PowerUp 3.0 mass production

Hello Backers!

What an exciting (and exhausting) couple of weeks it has been! I am returning home today from a long factory visit in China, all to ensure that our production is running on course. Soon Kickstarter shipments will be flying overseas to more than 70 different countries!

Check out our Facebook page for updates from my trip to China.

Pre-production took us 3 days, and we started at 300 units per day. As with any mass production, there is a learning curve, and these first few days are integral to spotting areas where we can tweak the process to improve production efficiency. With 20 unique assembly stations – ranging from soldering of parts, to quality checking the pieces, to assessing the Bluetooth functionality with our test app – we looked for any bottle capping in the production process. One example of this that we found was in the soldering of the thin wire pieces, which requires considerable attention to detail. By adding an additional person to this station, we are able to expedite the process and minimize the time it takes to pass the module along to the next station.

After three days, we ramped up to 500 units per day, and we aim to increase this to 600, then 800, and then 1000 units per day by the end of the month. As the schedule stands today, we expect to have 10,000 units ready for shipment by June 20th. We will then continue to produce 10,000 units every two weeks, completing our final two Kickstarter orders on July 5th and July 20th. Once each container is completed, it will be shipped right off to our fulfillment center, at which point rewards will arrive at your doorstep within 10 days.

We know that everyone is eagerly anticipating the arrival of their PowerUp 3.0 kits, so we want to start shipping as soon as each of these containers is completed (i.e. 10,000 at a time). This leads us to the burning question: who receives the first batch?

For streamlining purposes, assembly must be done one package type at a time, meaning it would greatly complicate the process to assemble Barebone packages simultaneously with Perfect packages. With over 7,000 Basic-only orders, nearly 3,500 Perfect-only orders, and roughly 2,500 Barebone-only orders, we are going to start with single item rewards so that we can fulfill the most orders in the shortest amount of time. Bundled orders will ship out in July as part of the second and third containers.

I hope that this has shed some light on the challenges that come along with producing large quantities of a brand new commercial product. We want to “wow” each and every one of you with the PowerUp 3.0 – that is our priority – and to ensure you get the best possible product, I can only ask that you work with us as we scale our production speed for the sake of quality. I know it’s like sitting on your hands, and I cannot thank you enough for your ongoing patience and support!

All the best,

Shai

Any idea when in July a Basic Package + Barebone will be shipped out to me in the US? Just wanted to know when to expect a shipping notices. All the dates are very confusing.

Also, I could careless how much stuff someone purchased, but I would hope that only Kickstarter Backers received their order first, then others that where not part of project. If that's not the case what's the point for anyone backing these projects. The only one in that case that benefits is the creator and the end buyer should just wait for a massive release. Oh wait an minute, there would be no massive release without the backers.

No worries on the time, just like to see updates on the current status. Looking forward to flying soon.

When do you expect to be shipping?

    3. Creator Shai Goitein on June 16, 2014

@ Sameh Bijo, @Balazs Almos, @ Tim Wentz, or anyone else that has moved recently and needs to change shipping address, please communicate via the Kickstarter messages and we will try to make last minute adjustments before shipping out.

    4. Creator Amit Mishra on June 14, 2014

@Filip/Gerald- I beg to differ with your opinions here. Firstly, this is not a typical business, seriously! You also paid much less than if you pre ordered now since there is always a certain level of risk and uncertainty with a Kickstarter project. Secondly, even if you treat it to be like a business, orders should always be fulfilled in the order they were received since every customer, big or small, should be treated with equal importance - that will speak a lot a lot more towards their customer loyalty and moral company practices. I would rather order from a vendor that's honest and will ship to me based on when I placed my order rather than bump me to the back of the line if another party places a bigger order after me. Moreover, how many big successful corporations have you seen implement the strategy you talk about? None. It seems you are not familiar with the first rule of business - you would rather make $1 each from a 100 customers than $100 from just 1 customer, because when many the first set of customers return over and over, you will make money but if that one big customer never comes back, you're sitting in still water. Anyways, I'm not trying to start a debate or attack anyone here - just trying to help set backers expectations straight. Obviously, we have less concern with this project since there shouldn't be a huge shipping lag and Shai has been great with the communication and timeline. Cheers!

