The Kremlin is the heart of the Russian political life and the center of it's culture and history. The name Kremlin means "fortress inside a city".
Mythological creatures, such as the Siren—a creature of Russian legend that has the face and chest of a woman and the wings and feathered tail of a bird.
The balalaika is a plucking string instrument that resembles a guitar, but has a triangular shape and only three strings (or two in some cases). Today the balalaika has disappeared from Russians’ everyday life almost completely. There aren’t many people left who can play it – not to mention, only professional musicians in Russian folk music ensembles.
Russian folk dance was and still is an important part of Russian culture. Costumes were beautifully designed with great detail. Typically, the clothing for the dances was based on specific events, such as holidays, and would vary between these events. The color red was incorporated in many of the costumes because it is associated with beauty in the Russian tradition.
"Garmoshka" (or garmon') is a Russian traditional folk button accordion. Garmoshka is a free-reed wind instrument with bellows and two push-button keyboards. The left keyboard is intended for accompaniment: by pressing a button one makes bass or an entire chord sound. The right keyboard is for playing the melody. Once designed its construction has never been changed.
An "Ushanka" is a traditional, yet stylish, Russian winter hat with ear flaps, which is extremely warm to handle the frigid Russian winters. It has ear flaps, which can be folded up and tied at the top of the hat, or tied at the chin.
The Sun is the most ancient and important symbol of traditional folk art. Russian village people believed the Sun was the reason of life, and of the world as a whole. The very word "sun" (solace in Russian) is derived from Sanskrit word "su" ("to create", "to give birth").
Yes, vodka is the most well-known of Russian alcohol.
Yes, most Russians prefer their traditional national vodka than other alcohol (like Mexicans like tequila and Germans love their schnapps).
Yes, a lot of Russians do like vodka BUT not everyone. Many women and some men can’t stand vodka (including myself!)
Yes, Russians drink vodka BUT not every day – just on occasion (birthday, holiday, wedding, etc.).
The main motifs of Russian Folk Art are local wild flowers and berries.
Nature has always been a common theme in Russian Folk Art. In Russia people believe that different design elements serve as symbols to protect them from evil forces, to bring wealth, health and love.
Matryoshka or Russian Nesting Doll is one of the most recognizable symbols of Russian culture. It was invented by a Russian artist more than 100 years ago. These dolls are fit inside one another and they often tell a story about the country's history, culture and customs.
Jacks, Queens and Kings are inspired by Matryoshka or Russian Nesting Doll.
