What's the film about? What does “disabled” mean when a man with no legs can run faster than many Olympic sprinters? With prenatal screening able to predict hundreds of probable conditions, who should determine what kind of people get to be born? If you could augment your body’s abilities in any way imaginable, what would you do and why? From pre-implantation genetic diagnosis to neural implants and bionic limbs, researchers around the world are hard at work developing a myriad of technologies to fix or enhance the human body, but what does it mean to design “better humans” and do we want to? FIXED follows three remarkable people: Gregor Wolbring, John Hockenberry, and Patty Berne – a scientist, a journalist and a community organizer – each of whom has a personal story of disability and a passionate engagement in the debates around emerging human enhancement technologies.
What are you doing here on Kickstarter? I am raising money to finish a film that I have put more than 4 long years of my life into creating. And guess what? The film is almost done! I have shot more than 120 hours with some of the most brilliant and intriguing people I've ever met and have edited a powerful and compelling 40-minute cut. The money I am raising is needed to pay for the last post-production stages: buying archival rights, editing, color correction, sound mixing, and hiring a composer to create an original score. Now I need your help to reach my goal. Will you become a part of the film by donating today? There are rewards for you, too! (See the column along the right for details.)
Why are you doing this? Quite simply, as a person with a disability, I wanted to make a film that seriously engages with both disability and technology in new ways and provokes questions about what human enhancement technologies mean for you and me. What are they? Will they improve our world? Who will they benefit? And at what cost? I've been encouraged by all the interest that the film is receiving from around the country and Canada so far. I've been invited to hold work-in-progress screenings at several conferences already, before the film is even done! Emails have poured in from all over from professors, scientists, and regular folks who are either thrilled or troubled by this growing world of human enhancement technologies and the tangled web of ethical and social challenges they pose and who are excited to use FIXED in their work.
Please join this growing community and help finish FIXED. Every dollar counts. With your help, we can get this important film out into the world by the end of the year and begin sharing it with television, film festivals, colleges, high schools, disability organizations, bioethics and medical conferences and classrooms, and beyond!
How does Kickstarter work? It's simple:
- I set a monetary goal ($25K)
- I set a deadline (37 days – ends August 30th!)
- You pledge whatever you can to help me reach that goal. Bigger pledges get bigger rewards (like a copy of the film when it comes out on DVD or a catered dinner party with a private screening)
- If I reach (or hopefully exceed) my goal by the deadline, your credit card is charged, I get funding, and you get the cool reward you chose. Yay!
- If I don't reach my goal by the deadline, your credit card is NOT charged, and you do NOT get the cool rewards. Boo!
- It's okay to exceed my goal, but it's NOT okay to make even a penny less than my goal.
- Please write me if any of this doesn't make sense.
What Will The Money Be Used For?
▸ editing to finish FIXED
▸ archival rights
▸ color correction
▸ sound mixing
▸ an original FIXED soundtrack
Are there rewards? Yes! Check out the right side of your screen for all of the rewards you could receive. The bigger the pledge, the bigger the rewards!
Can I give my reward as a gift to someone else? YES! I am happy to send reward packages out as gifts. Once my goal is reached, I will be in touch to inquire about what address you would like your rewards delivered to and other specifics like what size t-shirt you'd like, etc.
Is my donation tax deductible? YES! Your donation is tax deductible! FIXED is a fiscally sponsored project of the International Documentary Association (IDA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (so I can OFFER the tax-deduction!). Contributions on behalf of FIXED are payable to IDA and are tax deductible less the value of any goods or services received, as permitted by law. The value of goods and services being offered is noted under each donation level.
Can I increase my pledge once it has been made?
YES! Once you donate to our Kickstarter campaign, you may decide you want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green "Back This Project" button has been replaced with a blue "Manage Your Donation" button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.
What happens if the money isn't raised in time? Unfortunately, nothing. If my goal isn't met before the deadline, no money changes hands and the film doesn't get finished.
Can we exceed the goal? YES! Pledges can continue to be made right up to the official deadline of midnight on August 30th (okay, technically it's 9am EST on the 31st, but who's going to remember that?). Money over my goal will allow me to purchase more of the archival footage I'd like to use but is cost-prohibitive at this point (i.e., 1 second of ESPN footage can be between $1000-2500!). It would also go into more time with my editor which equals a better movie, plain and simple. Any extra funding would go into making great graphics and animations to enhance the film & towards curriculum development to pair with the film for teaching in colleges and high schools. $25K is the bare bones budget for this film. We will make a great film with it, but it would certainly be a better film with more. So please, let's aim high and overshoot this mark! :)
Praise for FIXED:
"FIXED is a movie about people. Funny, complicated, smart,
emotional people, some of whom happen to be disabled. Their testimonies,
and the way they live, are at the heart of the discussion the movie
includes and promotes. It will make you think and just as important, it
will make you feel. . . The issues this provocative documentary raises
are profound and important, and touch all of us."
— Pete Shanks, author of "Human Genetic Engineering"
"I watched the rough cut of FIXED twice and really liked it. It is an authoritative exposé on the use of technology in the quest for physical perfection examining the possibilities for improving the human body. FIXED takes us through an intriguing journey of possibilities, while three knowledgeable experts thoughtfully frame various complex ethical issues. What are the limits of restoring physical differences in a society? What is being human or being normal? Is there an endpoint to the human quest for power and perfection? When have we gone too far? As the Compliance Officer for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Mass Eye and Ear in Boston I am responsible for facilitating IRB approval for clinical research. Approval criteria are based on continually evolving federal regulations and community ethical standards. The rapid progress in medicine and bioengineering that we will experience in the coming decades will create challenging ethical issues for the regulatory community, clinical investigators and society as a whole. The movie FIXED would stimulate awareness and enhance the discourse required to approach these challenges with integrity. I can envision broad use of this well-researched documentary in universities, academic medical centers, on public TV as well as popular media. I am looking forward to the completion of this valuable and informative project." — Fariba Houman, PhD, CIP
"In this wonderfully original look at bodily variations, Brashear reveals a world of disability research, advocacy, and counter-rhetoric. FIXED introduces the real experts, who eloquently dispute stereotypes – and disclose the shocking news that the able human may be an outdated standard anyway." — B. Ruby Rich, Film Critic and Professor of Social Documentation
If I donate, when will I receive the rewards listed? All rewards, big and small, will only happen if my goal is met. If I do meet my goal, immediately after deadline we will start to manufacture and ship all physical merchandise directly to you. This may take a few months. The DVD and digital downloads should be finished by the end of the year. I will be in touch via email to confirm your shipping address.
My place of employment matches donations. Are you eligible to receive matching gifts? Since FIXED is fiscally sponsored through IDA, they process and accept matching gifts from businesses when an employee has made an eligible donation. Each company has their own rules and procedures for processing these donations. Employees or businesses who would like to make eligible gifts should contact the appropriate person at their place of employment for details on how to proceed. After a matching gift has been initiated, please let us or IDA know that a matching donation will be arriving and ask your company to reference the project you are donating to somewhere on the accompanying letter.
A few notes on the rewards: The $35 FASHION UPGRADE package includes both the FIXED T-shirt and the digital download of the film, once completed.
The $125 XAVIER'S SCHOOL FOR GIFTED YOUNGSTERS SPECIAL should read: "Amount over $35 is tax deductible."
All pledges of $10 and more will receive an on-screen credit and a thank you on the film's website.
How do we contact you? Glad you asked! You can reach me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you for joining me in my campaign to finish FIXED!