@Nigel Franklin: Backing a product on Kickstarter does not make you a shareholder.

    6. Creator Filip Loncar on June 10, 2014

      @Amit Mishra
You don't grasp the concept on how business works and how to retain your customers. Yes of course you serve the clients faster / better if they're spending more money. If you can make the same money by processing one large order instead of multiple small orders of course you ship the big order first it is as simple as that. If someone goes for the Captains kit and spends 500$ hell yeah I would process his order ASAP cause shipping one packet instead of 16 early birds takes much less handling and is therefore more profitable. At the end of the day what every company has to do is keep their most profitable customers happy because they are the ones generating revenue.

      @Shai
Thumbs up for adjusting the shipping date on poweruptoys.com Shai – everything else would have been outrageous.
      BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THREE THINGS:
      - HACKER PACKAGE: any info Shai?
      - PACKAGING: Any pictures of the packaging of the other rewards? E.g. Perfect package, Dogfight package, Captains Kit, hacker package, all we’ve seen is the standard packaging is that the same for all rewards?
      - STRETCH GOALS: It’s cool that production is ramping up, but I really would love to see a demonstration of the DOGFIGHT capability plus the MULTIPLE ENGINE feature in action and for the ANDROID fans the ANDROID APP of course.
Please provide some clarification / update on those points above Shai
      Regards,
      Filip

      @Amit Mishra
      seriously?

      Only for clarification:
If i make a preorder today on
      http://www.poweruptoys.com/collections/frontpage/products/powerup-3-0-smartphone-paper-airplane-conversion-kit
      the shipping is July 2014
      Great.
I receive my order from 2013 at the same time as the folks form Juni 2014.
      Thx a lot.

I don't understand why so many backers expect their shipment first just because they're paying more??? To be clear and honest, that makes no sense!! So when you go to a restaurant, you expect those that order more food to be served first, even though someone else may have been seated first and ordered beforehand?? Please guys, keep it real. There is not that much of a time difference between the shipments - the project has successfully met every milestone. Be happy and thank Shai for the amazing work and dedication to his backers. This is by far one of the most efficient and timely projects I have backed and I look forward to receiving the product when it is ready. I leave it to the creator to determine the most efficient way of getting it in my hands.

    9. Creator Nigel Franklin on June 7, 2014

It's great to be getting the product and we are really looking forward to that. The original intention was also to buy a piece of the company. All the news we have heard is about product, With the huge over-subscription, do all backers have some shares or only the first subscribers? Please clarify as I am sure there are many wondering about their shareholding. If we are shareholders, when will we be told what we own and can we expect profit forecasts?

    10. Creator Tim Wentz on June 7, 2014

I am in the process of moving. Any way to update my address? Thanks!

    11. Creator Balazs Almos on June 6, 2014

How can I change and check the delivery info and shipping status ? My company moved to a different location.

    12. Creator Sameh Bijo on June 6, 2014

      Hey
I haven't received the delivery info form yet ??????

    13. Creator John Becknell on June 5, 2014

One of the best run campaigns on kickstarter I've pledged on. Thanks for the updates and the skill-set to make this project a successful one.

    14. Creator Daniel Tan on June 5, 2014

Thank you Shai for the updates! :)
      I share your pain Tony...mayb we r on e same project...LOL!

    15. Creator Tony May on June 5, 2014

Thanks for posting and keeping everyone in the loop! I'm currently working with another new product, and recieving delays and poor communication and plannnig.

Your awesome communication, transparency and clear planning has given me a fantastic insight into the process. Thanks for the amazing work! :-)

    16. Creator Jackson Keddell on June 5, 2014

Shai- you mean bottle-NECKING, not bottle -CAPPING ...I hope :-)

    17. Creator Con on June 5, 2014

Great update Shai. Sounds like I will be near the back of the queue, but your reasoning is good, and the difference in time really is not very much.

    18. Creator Shai Goitein on June 5, 2014

      @Mansur, @Filip, @Justin, @brian
As explained in update #19 the current plan is the most efficient method for production and shipping, any other way would mean an additional delay of one month for the entire production and shipment process.
      Thank you for understanding!

    19. Creator David Gush on June 5, 2014

Happy to get whenever - it sounds like the wait will be well worth it! Great work guys.

