In Flocks & Flyways, the goal is to collect the most Migration Tokens by creating (drafting) and migrating (playing) Flocks of Birds south for the winter to their warm feeding grounds. Players will need to strategically navigate crowded Flyways and catch Strong Tailwinds while avoiding dangerous Predators, Fog and other hazards (actions). The player with the most Migration Tokens when there are no tokens remaining wins the game.
You can download a PDF of the rulebook HERE for more on how the game is played. Feel free to send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions!
In Flocks & Flyways you'll be drafting bird and action cards from a common field. As you collect birds you will be able to form flocks and play them into flyways so they can earn Migration Tokens. Each turn you will also have the opportunity to play action cards to help your own flocks or hinder your opponents' flocks.
Here's a close up example of one of the 9 types of bird cards you'll find in the game.
As you play bird and action cards and earn migration points the playfield will look like this.
Here's a quick video explaining how to play Flocks & Flyways:
Some things people are squawking about Flocks & Flyways:
The Dice Tower News podcast with Paul Owen and Roger Hicks included Flocks & Flyways in their "five Kickstarter games likely to fund" feature.
A fun interview over at Paul Semel’s blog discussing the game, design decisions and why it doesn’t have sharks in it:
We were invited on a really fun podcast with the great folks over at Happy Mitten and talked board games, video game industry bits and bobs, a little about sharks and even... cheese.
A nice shout out on the great board game blog Purple Pawn: http://www.purplepawn.com/2014/08/flocks-flyways/
“Flocks & Flyways is a unique game with elegantly simple iconography, and a refreshing naturalist look. It was fun to focus on building my flocks, but even more fun for a combative player like me to “hate draft,” play predators, and get aggressive to keep competitors from foiling my migration strategies. Bonus points for being equally optimized for a two player experience.”
- Theresa Duringer, developer of the RTS video game Cannon Brawl
And now the stars of the game, our fine feathered friends: meet the Birds!

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, both of us at Shark & Shark Games, Matthew Hickman and Stephanie Palermo, come from a background in video games, with Matt in production and Stephanie in communications, so we've seen a lot of games through from their early stages to launch! As much as we love video games, our spirit is rooted in sharing things with people, which is how quickly board gaming became one of our biggest hobbies (and collections: 150 and growing!).
We desire to make fun games with high replayability, where you may just also learn something when you play. We love games that are fun for two players, but can also be shared and enjoyed with a group. Quick card games that make you want a rematch immediately after, or where at the end of the game it makes you want to play again using a new, different strategy. That's the soul of Flocks & Flyways.
We want to share more of this type of game with you all! We've been working on the game for about a year now from concept to prototype to playtests, but physically producing a run of games is very expensive. We'd love your support to make Flocks & Flyways a reality, and we think it'll be worth your while if you enjoy games that allow for strategic play that are still 30-minutes or less (and have art you enjoy!).
UNLOCKED! - Bonus Bird Card - 200 Likes on the Shark & Shark Games Facebook
What's this? A Swallow carrying a coconut? No, we're not suggesting coconuts migrate, but this little Swallow is going to have to work pretty hard to migrate with that coconut. You can add this bonus card to your game for an optional challenge worth lots of points but is very challenging to migrate successfully. To unlock this bonus, visit and Like the Shark & Shark Games Facebook page.
UNLOCKED! - Quick Reference Cards
100 Kickstarter Shares on Facebook
We'll throw in four quick reference cards to each deck of Flocks & Flyways. Also included in the reference sheet will be a handy breakdown of each Bird, how many of each are in the deck and their stats for you extra strategic Bird lovers who like to play the odds. To unlock this bonus, hit the "share" button at the top of the Kickstarter page.

Risks and challenges
We've done a lot of research, but this is still our first card game to be produced. The largest time commitment: designing the gameplay, balancing, and art is all near final. We've also done extensive gameplay testing to fine tune play. We have established lines of communication with manufacturers so that we can go with the option that makes most sense depending on our level of funding.
From our experiences shipping many video games, we're used to the pitfalls of production and we have contingency plans in place for any issues that may arise. We're very confident in our cost estimates and our delivery date.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
