up on the high end of the sliding scale donation for these shows of $5-$5,000, and we were able to print and bind 1,000 copies of the book.
In 2007, after spending three long winters in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I completed DIYinHFX. Through hosting Secret Cafes once a month (which is basically turning your home into an eatery for a day, which there's even a how-to in the book about doing just that) and by putting together an auction event, we only raised enough money to cover the cost of printing and collating a small edition of the book. I letterpress printed the covers myself and perfect bound each copy at my kitchen table in the evenings after working all day at the school art library.
Both of these books were a success. Multiple copies were purchased by the county libraries and local art libraries as well as being profiled in each cities local weekly newspaper.
My goal with DIYinLAX is to be able to focus my time and energy on continuing to gather quality content for the book and to worry less about the production costs...this is where you come in...it's actually pretty simple, you can basically pre-order a book...6 out of 7 of the backer rewards will ensure you a first edition copy. Please take a look at the rewards that I'm offering on the side of the screen, and if you are unable to financially back this project, helping spread the word about it would be a huge help.
I'm really excited about finishing this book and getting it out into the world to inform and inspire others and to do that I need your help. I need to raise enough money to cover the cost of printing and binding the book, paying the designer, and to cover some other expenses like getting around to complete interviews and getting those interviews into a written format.
I have already started this project, but I still need to finish some research, writing, and interviews. With DIYinLAX, I plan to go beyond the basic premise of the previous two books. In addition to including interviews, profiles, and how-to tutorials, I hope to go deeper into how community inspires creativity and what motivates people to do what they love to do within the context of consumer capitalism and the current economic situation.
Again, I love making books. I love the inherent collaborative nature of this DIY series, and I hope that you can be part of it. With your generous support, I can finish making this book about creative drive and inspiration and the undying passion of following dreams. It is my dream to make more books.