    20. Creator Mansur A. Usmani on June 5, 2014

I hope what you mean by bundled orders is orders which have addons added via Backerkit. And it does not affect the Perfect Package. Also, higher pledge tiers should be given higher priority in shipping

    21. Creator Filip Loncar on June 5, 2014

I agree, people pledging the most money should receive their orders first. I for myself ordered the Hacker Package PLUS spares... so I'm last in the foodchain?! Come on Shai you're kidding.

Please can you tell us about the hacker package and when it will be in the shipping order?

      Thanks in advance
      F

    22. Creator Dan Gervais on June 5, 2014

These updates are an awesome glimpse into the process, thanks Shai!

    23. Creator JimmyJack on June 5, 2014

Amazing how people want instant gratification. Great job Shai and I cannot wait to fly my paper airplane. Even if I am a lowly small $ backer.

    24. Creator Jeremie Lariviere on June 5, 2014

Thanks for the update. I'm looking forward to getting the App and the device!

    25. Creator Trogdor on June 5, 2014

      @Shai

      Clarification please:

      >> Bundled orders will ship out in July as part of the second and third containers.

Does this mean the shipping containers will ship out in July [at least 10-21 days for the containers to reach US soil] or the actual product?

If the former what is the time frame for the product to be unloaded to the warehouse and the fullfillment center to actually send the product to backers?

Ultimately what I'm looking for is when I will hold a perfect package in my hands in the US....yes, I know it is an estimate but I suspect July is just when they ship from China to the US...not the actual date they ship to backers.

      Please clarify.

    26. Creator Justin Lane on June 5, 2014

I agree, those of us who paid more should definitely be getting our stuff first.

    27. Creator Brian Levinsen on June 5, 2014

Great thing that it is on it's way, But honestly. Those that pledged the most, those that made sure we reached those stretch goals, those that ensured we get an even more awesome product by adding more to their pledge, goes last in the queue?

    28. Creator Jason Skrzypiec on June 5, 2014

So those of us that spent the most money have to wait the longest? That makes sense.

    29. Creator Michael Klouda on June 5, 2014

Thanks Shai for the update. Appreciate hearing about the logistics. Can't wait to fly it for the first time!

    30. Creator Nolan on June 5, 2014

Woop - right after posting that, I realized I misread; ok yeah, it's clear from the update I'll need to send in that email, haha

    31. Creator Nolan on June 5, 2014

How are the chances of getting my Barebones kit before the 14th? I'll be moving that day, so if it's unlikely, I'll need to request a shipping address change (backerkit is already locked)

    32. Creator Stockholm17 on June 5, 2014

      @crane235
      seriously?

    33. Creator Thomas Radetzki on June 5, 2014

Again, where is the Android App?
What should i do getting my backers kit without the app?
      Are there any news?
I'm allso willing to be a beta tester if this app is still not ready.
      But please push this task.

    34. Creator Bahram Shamsian on June 5, 2014

I would have pay double for this toy if the factory was in US instead of China

    35. Creator crane235 on June 5, 2014

I was in China, you can send me my plane from the factory directly, it is a long time that sent it to the United States then turn a circle back to China again! I hope to get it as soon as possible!

    36. Creator Ben Shaft on June 5, 2014

I can't even begin to describe how awesome it is to be part of a kickstarter project that is actually doing what they promised, keeping us informed and completing the project within a very timely fashion. I am backing several other KS projects that are a year or more behind, don't leave any updates. When they do update, there's no real progress, just another delay and no explanation. I just want to thank Shai and the PowerUp team for doing such a great job with this project. Your professionalism, hard work, and respect for backers shows what a KS project SHOULD look like. Keep up the good work.

    37. Creator Charles Zorbini on June 5, 2014

Is it still possible to change my address? Backerkit said it was locked for processing.

    38. Creator Mark Wold on June 5, 2014

Crap - Burned once again by Kickstarter add-ons. I originally signed up for a basic package. But then as time went by, I went with the "Perfect Package". That little mouse click now puts me almost at the bottom of the shipping list. Either way, I'm sure it will be the same amount of fun whether it gets here in June or in July...

    39. Creator MF Calub on June 5, 2014

Thanks for the update Shai. Looking forward to playing with this with my son during his summer break.
